Love this very optimistic headline. 18 C - 19 C is fine - but it's not basking sunshine

Brits head to the beaches to enjoy the sunshine as the country basks in 19C heat but rain is expected to sweep across the nation tonight.

After a chilly start in the morning, the south west of England has enjoyed balmy weather with people making the most of the weather by heading outside.

Large crowds of sun-worshippers have been spotted on Lyme Regis beach in Dorset, where temperatures could go as high 18C. The highest temperature of the day is expected to be on the Isle of Wight where the mercury could rise to a warm but pleasant 19C.

They've got to keep the fear of "global warming" going. They can twist anything with the right words, I remember when the buzzwords of terror were "the greenhouse effect". They hadn't really got onto flying being such a sin then, as it was before the era of cheap flights, it was all about cars. Remember more recently the dark red weather maps, compared to the green ones with similar temperatures from years before? And how everyone moaned, instead of going out there and enjoying it! For once, we had heat on our doorstep, and so many people cried their eyes out.

There's still hope for July and August to be warm; and if so, the children taking exams will have had a better deal. Last year, the best of the heat was while they were stuck in school, and they had little or no summer after that.

Maybe this is the result of all those MNetters moaning over the years "I hate the sun". They've got what they wanted.😛

There are two possible upsides- maybe for those who get hay fever it is less bad than usual for June, and some of the sight for sore eyes that is British people bad dress sense in warmer weather won't be seen.

I'm in the SE and it's been t shirt weather here.
Although tbf people here are in total denial of the weather and wearing vests and shorts no matter how cold!

I kind of admire the British attitude of ‘it’s June, the sun is out so I am wearing my t shirt, shorts and flip flops’ even though it is barely 10 degrees. I do feel sorry for the little kids who get dressed up in summer clothes when it’s like this though.

I’m back to 2 fleeces and thermal leggings. 🥶

Whatafustercluck · 10/06/2024 07:45

Cloudy and windy here (east Anglia) yesterday, pissing it down all night, still rainy and cold. Forecast to be unsettled all week. This is the shittest Spring/ early summer weather and I'm sick of it.

Longlazyday · 10/06/2024 08:29

East Anglia - expected to reach balmy high of 13 degrees. We have windchill so drop temperature at least a couple of degrees.

I have reverted back to full winter gear today, including woolly hat and gloves. 😬

3DayStockpiler · 10/06/2024 08:37

It's freezing, wild, windy and white!
Every time I look up at the sky this year it's just white. No blue bits and cloud, not even dark clouds just......nothingy overcast...

SurelySmartie · 10/06/2024 08:38

Freezing here in the north around 13 degrees and back in winter coat.

icelolly12 · 10/06/2024 08:39

After a dire winter, I gritted my teeth sure that we'd have a pleasant May and a glorious June. After all last year's June was lovely with a few weeks of more or less solid sunshine. The year before we had a fantastic year with lots of blue skies and clear days throughout as well as a few heatwaves.

I cannot believe that next week is the longest day of the year and I'm waking up to grey skies, rain and a high of 13 degrees. This is depressing.

Misthios · 10/06/2024 08:41

All the "snuggly under my blankie with a hot choccie, all cosy" people who relish the winter and don't like having to speak to people outside are loving it.

It is considerably cooler than it should be at this stage in June. Hoping for something a bit warmer soon.

Yes, it's the lack of sunshine that's really getting to me, we seem to be blanketed in grey cloud all year round. It's not usually this grey and bleak. Usually we get a decent amount of crisp clear winter days and lovely sunny days in Spring and Summer. This year, grey, grey and more grey.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/06/2024 08:51

It’s blowing a gale here at the mo - outer SW London. And I was woken up by the sound of heavy rain.

Misthios · 10/06/2024 08:52

BBC weather has just said a touch of frost on the gardens tomorrow in Scotland. IN JUNE.

Echobelly · 10/06/2024 08:54

Does wind me up when we're having a bit of a rubbish summer and papers start crowing things like '20C heatwave on the way this weekend!'. 20C is never a heatwave. Seven days of 28C+ is a 'heatwave'.

Misthios · 10/06/2024 09:00

Today in Glasgow we are "basking" in 14c. Overnight it's going to drop to 6c. Tropical. 🙄

I do believe in global warming and it's stupid to say that just because it's colder than usual at the moment that global warming is a hoax. But the last year or so of weather has been just awful, so wet and relentlessly rainy.

DappledThings · 09/06/2024 19:53

19 is plenty hot. It was that here today. We had a picnic. Counted as basking to me.

@DappledThings

Come on now, its not hot is it

be real

Comedycook · 10/06/2024 09:04

When I watch weather forecasts nowadays, even mild temperatures are often represented by bright red on the map...I really find it very manipulative. Trying to get us panicking about climate change and insinuating 23 degrees in the UK in summer is some sort of unprecedented event.

Exactly!!

3DayStockpiler · 10/06/2024 09:08

Warm enough to me is when the air has warmed sufficiently that when the sun goes in it's still warm.
I spent Saturday on and off with my coat. Even though it was pleasant enough for walking around a city, it was debatable whether it was going to be ok to sit outside comfortably for lunch.

I said "plenty hot". As in hot enough for me. Not heatwave hot (thankfully). Perfectly pleasant being out having a picnic.

When the sun breaks through at this time of year then 19 suddenly feels a lot more than that in direct sun but yesterday only had to contend with that in brief moments.

WingSlutz · 10/06/2024 09:10

It's 10 degrees and raining here (London). Just waved off DC1 on their Yr 6 residential trip. Poor kids!
I'm cold and pissed off. June my arse.

willWillSmithsmith · 10/06/2024 09:55

19 is around my perfect temperature. It wasn’t that round my way though and I felt pretty cold later in the day.

@DappledThings

ive got my fingers crossed for a heat wave! I like it much hotter than 19!

blobby10 · 10/06/2024 10:32

I'm one of those 'hardy' souls who discards her jeans and leggings on 1st May and lives in shorts (outside of work) until 1st October. However even my hardiness is being tested this month! I don't think I've had a single week this year where I haven't got soaked to the skin at least two days of the weeks whilst walking the dog. This morning it was 8 degrees then went down to 7 in the torrential rain. I've put the heating back on at work - mainly to dry out my dog walking clothes but also because its blooming FREEZING!! Am camping in Cornwall in July - my clothes list will now have jeans, leggings and warm jumpers at the top rather than shorts and T Shirts!

MissyB1 · 10/06/2024 10:49

The Government have probably told them to convince us it's a fantastic summer! As usual they think we are thick enough to fall for it.

As for climate change, what that actually means for the UK is just wetter weather, not hotter.

ohtowinthelottery · 10/06/2024 11:07

I'd have happily basked in 19°C but it was so cold here yesterday I put the heating back on last night so we could all thaw out! Definitely not a beach day - unless you had a winter coat on because the North wind was biting.
