Do you do skincare?

thegrassisgreeeen · 08/06/2024 00:23

In my early 30's and I don't do any skincare, wash my face daily but that's it. Do you do skincare? Should I be doing it now? Aibu to think I don't need to start a skincare routine and surely it's not as common as I'm led to believe?

If I'm wrong, where do I start?

I wash my face with a gentle cleanser twice a day and moisturise with a little argan oil. If I'm going out in the sun for any length of time I use sunscreen. I don't wear make up. I'm 54, I feel happy with my skin, which used to be oily but is much less so since menopause.

wizzywig · 08/06/2024 11:53

Yes I do and I love beauty treatments and makeup too. I havent tried botox or fillers. It's my self care and I love it

BeaRF75 · 08/06/2024 11:57

No. I'm nearly 60. I just wash my face in the shower. I have a few wrinkles, but not too many, considering my age.
Life's too short to faff about with lotions and potions - not to mention the horrendous cost! We all age - just accept it.

Elphame · 08/06/2024 12:22

No I don't.

To have any real effect they have to be absorbed into the skin and I really don't want some of those chemicals in my body.

yellowsmileyface · 08/06/2024 12:34

I mean, technically just washing your face is skincare.

I don't believe you need a full ten step routine day and night, using a plethora of overpriced products.

I just use a cleanser and moisturiser day and night, with an SPF throughout the day. I use an exfoliating cleanser a few times a week. I also use sheet masks a couple of times a week just to feel a bit pampered.

I've trialled a number of different products, such as toner, serums, eye cream, etc. I just don't notice enough of a difference to justify the cost. I do like the ritual of having some sort of skincare routine, but a simple one works best for me.

Cheap as chips. Where do you get your chips from because I’ll have to pay them a visit🤣. They’re like 3.50 a portion where I live.

Not quite 3.50 but not far off 😂

I never used to bother but I've started to look a bit jowly so am making sure I cleanse, tone and moisturise. I'm the least proactive person ever but I cleanse in the shower, tone at the sink whilst brushing my teeth, and moisturise with a Vitamin C cream.

Yep
I think everyone should wash their face, because well it's parts of your body! And wear SPF
Doesn't have to be expensive or complex

That's not true, it's a myth perpetuated by the "natural" beauty industry.
Think about it. Skin is a literal barrier. Designed to keep things out. If stuff in moisturizer got through, it's pretty shit at that, no?

RedRobyn2021 · 08/06/2024 13:12

I'm the same as you, 33 and I wash my face but I never understand these skincare routines

I just don't get them that's the only reason I don't do it

RedRobyn2021 · 08/06/2024 13:14

I have an oil based cleanser that I use, it's nice because it makes taking make up off really easy and I use a moisturiser

But only been doing that for 3/4 years before that I literally washed my face with Simple face soap

@Elphame LabMuffin is a formulating chemist and highly respected in the industry. She explains well how people don't understand that skin is in layers and some products are designed to penetrate some layers to do their job, but nothing is going any further than it should.

There's also been a huge rise in dermatitis and allergic reactions in recent years caused (dermatologists agree) by the natural beauty myth. People are going for "preservative free" etc which is actually not a good thing.

The “60% of products absorb into your bloodstream” myth | Lab Muffin Beauty Science

The myth that "60% of what's applied to your skin is absorbed into your bloodstream" is one of my pet peeves. It's so far from the truth, and it's cited with such an air of authority that it really…

I think good skin is mostly down to genetics & lifestyle.

If you’ve always been a heavy smoker/drinker/sun worshipper, it will catch up with you eventually.

I’ve never smoked, I don’t drink and I’ve been wearing sunscreen on my face/neck since my late teens (thanks mum!)

I’m nearly 40, my skin looks good & I look younger than I am. (Not delusional, just what people always tell me!🫣)

My skincare is simple, takes 2 mins- I just use water in the morning, then add vit c serum, followed by a moisturiser, followed by spf. The evening is a cleanser, followed by moisturiser.
I use a little castor oil twice a week as an extra boost.

