To be angry at sisters Eras tour present??

Grealish · 19/06/2024 10:51

I have two tween DDs who are Taylor obsessed atm. Was gutted when I didn’t get a code to get them tickets.

Well yesterday my sister came round, and told me she had a surprise for the girls. Three eras tour tickets for me and the girls!! The girls (and me) were so excited, youngest ran off to show her aunt what outfit she was going to wear, and oldest kept announcing that it was the best day of her life.

and then my sister said: “it’s a good thing your DH has the weekend off too, he can drive you to the airport!”. Well I felt like bingo in that one episode of bluey. Airport? I’m not going to the airport?

Turns out the tickets are in London. This Sunday. We live in Ireland. My sister bought the tickets, but now I’ll have to book flights and hotel. I have work on Monday so I’ll have to try book that off. We have a family holiday coming up as well as my best friends hen party so really do not have the money for flights and a hotel, if I can even find a hotel this late notice.

I just wish she’d come to me first before telling the girls, as now I’m either going to have to crush their dreams or somehow find a few hundred quid to get us all to London.

AIBU to be so angry at my sister (even tho I think she thought she was doing a nice thing.) and to think that a present should not put the recipient out of pocket…. Sorry I actually don’t even know what I’m expecting people to say back I’m just in need of a good rant.

Embrace the chaos. Your sister has had the opportunity to get these tickets and thought of you and her nieces. Make a list, work through it and you’ll have a fabulous time with your daughters.

Bobloblaw84 · 24/06/2024 07:13

How were you going to buy tickets at a hundred quid each if you can’t afford a few hundred quid to get to London?

Horsebox27 · 24/06/2024 07:14

i hope you had a great night.
also hope you give your sister a massive thank you for making your daughters dream come true. It’s properly kind to buy these tickets and not even decide to go with your daughters herself
I also hope your sister doesn’t read this thread (or the daily mail) as if I were in her shoes I’d seriously reconsider being so generous with you / your family in future. 😔

Always28 · 24/06/2024 07:25

Hope the concert was amazing and that you all had a great time

I doubt the OP would want many more surprises like this.

A truly kind gesture would have been tickets for Dublin presented at least a couple of weeks in advance, London venue a few days in advance- when they could have been presented two weeks earlier- not so much as involved an expensive last minute flight and accommodation.

Sweetvalleyhigh1234 · 24/06/2024 07:34

@Grealish you made it on to the mirror newspaper. Why do the papers keep doing this? It's one thing posting here but a national paper letting the whole world know... they've been doing this alot recently. No other news so stealing posts from here.

OrangeCrushes · 24/06/2024 07:38

Your sister put you in a real pickle. Well done for making the most of the situation!

CurtainsOfSparta · 24/06/2024 07:53

TooLateForRoses · 20/06/2024 17:19

People are getting really stupid over these tickets and losing all common sense. Of course she should have run it by you.

Taylor Swift fans are utterly insane. I don’t care what anyone says, they entirely bonkers. People think it’s the greatest gift ever bestowed on a human to go to her gigs, or that because they’d ’sell a kidney’ everyone else has to feel the same way. Some of the things I’ve seen written/heard that her fans have said are crazy. This thread is case in point.

Ps ferry foot passage for 3 is about £160 return Dublin to holyhead, train return (holyhead to london) for all 3 is £260ish in total so that is more financially doable than flying

From Galway (but don't know where you are obviously) it's €322 return to London by Irish ferries including the trains in Ireland and England for an adult and two kids

OP already explained this.

LazyGewl · 24/06/2024 08:46

You and your kids are so lucky - not because you got tickets to the show but because of the way you are treated by your family. We don't all have that. I know it was stressful, but in years to come all you will remember of this is what a great night you had with your children.

roses2 · 19/06/2024 12:06

OMG I have just googled the cost of tickets - how does she have so many fans when tickets start at £400???

