Do you do skincare?

thegrassisgreeeen · 08/06/2024 00:23

In my early 30's and I don't do any skincare, wash my face daily but that's it. Do you do skincare? Should I be doing it now? Aibu to think I don't need to start a skincare routine and surely it's not as common as I'm led to believe?

If I'm wrong, where do I start?

No I dont

cadburyegg · 08/06/2024 00:49

I'm the same. Wash my face, moisturise. That's it tbh. I've always had good skin although it's less good since I've gained weight.

No time for a million lotions and potions

loropianalover · 08/06/2024 00:58

Do you have good skin? Dry/oily?

I’d definitely at least be putting on suncream every day if you don’t already, and a moisturiser.

BreadInCaptivity · 08/06/2024 01:04

Depends what you mean by skincare.

I have sensitive skin and am very careful about what I put on my face.

I cleanse morning and night. I use an Elemis balm rather than soap but same principle.

Then I put on some moisturiser.

Don't use eye cream/neck cream. Waste of time. It's all just moisturiser. You just need the right one (same as cleanser) for your skin.

Only other addition is using SPF in the morning as I use a moisturiser that doesn't have one.

That's it. Then pop on some tinted moisturiser to even out my skin, mascara, lip stain and then balm and some cream blush. Might add some concealer under my eyes or on a blemish if needed.

On a night out will add subtle eyeliner/eye make up and a more intense lipstick.

Catsmere · 08/06/2024 01:49

Nope. I'm 60 and just wash my face with warm water. I probably should use moisturiser now my skin's drying with age, but I never remember to.

This. sunscreen and moisturiser.

It does not take much. I use Nivea and a facial oil (almond). Cheap as chips. It is an investment as your face will eventually crack up when you get older.

Firefly1987 · 08/06/2024 02:27

No I don't really follow skincare stuff so not really sure what I'm supposed to be doing. I do put lotion on sometimes after a shower and I have to put nivea on my face at night because it's horribly dry. But that's it. I'm in my mid-30s and my skin looks quite unhealthy now-dry/dull/pale. I need to get my thyroid tested to see if that's partly to blame though. Also poor diet which probably has more to do with it than skincare routines. I don't get enough sun either.

Saying that my nan had great skin and wore some special creams, not sure which though. She was also careful only to wash her face with cold water. Amused the nurses in hospital when they brought her warm/hot water to wash her face in and she said "goodness no only ever wash your face with cold water!" I have to say I don't always follow that advice. Whatever she did worked for her-she had barely any wrinkles even into her 90s and no one believed how old she was everywhere she went (she loved telling everyone her age) good genes as well! But they haven't been passed on to me I don't think 😔

Does your skin look good OP? I feel like most women probably do have a routine for this and use a lot of products. Other women just seem to know this stuff!

curious79 · 08/06/2024 02:29

A lot is about the genes and then the next bit is sun exposure
I’ve always had a simple routine - face wash and moisturiser- and always worn some foundation, which ends up being a sunscreen. My skin is wrinkle free and looks good m. My mum was the same

rubyroola · 08/06/2024 02:42

Not beyond spf, not using soap/harsh stuff on my face and moisturising morning and night. I think lotions and potions are a con and Botox is way more effective.

DramaAlpaca · 08/06/2024 03:22

I'm twice OP's age, with few lines and good skin.

I don't "do" skincare. I drink loads of water, wash face in water only, use sunscreen in summer but mainly I just stay out of the sun. I've never smoked. I don't bother with makeup unless I'm going out. I'm on HRT, which keeps my skin nicely plumped. I hardly ever use moisturiser and wouldn't go near botox or fillers.

But I think the most important thing is genetics. Thanks mum and nan.

GogAndMagog · 08/06/2024 03:42

abracadabra1980 · 08/06/2024 03:51

Not now. I wash with water and a mini flannel and slap on Neutrogena hand cream. I'm told my skin is really ok for my age (53) - I have largely used any old cream with SPF in it and stayed out of the sun.

Thepossibility · 08/06/2024 05:24

I do. My skin is probably better now at 40 than it was at 30 because I've upped my game.