Do you have any skin complaints? Is your skin dry? If you’ve never used anything and you’re happy with your skin, you probably don’t ‘need’ anything. A gentle moisturiser wouldn’t be a bad thing though.

Hankunamatata · 08/06/2024 13:39

I started getting wrinkly neck in my late 30s (late 40s now) so just started washing face and using a good moisturiser with spf in the day and night cream at night - I prefer olay creams but have been using aveeno none foaming face wash recently as was recommended at a menopause talk I went to

IamMoodyBlue · 08/06/2024 13:40

Warm water & clean face cloth daily
. SPF 30 if going to be outside for over an hour or so in UK. SPF 50 if outside 'down south' No make up, ever. Skin is absolutely fine. I"m in my 60s.
I do use a cheap hand cream sometimes after washing hands with soap & water.

Your skin will slowly change and fine lines appear as the decades go by, whatever you put onto your skin now. Protecting ftom sun damage with a reasonably high SPF cream is likely the only positive thing you can do.
And not smoking!

bakewellbride · 08/06/2024 13:49

I use boots own brand cleanser, toner and moisturiser. Buying all 3 costs less than a fiver combined! I use them morning and evening then every Sunday I do a face mask from Superdrug (£1 each). Cheap and cheerful.

I am nearly 35 and got ID'ed buying my dh beer today so must be doing something right!

I believe a healthy diet and lifestyle is the best thing for skin anyway.

thegrassisgreeeen · 08/06/2024 13:54

Thanks all. Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't have a strict skincare regime.

Like others I keep meaning to moisturise my face but often forget.

Hopefully I still have good skin for years to come Grin

Wash my face, use a scrub once a week, stick on a bit of moisturiser when I remember. I'm 43 and have good skin.
Maybe it's because I've always had good skin that it's never been necessary to do more than the basics.

kanet · 08/06/2024 13:58

I wash my face with baby soap when I am in the shower.

That's it.

Nothing else. I'm nearing 50. My skin looks just like the next person of my age. Not great, not totally shit - just skin.

FelineGood76 · 08/06/2024 14:01

Yes. Spf 50 every day regardless of weather as uva rays always there.
Cerave moisturiser. Dermatitca tretinoin, just upped my prescription to 0.05% as I'm taking it slowly.
Retin A is the only proven cream to work at the deeper skin level to build collagen and reverse damage. It takes months to see any effect.

Fontainebleau007 · 08/06/2024 14:03

I use elave cleanser and moisturiser as my skin is quite dry and I find using this makes it sooo soft! Other than that I'll use cerave face wash and L'Oréal day/night cream.
I go for a facial/massage once every 6 weeks too, an hour and a half of bliss! I do find it helps with my skin and I feel so much better for it. I'm 32 and didn't care at all for my skin up until I was 30.

Tana433 · 08/06/2024 14:06

I never used to but since turning 50 ive decided to pay more attention. Wash, cleanse, tone and moisturise morning and evening just using Simple skincare range. I also drink at least 2 litres of water a day and get plenty of sleep which i think helps.

Tretinoin has been fab for my skin
I'm not one who usually says I look younger but I got asked for ID in specsavers for my free eye test as she wasn't convinced I was 40 Grin

No acne, much smoother and glowier skin

Bignanna · 08/06/2024 17:31

HandsDown84 · 08/06/2024 08:27

I've used a decent moisturiser and SPF since I was 16 and I look younger than I am. I sometimes use hyaluronic acid for a few days before a wedding or holiday.

I don't believe in loads of different products though, particularly eye cream. I also don't wear foundation - I think that can be a vicious cycle!

Cleanser wise I use any cheap micellar water.

Pointless using hyaluronic acid for a few days- you have to use it every day!

You don’t have to accept the worst ravages of age eg jowls and turkey neck. Embrace ageing? No-knock it for six!
