to expect some old timers of MN to be twirling & scuttling around still

Haven't been here for probably 15+ years. Went absent, never dipped back in . But today something made me think of the MN support, the laughs, life's highs & lows shared when insomnia kicked after my little DDs were tucked up in bed.

DDs are grown and flown the nest. On reflection it was time well spent. Even the cliquey and other shitty bits. Hope you all keep twirling and scuttling around. If you're new keep with it, it will all pan out.

Genuine question for no reason other than interest as I wasn’t around - did there used to be an obviously posh / private school contingent?

I wouldn’t say private school level of posh. But there was a definite middle class vibe with undertones of lentil weaving. I’m sure some members had their kids at private schools but it wasn’t obvious or a feature of threads.

I joined in about 2012 and it was VERY clicquey (and I am pretty confident and relaxed about that sort of thing).

Endless back slapping and in jokes from the same four or five people which would run over pages and pages and was incomprehensible to a newbie.

It wasn’t nasty just a bit tedious; you were always trying to decipher someone else’s jokes. A bit like being on the sidelines of a group of A girls at school. I actually prefer it today.

A very good description of 'back in the day' @Thepeopleversuswork

I joined at same time and it absolutely was like being on the sidelines, not quite fitting in, not being 'in on the joke'.

You don't see the 'thread derailing' as much. Or the 'thread killer', that seemed to be very prevalent.

The name dropping is less.

And the 'I'm bonafide - naice ham, cancel the cheque..' posts are less

Much prefer it now

MissAmbrosia · 21/06/2024 21:21

Thread derailing was very common. Actually in some cases it was probably a troll who had their efforts completely and much deservedly spoiled by discussions of cake or Peter Andre. Other times, they did gang up on posters they didn't like. It's something you don't really see any more. It's more likely nowadays that the thread gets deleted - which is something that was really rare back in the day and was worthy of note and several TAAT.

Funkyfizz · 21/06/2024 21:31

Most of the thread derailing was done on troll threads.

Go read the missing lad thread and tell me you prefer it now.
