To never sing "God save the king"

To be fair, I was never going to - I am a republican, and I did respect the late queen, so used to sing "God save the Queen". She came from a long gone era, and she fought in the war.

I have always thought the monarchy should end with her, I have always thought it was a horrible system, grossly unfair to those caught up in it, and very very annoying - I do understand the point about the prime minister using the monarchs authority though, and understand it would be hard to dismantle - not least because it would mean whatever prime minister of the day volunteering to have all that automatic power taken out of his/her hands.

But the events of the last two days have changed my mind, it is beyond annoying, it is an insidious evil

The media outright calling cancer victims "lesser mortals" - the description of someone putting on pretty clothes and waving as "the bravest woman in Britain" and the huge distress caused to thousands of normal people through this.

We shouldn't have a monarchy. We shouldn't have this system where someone is seen as a better, braver, more important person because they are part of the monarchy, and other people being publicly and firmly denigrated, because whatever their situation, however they are feeling, whatever their abilities and whatever their achievements, they are not good enough,

why? no reason, other than not being royal

Kate and Charles, if you read this, I have nothing but good wishes for you. Apart from obviously you are in the best possible position to access treatment and survive cancer, I feel sorry for you - I wouldn't want your lives.

But I have really for the first time taken on board how inherently damaging this system of having a royal family really is

Don't know why you'd respect that self serving daft old racist but not the current incarnation.
I'd struggle to see much difference between them (at least charles hasn't shown any racist inclinations that I'm aware of, but am not massively up on him so could be forgetting something obvious)

Flanjango · 17/06/2024 14:37

I wouldn't sing it as I too am a republican. I also wouldn't sing the Lord's Prayer for similar reasons. No bowing to the rich or invisible for me. 😁

FamouslyFrothy · 17/06/2024 14:38

The media outright calling cancer victims "lesser mortals" - the description of someone putting on pretty clothes and waving as "the bravest woman in Britain" and the huge distress caused to thousands of normal people through this.

So does the fault / complaint around this terminology lie with the monarchy, or the media?

ForFirmBiscuit · 17/06/2024 14:39

What? She didn’t fight in the war, lol

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 17/06/2024 14:40

I'd only sing it if I had to as I have a lot of respct now for Charles and even his wife. If you asked me a couple of years ago about this pair - it would have been a big NO!!!

I didn't say the fault was in the PEOPLE in the monarchy, I said that the idea of the monarchy being better somehow than normal people is obviously more deeply ingrained than I realised, as evidenced by all the "lesser mortals" and " bravest woman" comments, and that this nasty insidious idea is deeply damaging, and the way to get rid of it is to get rid of the monarchy

I hear they spend hours on here.

I'm sure His Majesty will be devastated.

I don' t disrespect them as people, but I hate this "hierarchy of worthiness" that they represent. They are not in any way more worthy than me, my mum, my NDN, or anyone else.

Yes. The whole (utterly ridiculous) point of a monarchy is it'd a bloodline. You just get whoever's next in line unless we return to the days of royals dying in battle and the victor plucking the crown out of a bush or whatever.

If you're a monarchist that's what you're ok with -- getting whoever is next, whether they're a dutiful robot, a Nazi stooge who is fortunately led by his dick to abdicate, a man wanted for questioning for having sex with trafficked under-age girls etc etc.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/06/2024 14:43

I never sang either. I don't bow to anyone.

ASighMadeOfStone · 17/06/2024 14:43

A thread (identical to a much longer one already ongoing) from a MNer saying she won't sing a song about the King (that she would never have sung anyway) because someone completely unrelated has called his daughter in law brave has to be peak Wtf.

Is it Schroedinger's anthem?

BellyPork · 17/06/2024 14:41

I think he has had a horrible life - how would you like to have to wait until past retirement age to start a job you never chose, but were told you had to do - He might wish it had all ended decades ago.

I feel very sorry for him

Yes, that seems like something of an overstatement for doing a bit of photographed engine-tweaking for the ATS.

Butchyrestingface · 17/06/2024 14:45

I wouldn't sing God save the king, queen or any other member of the family. But I am Scottish, of Irish descendancy, and it would not go down well in the circles I move in.

DragonGypsyDoris · 17/06/2024 14:43

You lost me at "she fought in the war".

Why? But it is irrelevant anyway - I can understand why QE2 was crowned, it a long age era in a very different society.

I can't understand why the monarchy has continued after her

Well, she gave a Nazi salute in her garden once, surely that counts?

wow, so many people who would refuse to sing "God save the king". I am surprised! and also pleased.

Oh christ, another royals bashing thread
Put it in the RF area so we don't have to read your inane and ignorant opinions

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 17/06/2024 14:48

I have never met any republican who can explain to me how anyone's life will be made one bit better by changing the way we select our head of state.

Sing it. Don't sing it. Whatever.

ChedderGorgeous · 17/06/2024 14:48

I will always respect the Queen for how she fought in the battle of Helm's Deep.

Honestly, who cares? You’re unreasonable to get so offended by nonsense press and the fact that you live in a country with history. I’m not a royalist, but I find many in the anti brigade just as weird as the die hard royalists.

well, cancer patients won't be told in the national media that they are "lesser mortals" and not brave enough - that illustrates a seriously nasty attitude that we would all be better off without
