Do you do skincare?

In my early 30's and I don't do any skincare, wash my face daily but that's it. Do you do skincare? Should I be doing it now? Aibu to think I don't need to start a skincare routine and surely it's not as common as I'm led to believe?

If I'm wrong, where do I start?

All of you saying you use spf, do you mean sun screen or moisturiser with spf? I’d love a recommendation for a good non-greasy one to wear every day!

I use Simple Triple Protect moisturiser. SPF30. In the summer though I up it to La Roche Posay Anthelios which is SPF50 and is just a sunscreen, and skip the moisturiser.

fieldsofbutterflies · 08/06/2024 08:31

I cleanse, tone and moisturise and wear sunscreen everyday.

TheChosenTwo · 08/06/2024 08:32

I do but only because I enjoy the relaxing process after getting showered in the morning and again before bed, I don’t genuinely believe any of it has an impact on my skin!!

buffyslayer · 08/06/2024 08:33

I do but fairly simple. Used to have quite bad acne
I cleanse, use tret, moisturise, SPF

hby9628 · 08/06/2024 08:36

I go through phases where I think I should but whenever I start to use fancy products it seems to have the adverse effect. I've started using Cerave which is working well for me at the moment so I think I'll just stick with that

LastRites · 08/06/2024 08:36

I began getting hormonal acne in my mid 30s (I’m 38) which was painful and constant. I now use a serum to treat that which contains retinol, niacinamide and an antibiotic. I use it nightly and my skin has been perfect since - no spots even during my period and I rarely wear much make up.

I cleanse in the morning and then use moisturiser followed by SPF50; evenings I cleanse, moisturise, serum

SpongeBob2022 · 08/06/2024 08:47

I use basic moisturiser once a day. I'm prone to mild acne so I do have a skincare routine in the sense that I use an exfoliator a couple of times a week and a face mask once a week, which seems to keep it at bay. Neither are expensive.

I wouldn't use anything super-expensive or that claims to help with aging. Happy to be corrected on the aging thing but my own view would be that these are a total waste of money.

Mindyourfunkybusiness · 08/06/2024 09:25

I went to dermatologist and she's given instructions and I've never looked better. Before that I didn't bother at all with skincare. Its an easy way to find out what would work for your skin and be done.

Sunscreen is best, but as long as you put enough moisturizer on, it's fine. But you do need 2 full fingers worth. That's why makeup with SPF isn't recommended by derms. We simply don't put enough on.

The only proven anti-ageing ingredient is Vitamin A (retinoids/tret)
Vitamin C is an anti-oxident so helps your sunscreen and shields against pollution.
Active acids, (AHA for ageing skin, BHA for oily skin) treat specific issues but aren't in themselves anti-ageing.

Any product not containing any of the above (or containing them after the first 5 ingredients on the list) isn't doing anything other than cleaning or hydrating.

Both Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair and Clarins Double Serum are expensive and make anti-ageing claims. Both are full of good, cheap hydrating ingredients. Same as the Superdrug one that will cost £3

CeraVe is the gold standard. ❤️

I wash my face with water only (occasionally Dove) and moisturise morning and night, with morning and night creams that I buy from Lidl or Aldi. The rest of my body is moisturised daily with whatever moisturiser is cheap and/or in a pump bottle (because I'm lazy). Tbh I moisturise because my skin is dry, not because it's a skincare routine.

Other than that- I rarely wear make up, and when I do it's removed with sensitive baby wipes. Suntan lotion when I go abroad, or if I'm out for the whole day on a particularly hot day here.

I'm not convinced that expensive products and a complicated skincare routine are necessary, BUT that's based on my own skin and experience. I think I'm just lucky not to have problem skin (apart from the odd spot, now that I'm in my mid 50s )

Always do skincare, but it’s fairly minimal. Cleanse, serum, spf for days. Nights are cleanse, serum, moisturise one night, then cleanse, tretinoin the next night. And I exfoliate weekly and use a face pack occasionally.

I don't think that's "minimal". I use a tinted moisturizer as my skincare / makeup up combo and occasionally, if I remember, a plain cheap boots own brand moisturiser at night. That's pretty much it. I'm 48, v few wrinkles or anything. I just could never be bothered with it.

BouleDeSuif · 08/06/2024 09:40

Wash face, Nivea Soft in the morning
Wash face, Lidl night cream at night.

