Do you believe in reincarnation?

Ever since I was a child, I remember getting a strong feeling whenever we drove past a corn field with images of a man with long blonde hair chasing me and me feeling panicked,

I've always put this down to past life (may sound silly) and that we are constantly reborn,
The only thing that puts me off this theory is whether we only come back as humans or other animals too,

No, it makes no sense at all. You're probably remembering an image, a story, or even a dream you had as a child.

Yes, exactly. I was absolutely terrified of an innocuous field beside my grandmother’s house, and only in adulthood did I discover it was (probably) because I was attacked by a swarm of bees there as a toddler, something I have no conscious memory of.

KrisAkabusi · 15/06/2024 12:29

No. Like literally everything to do with what happens after death except nothing, it's nonsense. Made up because of a natural fear of dying. It's a nice thought, but no more legitimate than heaven or valhalla.

EatCrow · 15/06/2024 12:18

That’s what you experienced before you were born and you knew nothing about it.

Exactly. Presumably you don't believe you existed before you were born, so why is that any different from not existing after you die? Of course imagining experiencing nothingness is hard, because you can only experience things while you exist. You won't be floating there in a sea of nothingness, you simply won't exist any more. I've always found the idea of simply ceasing to exist a much more calming and comforting thought than the idea of any kind of unknown afterlife!

somewhereovertherain · 15/06/2024 12:32

Nope. Born - die

but also believe all religion is bollocks and the world would be a much better place without any magic beings.

Nobodyknowsitall5 · 15/06/2024 12:33

What is the point in it all?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/06/2024 12:35

What I do find intriguing is when very small children recount past memories of people or the way things were, that one can't explain how they could come up with such accounts.

I shall go and read up about this now. Here's a starter...

I find it comforting too, I’m too knackered to be avoiding white lights and explaining my sins away.

There is no-one to be reincarnated. However what about consciousness or that which observes the body mind?

brendafromacrosstheroad · 15/06/2024 12:40

I don't know about reincarnation but I do like to believe that we meet our family again when we die. It gives me that sense of hope that there's nothing after death

Would you say that consciousness was energy?

Angrymum22 · 15/06/2024 12:42

My head says no, but my heart is convinced that DS is my DF reincarnated. Ds was 3 mnths old when DF died, but both my sisters frequently comment how much like DF he is. Not really physically but his character is uncannily like DF.
DF had a degenerative disease and was none verbal by the time DS was born. I think the similarities support the idea that personality is genetic.

My DF “tum-re-tummed” his way through life. He was “gifted”, but humble and would hide his immense intelligence, occasionally surprising people with his immense knowledge. DS is very much the same, breezed through school, never had to revise, works just hard enough to achieve the grades he needs. But like my DF will totally surprise people with his knowledge. He is great to have in a quiz team.

I love that I have this little bit of my DS left.

Let's face it, nobody knows for certain! I hate it when people rubbish others for their beliefs.

We can't be sure there's an afterlife but neither can we be sure that when you're gone you're gone.

There is a lot of evidence that life ceases. None at all that any part of it continues (anecdotal evidence where people remember things they shouldnt is a genuinely interesting phenomenon but not proof)

Auntimabelsbudgie · 15/06/2024 12:49

Arlanymor · 15/06/2024 12:11

Depends on what you mean by reincarnation. Physical rebirth? Unlikely. Energy recycling - yes, happens all the time.

Please do explain

Interesting but this points to the personality also being reincarnated along with the soul. I tend to believe in reincarnation rather than reject it but the personality is as temporary as the body.

But many aspects of personality are inherited. That's completely different to reincarnation. It would obviously be completely impossible for your dad to be reincarnated as your son who was already born before he even died - but yes of course it's not surprising that he has inherited some of his traits.

For me OP one life is enough. Do you think other animals are reincarnated? Reincarnated flies? or leeches? Why would anyone think humans should or would be the only animal that is reincarnated? Probably because they are the most self absorbed and entitled IMO!

yumyumyumy · 15/06/2024 12:55

Nope. When you're dead you cease to exist. The rest is just made up out of fear as it's a scary concept to think there's nothing after this. Plus children make up all sorts of stories! I wouldn't believe that for a second. I wouldn't want to live another life as someone else anyway.

HelpMeGetThrough · 15/06/2024 12:55

Jolly1112 · 15/06/2024 12:14

I just can't fathom the concept of "nothingness", like eternal darkness doesn't even describe what "nothing" would be

Wouldn't it be the same as when you go to sleep each night?

From the point I go to sleep, to when I wake up, I remember nothing.

Guess it's the same when you're dead.

yumyumyumy · 15/06/2024 12:57

I can imagine death is like going under a general anaesthetic. Complete nothingness and you will never be aware to know/care anyway.

Mysticguru · 15/06/2024 12:58

EatCrow · 15/06/2024 12:41

Would you say that consciousness was energy?

No. It cannot be described and is Nothingness.

yumyumyumy · 15/06/2024 12:59

Consciousness is tied to brain activity. When that ceases you also cease. There's not some extra "soul" that makes you a person. Your body is you.

If anyone is open to it look up dolores cannon. If not don't bother. I believe and absolutely everything makes sense now after reading her books.

Is that confirmation bias do you think? Or did you not think of it before reading her books?

BreakingCycles91 · 15/06/2024 13:05

I think we are constantly reborn. As far as I'm aware, we cant create energy or destroy it, only transfer it

Plus I believe we can carry genetic memories and I'm sure there has been studies on this ( I could be wrong )

Sure there was a monkey one and not to climb a ladder and sure they did another one with mice or rats,

I hate the idea that death has to be so painful. That makes no sense to me.