Other than that sorry to hear the present will cost more - that is very thoughtless of your sister.

Because the only tickets available right now are resale tickets and it's scalpers that are selling them. Originally they were between £60-£100 possibly a bit higher if you wanted VIP and hospitality.

CosyLemur · 24/06/2024 09:10

It's not your sister being unthortful it's probably the opposite, given she's telling you at such short notice she's probably seen some resale tickets come available on Ticketmaster and knows how quickly they sell. So brought them, and probably paid 3 or 4 times the original price as well.

I can’t advise on flights but search for accommodation in Bracknell it’s sooooo much cheaper than London and on a train route that runs every 20 mins straight to underground hub it’ll save you loads as London prices are up because of eras tour and ascot races

So many idiots on this post.

Biddie191 · 24/06/2024 11:03

Hope you all had an amazing time. I get why you were shocked to start with, well done for getting organised. It'll be a fantastic story to tell <3

Grealish · 24/06/2024 13:06

Back home, just about to head into work so just a quick update!!!

Had a bit of a nightmare with the tickets - had to log into my sisters account just before we went in and didn’t realise they were standing tickets until just before. We went up to the lady checking tickets, she asked their ages, and I didn’t even realise there was an age restriction so just said their actual ages (tbh even if I had tried to lie, youngest is very clearly not 14). Was really panicked when they said they were too young, but thankfully after a while they managed to get us into some seats (I think they save seats for this sort of thing? People in standing who need to sit down etc).

Once we were inside everything went smoothly! Concert was fab and we all had a ball!! I’ve never been to a concert in London before though and omg getting out of Wembley was mayhem.

Bit my tongue and agreed with them all day when they said how great Aunty was but then just before bed on our blow up mattress my youngest whispered “Thanks for taking us mammy you’re the best” and every second was suddenly worth it 🥰

VIP package tickets for Wembley were £600+ and yesterday morning were re-selling on stub hub for over £5000 each.

Hecatoncheires · 24/06/2024 13:25

OP, I'm so pleased it all went well. Sounds like something your DDs will remember forever. Lovely end to the story.

Greatbritish · 24/06/2024 13:27

What a lovely update @Grealish Your daughter's comment absolutely made it worth it. Well done on sorting the standing tickets to seating.

I was sat outside Wembley yesterday and listened to some of the concert. I did hope you and your family were inside having a ball. I'm glad you did.

What a wonderful memory you've given them. Very much worth the last minute chaos and money to make that happen for them.

PumpkinSly · 24/06/2024 13:43

Glad it went well @Grealish. I don't think you were being ungrateful at all for wanting to vent. It was a fab gift badly executed. Hopefully you'll look back on the experience and think that your sister did a good thing, but maybe find a time to have a quite word with her about running things by you before telling your girls.

tootyflooty · 24/06/2024 14:11

aww really glad you went, they will remember this forever. Aunty will be the best aunty, but you took them and experienced their joy first hand.
My daughter bought our tickets, I'm not a huge Swiftie, but took her to her first gig when she was about 12, she is 26 now. She wanted me there as she said she has never been to one of her gigs without me, and "it's our thing". So I've seen her 4 times now, we dress up and fully embrace the whole experience, I never saw my favourite artists this many times, but just seeing the pure joy on her face , and watching her sing and dance to every number, just filled my heart.. She went on her own again on the Saturday night. I'm sitting here now in my Eras tour tee-shirt, feeling pretty cool. 😎

Nope, as I said it's the Common Travel Area, which is an open border area with free movement. Airlines may request a form of ID, but there is no requirement to have a passport.

Off topic however I’m just quoting this as often MN threads come up when questions are asked in Google searches.

you may not need a passport but the only airline that currently accepts forms of photo ID other than passports between ROI and UK are aer lingus (who are also usually the most expensive)

Noodlehen · 24/06/2024 14:46

@Grealish so glad you and your girls had an amazing time!
