To think my friend was really rude?

We have come for a week away in a caravan with the kids. My friend and her family booked the same week so we will spend some time with them but not all the time.

We arrived and typically its pouring down. She has just knocked on the door to ask if we want to order takeaway with them. I said oh the kids are just eating some bacon rib, potato and cabbage soup I brought with us (they love this, always request it).

She laughed her head off and asked why I've brought food like that with me. I said I've brought a big lasagne, beef stew and a chicken curry that I made as well. We will get fish and chips etc one night and maybe eat out but I thought it was just better to be prepared. She thinks I'm nuts and really made fun of me.

We've just bought a house and money is a bit tight to be honest so I did want to keep costs down and not waste money on crappy food when possible. I feel a bit embarrassed now though like I'm a tight arse!

You know “faux” isn’t a typo for “fake”, right?

I’m not saying we should all live off takeaways. I’m just more than a little dubious at the utter horror some people are expressing at the very idea on this thread. “But, but, but… you have to wait for them to arrive!!” Well who fucking knew?

Yes I do know that thank you

Moonshine5 · 20/06/2024 17:26

Not all takeaway food is unhealthy and not all home cooked food is nutritious.

twodowntwotogo · 20/06/2024 11:07

Why is dislike of takeaways fake (or 'faux')?
Just look at the massive health problems British kids have, partly from eating crap. Her kids are under 5 years old, why should she feed them processed rubbish or deep fried food? Good on her for making them nutritious food - she's to be admired.
It's irresponsible to feed kids dominoes just because they prefer it. Most kids 'prefer' sugary crap, doesn't mean a decent parent should feed them it.

I’m sorry but what? If we have a healthy diet then it’s ok to be unhealthy for a few days on holiday.

Londonrach1 · 20/06/2024 17:34

Rude.

Bellaboo01 · 20/06/2024 19:27

I am Mrs Frugal but, making bacon rib/cabbage soup to take on holiday and reheat surely isnt the norm!?

The friend poking her head round the caravan door whilst it is pouring with rain to say - 'Do you guys fancy getting a takeaway together' is a normal thing to do when you are staying in the same place and they are your friends.

She wouldnt have felt inferior at all - she probably went back to her caravan and said to her family. We're fine to order on our own. They are having cabbage soup next door (dont go in and see them tomorrow morning)!!

You… you mean she wouldn’t be jealous?! 😲

We do a food shop before we go to a caravan. We take the air fryer and cook all the dinners. We have part baked rolls at lunch. Saves money and the food is rubbish in the restaurant.

Each to their own, but how could this possibly be classed as a holiday? You might just as well be at home.

Because holidays are about more than just the food?

Italiandreams · 20/06/2024 21:22

Eating out with young children is stressful, we definitely enjoy a holiday more when we feed them food they like at the caravan , and then have more money for activities. For us it’s about uninterrupted , quality family time, away from the stresses of work. Cooking simple food with no time pressures for me is no big deal but I do understand we are all different .

Packetofcrispsplease · 21/06/2024 11:38

She’s a bit rude , laughing at you .
Fair enough if she’s surprised as some people don’t cook at all on holiday .
When we have a family holiday we are almost always self catering.
I don’t bring meals with us , but I do shop for a few ingredients to make very basic meals or we buy some of the supermarket meal deals / fresh pasta and sauce that sort of thing .
We always eat breakfast in the holiday accommodation, usually get coffee and ice creams out and about .
maybe buy one or 2 lunches out and have one takeaway meal or fish and chips

Sorry - what do you mean by your comment?

GalacticalFarce · 21/06/2024 12:15

"Each to their own, but how could this possibly be classed as a holiday? You might just as well be at home."

Seeing as they'd be doing this anyway, much better to do it in a nicer place with more activities.

We do the same as you on uk trips op. Take some food with us and have a few meals out. It's not unusual, saves money and is healthier.
Some people find it easy to put the effort in, others don't. No need for embarrassment at all.

nokidshere · 21/06/2024 12:19

She thinks I'm nuts and really made fun of me.

I think my friend is nuts for loving camping and prepping food before she goes, she thinks I'm nuts because I want a comfy bed and someone to make my breakfast and wouldn't be seen dead in a tent. We laugh and tease each other about it all the time. Isn't that normal friendship behaviour?

If she is making you uncomfortable on purpose then she's not your friend, if you are just being anxious and overthinking then just shake it off and get on with your holiday.

Friendships are supposed to make you happy.

PandaRice · 21/06/2024 12:33

I personally wouldn’t bother taking food from home with me. The whole point of a holiday for me is to eat out when away, not to stay in and eat the same meals I have at home.

I was agreeing with you 🙄

Mapleleafinengland · 22/06/2024 07:37

Eating out / takeaway is so expensive and mostly poor quality now. I’m with you!

Lesleymumof3kids · 23/06/2024 03:38

We are a family of 5 and I would cook dinner on a caravan holiday. We would do a shop at the nearest supermarket before we arrived. Breakfast stuff and dinners . We would go out and do activities through the day and eat lunch out or pack a picnic depending on the activities...sometimes if on an adventure type day a picnic was the only option if rock climbing or watersports as nowhere to buy food. Dinner was always easy pasta or 2 pot meals. More spending money for fun stuff and food the kids were going to eat which was a win win in our book! Then up to the entertainment at night to buy overpriced slushie and a fortune at the arcade ! It's normal not to eat just take out on caravan hols...take out all week would leave me feeling yucky and bloated . Ask your friend what their plans are for dinner etc and only agree to meet up for stuff you want to do ...nightly entertainment with the kids once or twice? Or a pizza dinner etc it's your holiday!

changedwwyd · 23/06/2024 04:28

OP she is the one with the problen and sounds insecure too.

Her rudeness and response sounds like she felt very inadequate. I.e. you had sensibly bought food which will be way nicer than takeaway and she tried to put you down to stop herself feeling bad.

Not nice behaviour - ignore and enjoy your hols x

HomeTheatreSystem · 23/06/2024 04:50

I also have 2 under 5 so I think people are over estimating the fun to be had eating out for every meal with them 🤣

This and yes, she was rude! Glad it's all sorted now though. That soup sounds amazing, perfect for a rainy day.

parentfodder · 23/06/2024 05:21

I wouldn't find taking food odd. But I might be surprised at soup in June!! Also never heard of that soup.

MauveOrPossiblyTaupe · 23/06/2024 06:59

That's very rude of her.

Also your food sounds delicious, please can I have some?

cat1886 · 23/06/2024 07:02

No, you are not nuts! You are a prepared mother! I’d do the same. So many people nowadays are so entitled and I list this as an example!

I thought the same😂😂😂maybe too salty?
