Love this very optimistic headline. 18 C - 19 C is fine - but it's not basking sunshine

Brits head to the beaches to enjoy the sunshine as the country basks in 19C heat but rain is expected to sweep across the nation tonight.

After a chilly start in the morning, the south west of England has enjoyed balmy weather with people making the most of the weather by heading outside.

Large crowds of sun-worshippers have been spotted on Lyme Regis beach in Dorset, where temperatures could go as high 18C. The highest temperature of the day is expected to be on the Isle of Wight where the mercury could rise to a warm but pleasant 19C.

19 is plenty hot. It was that here today. We had a picnic. Counted as basking to me.

I'm in the Southern Hemisphere, it's winter, last weekend we had a day with 22 degrees. It was lovely - for winter. 19 degrees in summer is not what I would call "plenty hot".

EnthENd · 10/06/2024 03:32

Yabu for giving the Daily Mail the time of day.

Jennybeans401 · 10/06/2024 04:42

North East here and it's freezing

19 is fine. But it's not basking.

It's pleasant

As the definition of basking includes the word pleasant then maybe 19 degrees is basking..! I think it’s towards the bottom end of acceptable temperatures to use the word for, but if it was very hot then I wouldn’t use the world basking either

They are so desperately trying to keep morale up.
My favourites are always the headlines ‘Britain set to be hotter than Corfu/Malaga/Namibia’ - yeah for about an hour 🙄

Why would a newspaper give a hootsie about keeping morale up? Apart from the owners wanting tax cuts, their only interest is selling newspapers and getting clicks.

ageratum1 · 10/06/2024 04:57

To play unto the global warming narrative

BeBopBeBop · 10/06/2024 04:59

Just to give you all hope, I'm heading back to UK next week from the insanely hot tropical island where I live. I desperately want a summer of jumpers and jeans and if I'm really lucky a coat! But... every bloody time I arrive it turns into a heatwave summer. So given my luck the sun is due to hit the Uk around Tuesday.

Oblomov24 · 10/06/2024 05:10

Not warm here in Surrey yesterday. 19 degrees is hardly a heatwave is it?

WaitingfortheTardis · 10/06/2024 05:54

We live in the SW and it's been quite chilly the last few days. 19 would be very pleasant, but it has been about 12-14 here. And now it's drizzling.

@swimsong Because the Daily Mail owners want another Tory government and think that if the electorate is happy they'll vote Tory. I'm not agreeing with that, just guessing their motive.

camelfinger · 10/06/2024 06:08

Doesn’t really matter what the temperature is. Yesterday morning in London it was sunny and warm so I basked in the sunshine by having a cup of tea sitting in the garden. I know it’s different across the country as it always is but it was pretty accurate from where I was. If it was 30 degrees it would have been too hot to bask in the sunshine, I’d be in the shade.

Kittensat36 · 10/06/2024 06:11

I have an event to go to today. A couple of weeks ago, I was worried that it might turn hot and did i have anything summery yet formal that I could wear? My suit might be too much.

What an idiot.

I am currently trying to decide between a couple of jumpers to wear with said suit and would I be able to get away with a pale pink rainmac over a dark purple coat?????

Kittensat36 · 10/06/2024 06:12

*Instead of over, not wearing the coat AND Mac.

garlictwist · 10/06/2024 06:15

Just got up here in Yorkshire. My laptop says it's 7 degrees and heavy rain, which looking out of the window seems pretty accurate. I've had to turn the lights on it's so dark.

To be fair, they might be right about Namibia seeing as it's winter there.

CormorantStrikesBack · 10/06/2024 06:42

8 degrees here, raining. Forecast to reach 9 degrees today but rain all day. I’ve dug my padded Barbour out.

I guess I should be thankful then, as we're forecast to have highs of 12° and heavy rain.

I want less of this - ⛈️⛄

And more of this ☀️🏖️

Gunpowder · 10/06/2024 06:48

I think the warmest May on record is because night temperatures have been high. So global warming AND miserable in the day. Worst of both worlds.

I think the Mail are either trolling or they have standard articles for slow news days and just grab the appropriate one from the corresponding month in the Filofax.

User364837 · 10/06/2024 06:51

They’re gaslighting us!

im in the camp of being grateful for a temperate June (relieved it’s not been hot for GCSEs) but I agree OP they are talking nonsense.
there’s still been a freshness and chill in the air

MrsYawn · 10/06/2024 06:56

It’s so chilly here, biting wind and lots of heavy showers. You can feel your mood lowering with the thermometer. I feel sorry for the tourists in their shorts and bewildered expressions!

mondaytosunday · 10/06/2024 07:00

Yea basking. I was at the beach yesterday and there were indeed people 'basking' in the sun, but there was a distinct lack of heat to go with it!
Ten days ago I planned a picnic with some friends and temps were predicted to be 26 degrees that day. Just looked now and it's changed to 17 😩.

ErnestCelendine · 10/06/2024 07:01

Pissing it down and might hit 15 degrees. Feels like it's permanently October, whatever the month on the calendar.

The heady heights of 17 degrees! We got up to 13 but the ‘feels like’ was, as usual 6 degrees lower.

I would advise you wear both! 😁

Two t-shirts and thick cardigan for a walk yesterday, which I assumed would be reasonable but ended up putting a coat on too. I was still cold!