Bringbackthebeaver · 08/06/2024 05:28

Well you don't need to, but basic things like using an SPF has been shown to protect your skin.

I don't buy into using a million different overpriced products, but I do use a few things that make my skin feel and look good and hopefully protect it - a good face wash, tretinoin, SPF and a nice moisturiser.

Really though the best anti-ageing method is a healthy diet and exercise.

ShorterWorkingYear · 08/06/2024 05:33

Wash it with just water in the shower, and use factor 50 in the summer. That's it. Don't moisturise, ever, and no makeup. I'm 60, and I probably look it, though I do often get complimented on looking younger. I don't worry about drinking water either.

urbanbuddha · 08/06/2024 05:59

Always do skincare, but it’s fairly minimal. Cleanse, serum, spf for days. Nights are cleanse, serum, moisturise one night, then cleanse, tretinoin the next night. And I exfoliate weekly and use a face pack occasionally.

StellaShining · 08/06/2024 06:19

Yes I do, but agree with most other comments that a lot comes down to genes and sun protection.

I watch YouTube videos by Dr Shereene Idriss, she’s a dermatologist in her 40s and cuts through a lot of the nonsense and false promises.

yourlittleworldfallingapart · 08/06/2024 07:16

Yes I do. Cleanse, serum, moisturiser, twice a day. It takes no more than a couple of minutes and makes my face look and feel miles better.

ASighMadeOfStone · 08/06/2024 07:27

I do, but it's up to you.

The only "skincare" that should be an absolute is SPF every day. To help prevent skin cancer.

Skin needs to be:

Clean
Hydrated
Protected from the sun.

That's all. Obviously, even the first one is subjective. Some people like cleansers, some like soap. It's objective that your face is going to be carrying a significant amount of (possibly) invisible grime on it by the end of the day.

Not everyone needs to moisturise. But by the same token, there are people with very oily skin who do. In summer I tend to skip morning moisturizer and apply a thicker SPF.

If you want to cut through the "buy 48 different serums from The Ordinary or you'll regret it" stuff, watch Nadine Baggott's 5 ingredients video. In it she covers the 3 essentials I mentioned above, plus vitamin C and A. She also does webinars with derms and none of them use loads of stuff, or big branded expensive stuff.

KnittedCardi · 08/06/2024 08:17

I don't do much tbh. And never did. I am late 50's so we didn't use SPF, or Tret or any of the modern added this, added that, stuff you get now. Just basic cleanse, moisturise. You know what? Myself and most of my friends have great skin. We are all quite well off, eat well, don't smoke, spend a lot of time in the garden, long walks. I suspect mostly its good genes.

The one friend who doesn't look great, is the one who has messed about with her face. She now looks distinctly off somehow. It's a shame.

MerelyPlaying · 08/06/2024 08:23

I think a lot of good skin is down to your genes. Mine has never been good, and was very oily when I was younger. I subscribed to the ‘water and moisturiser’ routine for years.

Last year I started using a face wash morning and evening, and I’m astonished at the difference, I no longer get breakouts. I buy products from Aldi, cheap as chips and every bit as good as (some say the same as) more expensive stuff. Retinol (Boots No 7) has really made a difference, my skin feels smoother. SPF is very important, so don’t ignore that, but you don’t need to spend a fortune. I’m in my sixties by the way.

TipsyKoala · 08/06/2024 08:23

All of you saying you use spf, do you mean sun screen or moisturiser with spf? I’d love a recommendation for a good non-greasy one to wear every day!

HandsDown84 · 08/06/2024 08:27

I've used a decent moisturiser and SPF since I was 16 and I look younger than I am. I sometimes use hyaluronic acid for a few days before a wedding or holiday.

I don't believe in loads of different products though, particularly eye cream. I also don't wear foundation - I think that can be a vicious cycle!

Cleanser wise I use any cheap micellar water.

Clingfilm · 08/06/2024 08:29

Sort of, for ageing, but it's hardly doing wonders, I'm convinced good it's 90% down to genes, and unfortunately I come from a long line of hard working rough faced women 😂

The only thing that really makes a difference are injectables.

Clingfilm · 08/06/2024 08:29

*that not good!
