To never sing "God save the king"

boombang · 17/06/2024 14:32

To be fair, I was never going to - I am a republican, and I did respect the late queen, so used to sing "God save the Queen". She came from a long gone era, and she fought in the war.

I have always thought the monarchy should end with her, I have always thought it was a horrible system, grossly unfair to those caught up in it, and very very annoying - I do understand the point about the prime minister using the monarchs authority though, and understand it would be hard to dismantle - not least because it would mean whatever prime minister of the day volunteering to have all that automatic power taken out of his/her hands.

But the events of the last two days have changed my mind, it is beyond annoying, it is an insidious evil

The media outright calling cancer victims "lesser mortals" - the description of someone putting on pretty clothes and waving as "the bravest woman in Britain" and the huge distress caused to thousands of normal people through this.

We shouldn't have a monarchy. We shouldn't have this system where someone is seen as a better, braver, more important person because they are part of the monarchy, and other people being publicly and firmly denigrated, because whatever their situation, however they are feeling, whatever their abilities and whatever their achievements, they are not good enough,

why? no reason, other than not being royal

Kate and Charles, if you read this, I have nothing but good wishes for you. Apart from obviously you are in the best possible position to access treatment and survive cancer, I feel sorry for you - I wouldn't want your lives.

But I have really for the first time taken on board how inherently damaging this system of having a royal family really is

I will always respect the Queen for how she fought in the battle of Helm's Deep.

Brilliant!

Boombang is better than all other mn posters

So let's all jump on boombang because of what somebody else wrote about them

MrsMitford3 · 17/06/2024 14:54

I feel like POW is getting a ridiculous amount of backlash about an article someone else wrote about her.
She had absolutely nothing to do with it.

However you feel about the RF the article is not her fault and it is a horrible piece of "journalism" with deeply insensitive choice of words but surely the journalist deserves the vitriol not POW.

I have never met any republican who can explain to me how anyone's life will be made one bit better by changing the way we select our head of state.

Sing it. Don't sing it. Whatever.

And I’ve never met a royalist who can give a sensible reason why we are better off keeping a royal family 🤷‍♀️

Prisoner of war, Prince of Wales, Party of Women, Princess of Wales.

POW for me means the first one. I wish we could keep it for that.

wow, so many people who would refuse to sing "God save the king". I am surprised! and also pleased.

'Soooo surprised, and soooo pleased.' I think you need to get out more. 🙄

You are also wrong. The poll results suggest the majority of voters (thus far) think You Are Being Unreasonable. I guess it's understandable that someone who thought Queen Elizabeth II fought in the war may get a bit confused! 😆

Also, I don't think anybody cares if you don't wanna sing to Charlie-Boy. Least of all him

Naunet · 17/06/2024 14:56

boombang · 17/06/2024 14:50

well, cancer patients won't be told in the national media that they are "lesser mortals" and not brave enough - that illustrates a seriously nasty attitude that we would all be better off without

Oh please, the gutter press could have used the exact same headline in relation to a celebrity, so you might want to get shot of them too.

wibblywobblywoo · 17/06/2024 14:56

AsYouWantToBe · 17/06/2024 14:43

Yes. The whole (utterly ridiculous) point of a monarchy is it'd a bloodline. You just get whoever's next in line unless we return to the days of royals dying in battle and the victor plucking the crown out of a bush or whatever.

If you're a monarchist that's what you're ok with -- getting whoever is next, whether they're a dutiful robot, a Nazi stooge who is fortunately led by his dick to abdicate, a man wanted for questioning for having sex with trafficked under-age girls etc etc.

Andrew, obviously, for that last line but who did he have sex with who was under age, I have missed that, not Virginia Giuffre I know because she was 17 so who have I missed reading about? 👀

OrwellianTimes · 17/06/2024 14:57

I think your anger is at the media, not the actual monarch or Kate, neither of whom asked to have cancer whilst in the public eye.

Hang on, did she kill the Chief Ringwraith, or was that someone else? Grin

Exactly! It's just about bashing the Royals. Some people must have nothing better to do. So tedious. Thread after thread after thread bashing the Royals.

Do these posters actually think they are so clever, and so original, and sooooo quirky and yooooneeek! Been done before mate. Hmm

BOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRING! 😆

Ooooh now don't go quoting solid, concrete facts and figures, and the fact that the Royals bring in way more than they cost. The haters don't like that. 😆

Leidenschaft24 · 17/06/2024 15:01

Being as I don't believe in the monarchy or the actual existence of gods.....

VG was a minor at 17, as defined by the NY Child Victims Act.

Been debunked. You think people come because of the family not the history? That’ll be why Versailles famously never has any tourist visitors I guess.

Please don't make me pull out all the stats about royal sites such as Versailles in France which suggest one does not in fact need a living RF in order to benefit from royal-related tourism and its revenues.

Yes, Versailles is a echoing wasteland, and France is full of civil servants lamenting the beheading of Marie Antoinette.

Debunked where? Also, I said nothing about what I believe, so don’t go assigning me a ‘side’ please.

Penfeatherington · 17/06/2024 15:06

If you supported the queen then you're a hypocrite.

She was just as much of the monarchy as the rest of those leeches. She wasn't special, or better than anyone else. She was just very lucky to be born into a position of extreme privilege and she took full advantage of that her whole life. She protected Andrew and prevented him from facing the consequences of sexually abusing at least one underage girl.

It was time to abolish the monarchy decades ago.

gleefulstar · 17/06/2024 15:08

Just out of curiosity OP, why do you think anyone cares whether or not you choose to sing the national anthem?

I'm very proud to have a royal family and love seeing all the pomp and ceremony.

Does that make you right and me wrong? Or vice versa? Or are we just two people with different opinions?

Genuinely can't see why you're getting so wound up about it?

FatmanandKnobbin · 17/06/2024 15:08

I wouldn't sing God Save The King either.

I don't believe in God and don't believe there should be a King so it would make as such sense as singing Pink Fluffy Unicorns Dancing On Rainbows to me.

No, by research. It’s here on the Republic website which I’m sure will make you discount immediately and continue to believe pro royal sources.
What about Versailles? Any idea why they see so many visitors? No royal family there…

I'm in my late 40s and can't think of any occasions where I've sung the national anthem! It's not obligatory.
