Do you believe in reincarnation?

Ever since I was a child, I remember getting a strong feeling whenever we drove past a corn field with images of a man with long blonde hair chasing me and me feeling panicked,

I've always put this down to past life (may sound silly) and that we are constantly reborn,
The only thing that puts me off this theory is whether we only come back as humans or other animals too,

Conservation of energy/matter sort of implies that 'stuff' is neither created nor destroyed.... so if you think of it that way, we're all reincarnated into something! When we die (say, cremated), our carbon enters the air, is taken up by plants and we eat the plants... so we are, in effect, someone else already.

And actually we now know that plants, trees etc do have a form of consciousness.

Some scientists have theorised that consciousness exists outside of the mind and that everything has access to this consciousness, but at different levels - so a mouse or fish has their own understanding of the world, whereas we have a bigger awareness and access to more of it. Even plants have a basic access to this consciousness as they do interact with their environment and with other plants and mycelium etc.
Some living things may even have the same access that we do, such as whales, elephants, some birds and octopi, all of which have higher intelligence than most other animals. Of course, we have language and writing so we can share ideas that come about due to this consciousness, whereas animals don't, or they have limited language abilities.
Things like mathematics and music were discovered not invented, by humans.

When we die, that part of us which can access this consciousness - some call it a soul - goes back into the collective consciousness that, in turn, can be accessed by other living things.

Consciousness beyond death, with Dr. Pim van Lommel

Cardiologist Dr. Pim van Lommel became internationally known after his ground-breaking study on NDEs (Near Death Experiences) was published in the respected ...

No. I believe that we just die and cease to exist.

ManilowBarry · 15/06/2024 17:24

Yes. I'm pretty sure my Geography teacher in the 1970s used to be Genghis Khan.

lawnseed · 15/06/2024 17:29

Death isn't a sudden event, even in the case of cardiac arrest. It's a process. The brain neurons are still showing electrical activity several hours after circulatory death. Brain activity is at its most intense when the heart and breathing ceases. It lights up like a Christmas tree apparently, which probably explains NDEs.

Surely conceived at the moment of death?

Well that's even worse then because...no. I really don't want to go there... 😱

PeterGabrielsunderpants · 15/06/2024 17:39

At the risk of being shot down by naysayers: yes, 100 percent I believe in it. There are many reasons why I am convinced. For me, it is the only belief system that explains the reason for suffering. It is the only belief that addresses why people are born so unequal. I follow Hindu teachings and I love Tibetan Buddhism. I respect the Dalai Lama and I know he has taken many births in order to help humanity. Also, not least, my two kids, who were always articulate, used to talk about their previous lives. My son used to say that when he was a man he used to have a dog. My daughter remembered a traumatic event when two Siamese kittens she had were run over and killed. She remembered their names, which I found out were Vietnamese.

SapphireEyes88 · 15/06/2024 16:35

I believe in the evolution of the soul. A soul must experience all sorts of things in order to achieve enlightenment and move to paradise (like Buddhism). Maybe it's just comforting, I've had so much abuse and trauma I've often thought I decided to get all the crap done in one life 😂 though I've had experiences that make me think I've been here before.
I do believe some people are old souls, mature and wise beyond years and experience. Some people are also clearly young souls. When you meet someone and just click, you probably met them before!
There is also much belief in spiritual communities that some disabilities such as Downs Syndrome are very evolved souls, seeing the world in a way we could never understand.
No, we'll never know what's on the other side until we're there, but that's why it's belief, it's faith, not fact.

When dd was born, before I saw her, the midwife said, oh she’s an old soul. Then when ds1 was born a different midwife said oh he’s been here before. I have always wondered if any body else has had this happen to them with newborn babies.
@SapphireEyes88 I wish you all the peace you deserve now Flowers

I just can't fathom the concept of "nothingness", like eternal darkness doesn't even describe what "nothing" would be

I imagine being under general anaesthetic as "nothingness"., but there was no sense of darkness or anything else. With sleep you're aware of time passing, dreaming etc but when I had a GA I was out for 2hrs and it was a complete blank.

MartyFunkhouser · 15/06/2024 17:55

When he was about 4, we went somewhere far from home and my son said ‘mummy, I came here when I was a boy before’ 😱

But no, I don’t believe in reincarnation.

How could he be? He was three months old when her father died.

I agree that that’s what explains NDEs.

I really, really hope there isn't reincarnation. Once was bad enough. The thought of going through this shit a second time fills me with horror. The Buddhists thought reincarnation was synonymous with hell. In fact, so far as I understand it, reincarnation is hell in Buddhism and Hinduism.

I'm not aware of time passing while I'm asleep - only on waking.

And dreams only last seconds, so 99%+ of your sleeping state is total Nothingness

ashitghost · 15/06/2024 18:17

I hope there is no such thing. I don’t want to come back to a miserable life or one of abject poverty. Loads of scenarios really. No thank you.

FindingMeno · 15/06/2024 18:20

I absolutely believe in the soul, but don't know what the mystery is that awaits on death.

TheMiceOnTheMouseOrgan · 15/06/2024 18:22

My daughter, when she was 2, used to talk about her other mummy and daddy and how she came to us as they died. She mentioned her other family and her other brothers and sisters. She stopped talking about them when she was about 5 or 6. It was very odd and she would always point to a house in the village where she used to live. Never fanciful and always consistent. Made me wonder tbh.

MasterBeth · 15/06/2024 18:22

Ha ha. It's bullshit and anyone who believes in it is an idiot.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 15/06/2024 19:08

I'm on the fence in terms of reincarnation but my DD used to talk to dead people when she was very little.

Two particular instances that will always stick out to me are the time she asked my sister and me why there were so many sad people in front of our car. We were parked in front of a florist that had been a funeral home for many, many years (before she was even born) and there was no one there.

The second one was the "chocolate lady who owned our things before us". My mum's dear friend and neighbour died whilst I was pregnant with DD as a young single mum. She willed the contents of her house to me so when the baby came, I'd have everything I needed to set up home. Literally everything she owned materially - 25 years later and I still use her ironing board (they don't make them like that anymore) though pretty much everything else has been replaced. When she was alive, she always kept chocolate bars in a tin just inside her front door and handed them out to all the local kids. I'm certain we never talked about where our furniture etc came from in enough depth for toddler DD to have made those connections but who knows.

Thankfully now DDs a adult and no longer talks to dead people!

No, there's more to it than that. Souls go to whichever realm they deserve to go to according to their actions. There are pleasant realms, blissful realms, states which are akin to deep dreamless sleep or to nightmares.

Beautiful3 · 15/06/2024 19:33

Yes I do believe in reincarnation. There has been numerous studies on past life regression through hypnotherapy.
