Don’t get rid of DVDs and CDs

I have heard of people getting rid of physical media (DVDs, CDs etc) as they stream everything.

Well my broadband went down yesterday afternoon and it came back on but on a very slow speed. Not fast enough for supporting streaming. The problem is with the exchange and could be down as late as Monday. Since then the internet has gone down again.

Well it’s a good job I have loads of DVDs and CDs.

Then with some streaming services they can remove films and tv series with no or little warning.

Im using my mobile internet to compose the message.

We don’t have any devices which we could play DVDs or CDs on - haven’t had for years

chaosmaker · 06/06/2024 13:08

I agree OP!

Okayornot · 06/06/2024 13:09

We've started buying DVDs again after a break, because I don't trust streaming services to always be available, and also because sometimes I want to watch something that isn't available.
Our little DVD player was something like £30.

"Then with some streaming services they can remove films and tv series with no or little warning."

Yes, even when you've paid for them.

Totally agree with you OP

Donating to places that use CDs and DVDs eg hospitals and schools is also a good solution.

Same here

WittiestUsernameEver · 06/06/2024 13:11

or you know... read a book.

Danikm151 · 06/06/2024 13:11

I still have all my dvds and I’ve recently been purchasing some.

yes, it takes up room at home but we can easily select a film we know we have a watch without risking the internet going down. Also, saves money on streaming sites. I got 10 dvds for £1 at a charity shop.

ChessieFL · 06/06/2024 13:11

I’ve never got rid of my CDs and DVDs because I don’t trust that things will always be available to stream when I want them, plus I have lots of DVDs that don’t seem to be available for streaming (or not without paying additional money on top of streaming subscriptions).

GinToBegin · 06/06/2024 13:12

I think YANBU, broadly, but I’m currently having a big clear out of CDs and DVDs, only keeping the ones that we might want to listen to/watch. Luckily our local charity shops can make use of what we don’t want, so a bit of a clear out will hopefully do some good all round.

Same here

And here.

When the wifi goes down we have to read books or make conversation.

Wednesdayonline · 06/06/2024 13:12

I'd imagine most people have loads of data included in their mobile plan these days. I would just watch on my phone or use a hotspot from it.

EmeraldRoulette · 06/06/2024 13:12

Agree OP

plus you need your faves, they could get withdrawn from streaming services. I'm short on space but keeping these!

notedbiscuits · 06/06/2024 13:42

Another thing on streaming, you don’t get the extras - making of, bloopers etc

Op it’s hilarious you’ve said this today- there was a guy on the radio about Marie kondo-ing your house and the first thing I thought was ‘is it time to get rid of’? A few years back we had the same, internet down and tv didn’t even work as a result (progress my foot!!!) and we watched dvds for days. (I know I sound 100 but I’m only 43!!)

Hillarious · 06/06/2024 13:49

Meanwhile, my daughter is buying vinyl . . .

stayathomer · 06/06/2024 13:49

Ps only problem for some is I wonder now will new tvs even have the ability to connect players?

Sgtmajormummy · 06/06/2024 13:55

My DVD player stopped working the other day and my current laptop doesn’t have a CD slot.
I’ll have a go at repairing it but no way am I buying a new player.

So it’s either buy a second hand player or have hundreds of CDs (I was already using the DVD player as a stereo) and DVDs gathering dust.

BettyUnderswoob · 06/06/2024 13:57

Just a few days ago DD bought a CD player and some CDs in a charity shop! She wants a record player for her birthday.

It did occur to me, browsing vinyl, CDs and DVDs with her that you can't donate your streamed and downloaded music to charity. You can't lend or gift them to a friend or keep them for your children. Lose your account and devices and they're gone forever!

deragod · 06/06/2024 13:58

Another good thing about CDs and DVDs - your child can enjoy some age appropriate content without access to swamp internet.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 06/06/2024 14:02

An adult child has nicked borrowed and not returned my DVD player. Thankfully, I have books.

Well said. I insisted on keeping quite a few of both. DH scoffed. He wasn’t scoffing one Christmas when the streaming failed and we had DS who was about 7 plus younger niece and nephew - and I was able to produce a selection of DVDs when they wanted a bit of TV time. There is no way I’m getting rid of mine.

We have a DVD player for each TV and my car has a CD player. Sorted.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 06/06/2024 14:05

I thought you were going to say don't throw them out because you can use them in craft projects. They make great mosaic pieces, if you find the ones that don't split when you cut them.

motherofbabydragon · 06/06/2024 14:06

we are 100% looking into buying dvds of the movies and shows we like as we have noticed a couple of times now where scenes are edited out or all together removed from the streaming service we had been watching it on
