to expect some old timers of MN to be twirling & scuttling around still

Haven't been here for probably 15+ years. Went absent, never dipped back in . But today something made me think of the MN support, the laughs, life's highs & lows shared when insomnia kicked after my little DDs were tucked up in bed.

DDs are grown and flown the nest. On reflection it was time well spent. Even the cliquey and other shitty bits. Hope you all keep twirling and scuttling around. If you're new keep with it, it will all pan out.

Been here 15+ years. It really isn't the same place, sadly.
I won't leave permanently, but it just isn't that much fun anymore.

Ragwort · 15/06/2024 22:06

I've been here over 23 years ... it is different but I still spend far too much time here ... it's mostly interesting and thought provoking and I just ignore any threads which become tedious ... I used to take it a lot more seriously and engage in long running discussions and be desperate to 'get my point of view heard' but I no longer do that.
But it's not nearly as witty and amusing as it used to be.

Anyone else remember the Christmas gift exchanges and when we were all asked to send in a donation to keep Mumsnet going?

LemonLime374 · 15/06/2024 22:07

The mouldies thing was the beginning of the new vibe on MN I think.Plus a couple of threads that appeared in the press and attracted large numbers of new posters.

Sometimes I Google something random and find an MN thread and think oh, those posters are back! Then I realise it's from 2008.

Genuine question as someone who has young children so wasn’t around “back in the day” - how on earth did posters “rule the roost” or there been an “in crowd” on a forum? Genuinely trying to imagine how that would have worked?!

Fewer posters and no one name changed. So there was a cool girl gang who fawned over each other and their fan base fawned over them.

Then some of them flounced and started an invite only forum called moldies which was a flop.

It was much funnier back then. Addictive. And JustineMumsnet wasn't a multi millionaire and she and other staff used to chat to us in a folksy manner rather than tell us off like they do now.

It was very MC, Londoncentric and there was a lot sycophantic sucking up to the key names (some already resurrected here 🙄). Posters desperate to win approval from the Head Girls. Lots of in-group phrases and in jokes. And contrary to what it says here, it was vicious back in the day. But just done in a very withering, cold, WASP way. People are nostalgic for something that wasn’t inclusive and was a bit wanky tbh.

alrightluv · 15/06/2024 22:08

Been around 20 years. I even went all the way to a London meet up once from up north. Name changed lots. I didn't in the early years.
It's definitely not the same. But I've stayed around. There's some good amongst the crap.

redbluegreenyellowbrown · 15/06/2024 22:08

Been here for 20+ years

I now name change regularly, but i think i was the first ever poster in AIBU!!!!

(because someone liked or commented on or thanked me, or something for the post quite recently, and i had a notififcation about it!!!)

I was def here before AIBU was!

I had about an 5ish year period where i was rarely on here though..

I’m not particularly nostalgic about it as nobody ever bothered to respond to my posts, but it was funnier in those days.

Oh yes LeQueen was hilarious, always managed to get a little brag in and everyone just loved her!

Everyone didn't love her - just her fangirls.

Didn't she get banned for being a troll?

Funkyfizz · 15/06/2024 22:16

You could have a drink and a laugh on a Friday night without some sanctimonious twat berating you for having a drink problem.

Biscuithoover · 15/06/2024 22:17

sorry have I got this right, a group of people who frequently posted on mumsnet announced they were going to leave mumsnet to start their own invitation only forum and called it mouldy of all things? 😂

BIWI · 15/06/2024 22:17

They didn't call themselves Moldies! That was the name those 'left behind' gave them!

Funkyfizz · 15/06/2024 22:18

Moldies. Christened mouldies by the ones not invited.

I too have been here forever, left after the security shenanigans, then came back with a name change (kreecher, I remember you!)

If you asked me on the spot without looking, I don't think I could name one current MNr , but I can reel off names of old. So yes, it's much bigger now.

(In the olden days, there were loads of free trials and product tests. I got lots of good stuff and had some amazing experiences courtesy of MN. Good times.)

Yes the free trials were brilliant and even a focus group once with other mumsnetters and a car trial

Cabbageandcoconut · 15/06/2024 22:24

I have been here 20 years ish? , I came from babycentre. Lots of name changes , so many.
The problems are the same but the solutions are different. For some years it felt like most things could be solved with cloth nappies or a wanky basket. The cloth nappy threads used to be insane , there were millions of types and people were genuinely obsessed with them.
It evolved to spa days, a spa day was the answer to most things for a long time. That still pops up.

BeaFuddled · 15/06/2024 22:24

Spot on.

But MN could be very, very funny back then. Not any more.

Why am I still here?!

A wanky basket? The mind boggles!

BIWI · 15/06/2024 22:27

One of the funniest threads is one that doesn't exist any more - it must have been in Chat. MNHQ have searched for it as well, but they can't find it. It was about sending horses to the Olympics (which would have been the Beijing Olympics). I can't even remember why it was so funny now, but it really was, genuinely, tears of mirth and laughing out loud.

Ragwort · 15/06/2024 22:27

Yes Justine (& Carrie before she left Mumsnet - paid off??) used to regularly post but never seen these days ...

Davros · 15/06/2024 22:30

I've been here 21 years, no name change ever. MN still makes me guffaw frequently

Cabbageandcoconut · 15/06/2024 22:30

@protestanttraybake technically called a wnaky basket. Heuristic play. Often referred to as wanky baskets

BiscuityBoyle · 15/06/2024 22:31

I’ve been here about 15 years. I prefer it now, less cliques.

Funkyfizz · 15/06/2024 22:35

I wonder where Hully went. I liked her calling benefit bashers 'frothing beserkers'.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 15/06/2024 22:36

I've been here for about 16 years but have had multiple name changes. I also agree its not as fun anymore but, as someone else pointed out, it's so much bigger now and people don't present as themselves like they used to. It's more bitches behind a screen ready to pile on anyone no mattet how much an OP is clearly asking for help these days unfortunately

Elephantino · 15/06/2024 22:39

I've been here for a while too. I remember staying at a hotel in Blackpool that was run by a mumsnetter (probably 2008/09) She offered a discount for mumsnetters. I can't remember her username. I often think about her and her family, they had come to Blackpool from the south.

I still dip in and out from time to time.
