Would it annoy you if your neighbours alarm went off almost every day ( for no reason ) ?

My neighbour's house alarm is very sensitive and goes off all the time. Probably every day, sometimes twice a day.

It's not THAT loud.

Our other neighbour's alarm also goes off quite a lot, but not as much.

Ours doesn't go off ( or very very rarely ) because we set it with less sensitivity than theirs.

They each say they don't mind the false alarms and would rather just keep it on sensitive, but it doesn't bother them.

It's really starting to annoy us. Because the expectation is that you go look around outside and make sure all is well and then text them to tell them it's going off and coast looks clear ( even though everyone has CCTV as well ). I didn't make this rule, but it's what the others do when the alarms go off, so feels like you need to do that.

Sometimes I do just ignore it when I'm in the shower or whatever, but it's a nuisance. I just find it very strange the others always say it's not a problem and they'd rather they went off than we got burgled. However, I find that with so many false alarms, I just always assume it's a false alarm anyway.

It's just a bit tricky because we seem to be the only ones bothered.

I'd stop going round to check.

IncognitoUsername · 17/06/2024 17:25

What triggering the alarms 2x a day?

JudgeJane · 17/06/2024 17:27

Move then. I wouldn't be changing my home security on the say so of some whinger.

OK thanks for your view. Not just us then.

Definitely going to completely stop going out to check.

Sod that, I'd just text and say your bloody alarm is going off again.

Drizzlebizzle · 17/06/2024 17:45

They sound nuts. But it's daft for you to go out multiple times per day and text them. Tell them you're not doing it any longer and they don't need to do it for you.

Auntimabelsbudgie · 17/06/2024 17:48

We have a serial alarmer opposite us. They let their house alarm go off for ages when leaving or going in because they have to make such a fuss about their stupid yappy dogs that they leave in the porch.
Same with car alarm, it goes off every time a moth blinks, but they will ignore it for several minutes.
The whole street has asked them to be more considerate, but no luck!

You find it reasonable to interfere with your neighbours' enjoyment of their homes by having an alarm going off several times a days?

UltramarineViolet · 17/06/2024 17:54

Struggle to imagine how anyone would not find that annoying!

I definitely would have stopped checking for any signs of intruders a long time ago

Gosh I bet you're a lovely neighbour.

OP that sounds really annoying. If you don't text them about it will someone else? If so I'd just leave it for someone who doesn't have a problem with it to deal with.

Olika · 17/06/2024 17:55

How annoying. I would definitely stop texting/reacting to their alarm. Just ignore.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/06/2024 17:57

Yeah I bet they don’t mind while they’ve got you there checking.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/06/2024 17:57

Tell them you’re going to ring the police every time it goes off now and ser How they like them apples.

Roeland · 17/06/2024 17:59

Absolutely agree with you. Would drive me nuts

BitOutOfPractice · 17/06/2024 17:59

Ever heard the story of the boy who cried wolf @JudgeJane ? An alarm that goes off twice daily is about as effective for home security as a chocolate fire guard.

and yes op I would find it intensely annoying.

Theoldwrinkley · 17/06/2024 18:03

When I rule the world all alarms will be banned. Nobody ever does anything about them (except you....well done for taking matters seriously) and they just annoy to an intense degree. But I am a bit ND when it comes to noise.

Everythingiscalmfornow · 17/06/2024 18:06

Some years ago we lived opposite a house where the alarm went off virtually every day. It went on for hours. I was recovering from a head injury at the time and my bed room faced their house. I was supposed to be getting a lot of sleep but I couldn't because of the alarm. My head felt as though it was splitting in two and my recovery was delayed.
Eventually I phoned the Noise Nuisance section of the council Environmental Health Department. They advised me I needed to phone them every time the alarm went off and if it became clear it was a nuisance they would take action. So every day when the alarm started I phoned the Environmental health and eventually they did indeed take action and the problem stopped. Almost literally drove me mad at the time.

JohnSt1 · 17/06/2024 18:26

My neighbours had an ear-splitting alarm. It was ridiculously loud. It used to go off frequently. One day I knocked on their door and they said "Is that our alarm?" Then they said they didn't know how to turn it off.

Eventually the alarm company came out and turned it off. It never went off again.

Squishyforever · 11/07/2025 08:08

My neighbours alarm is going off for the second time, last time was a few months ago. I phoned 999 assuming if they hadn’t turned it off maybe it was genuine because I’d not heared it before and lived here 20 odd years. 999 wanted me to go round and take a look see if everything appeared ok. Now I’d pop next door but this neighbours property backs onto mine and would take me 10 minutes to go around and would involve walking up a shared (between others not me) private road the owners of which have been hostile to us walking up. So I said I’m not going to do that. I don’t specifically know which property it comes from and I don’t have phone numbers for them. It went off for well over an hour. Today is the second occurrence- seems to have been triggered by a power cut lasting about 5 seconds. It’s so fucking annoying I now hope that the property is being burgled. I’m not going to check or phone the police, it’s not doing anything for security all it’s doing is pissing off other people. I’m writing down the date, going to start a log and will not have a lot of patience before I pass it onto council as a noise nuisance complaint. Fucking hate people who have alarms, same with car alarms. I don’t have any, do you know why? I don’t have anything worth stealing. What your alarm system is saying is come and take a look at why this persons house has so much security. I could happily leave my door open when I go out and know nothing would be taken. And when the alarm goes off for ages it actually confirms the owners are out.

DongDingBell · 11/07/2025 08:31

Yes, it would annoy me immensely that frequently.
Stop going round. I be messaging "your alarm is going off again, please deal asap" everytime tho.

User28473 · 11/07/2025 08:34

Oh wow, I was mortified when I had a fault on my car and the alarm was going off every few days. I got it fixed ASAP so the neighbours didn't hate me. This would drive me absolutely insane. I would stop messaging and checking for them.

ComeAsYouAreAsAFriend · 11/07/2025 08:35

Do they not get a phone alert when it goes off? We have an app that tells us when it goes off and we can stop it and reset from our app. It rarely goes off though I would not be checking my neighbours property if an alarm went off that much

Rewis · 11/07/2025 08:36

If they wanted someone to go around when alarm goes off, they should get an alarm that goes directly to a security company.

It ia neighbourly to go around if it was once on a blue moon. But daily? Nah. Stop going around and they should sort whatever triggers it.