KreedKafer · 08/06/2024 09:57

Nobody has to ‘do skincare’. It’s a choice. If you want to use nothing at all on your skin, that’s fine.

Personally, my own skin looks a lot brighter, clearer and healthier with some skincare that’s right for my particular skin type. I use a cleanser, a serum and an SPF moisturiser in the morning and a cleanser, an exfoliating toner, serum and moisturiser at night. None of my products are especially expensive, and it takes me less than five minutes to do. Sometimes, if I feel a bit haggard and I’ve got 15 minutes to spare, I might whack on a nice face mask every few weeks.

But that’s my choice. I like doing it and I like the way my skin looks when I do. It’s not compulsory! I also know a fair bit about ingredients, what makes a difference and how and why, so I’m not just chucking stuff at my face thinking it will make wrinkles disappear - I know which product claims are realistic and which are bollocks and I choose my products carefully. Nobody is obliged to do any of this stuff.

I’m interested to see people saying “Oh I don’t do skincare! I just wash my face and put some moisturiser on, or maybe SPF.” All of those things are skincare!

Chocolateorange22 · 08/06/2024 10:02

Nah not really. Mid 30's and I just wash and moisturise. I do use Q10 with added vitamin C and SPF moisturiser. No idea what half of the stuff does like hydro something acid and other things with weird names do.

Simonjt · 08/06/2024 10:08

I do, I get extremely dry cracked skin if I don’t.

In the morning I just rinse my face, apply hylauronic acid, moisturiser and spf50.

Evening wash my face twice, pat dry, tretinoin, serum, moisturise, on a non-tret evening I wash twice, serum onto wet skin, moisturise.

TeenDivided · 08/06/2024 10:09

No. 50s. Don't do makeup either.

This. sunscreen and moisturiser.

It does not take much. I use Nivea and a facial oil (almond). Cheap as chips. It is an investment as your face will eventually crack up when you get older.

Cheap as chips. Where do you get your chips from because I’ll have to pay them a visit🤣. They’re like 3.50 a portion where I live.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/06/2024 10:56

Nivea day cream

PM
Wash with foaming cleanser
Serum or face oil
Nivea cream

Works for me

Mum2aTeen · 08/06/2024 11:23

No not really.
I put moisturiser on when dry and occasionally I use a mask and scrub when I think (like once a month if that) but usually just water and soap.
I'm late 30s and still get acne like a teen once a month but tbh I have no idea about skin care and since there are millions of millions products out there I don't need that on my life and I'm really not to bothered by it like 27 days out of the month my face/skin is pretty good so I don't see the need I also don't wear make up or anything .

I use sunscreen and wear hats sunnies etc that's about it.

StormingNorman · 08/06/2024 11:38

Dermalogica cleansers are the best I’ve ever used and the staff are fab at recommendations for your skin type. I use a cleanser and microfoliant daily in the morning. Just cleanser in the evening or with their pre-cleanse oil too when my skin is playing up or looks a bit dull.

Then Dr Denis Gross Vitamin C moisturiser AM and PM. And I just tried a retinol serum in the evenings for the first time - cheapy from Boots in case I reacted badly. Not sure it’s doing anything.

Finish with La Roche Posay Anthelios sunscreen in the morning.

sounds a lot but only takes a couple of minutes.

DappledThings · 08/06/2024 11:44

No. It gets washed in the shower, mainly passively by water running down it.

I can see the argument for SPF every day of the year but I can't see myself ever remembering to do that. I put suncream on when it's really sunny.

Ispywithmylittlepie · 08/06/2024 11:45

I go through phases. It's much better when I do the exfoliating wash, toner and facial moisturizer leaving eye area for a lighter serum or cream. I was very lazy recently and used my son's eczema cream and I've caused Milia (hard little white bumps) which I can't get rid of. Now I'm back using the routine in the hope to get rid of them. I had some collagen under eye patches on for 15 mins yesterday and I'm going to buy a retinol eye cream. A cheap Vitamin C eye gel I use at the minute. Avon hyaluronic acid serum was great so I might buy that again. I used Clinique products when younger and loved those. M&S products also good, I had a facial wash called Emma Hardie from an advent calendar, which was brilliant. Also a moringa balm. Expensive but I'm toying with getting more. One thing I won't do again is put a heavy body moisturizer on my face because I'm lazy.
