Don’t get rid of DVDs and CDs

I have heard of people getting rid of physical media (DVDs, CDs etc) as they stream everything.

Well my broadband went down yesterday afternoon and it came back on but on a very slow speed. Not fast enough for supporting streaming. The problem is with the exchange and could be down as late as Monday. Since then the internet has gone down again.

Well it’s a good job I have loads of DVDs and CDs.

Then with some streaming services they can remove films and tv series with no or little warning.

Im using my mobile internet to compose the message.

I prefer physical media because of the issue with streaming services not being around for ever.

But I wouldn’t want the hassle of storing them just in case my Internet went down for a few days! We have a ton of things we can (and do) do without the Internet.

I still have all my dvds and I’ve recently been purchasing some.

yes, it takes up room at home but we can easily select a film we know we have a watch without risking the internet going down. Also, saves money on streaming sites. I got 10 dvds for £1 at a charity shop.

I'm the same, I keep buying DVDs and watching, and re-watching, all my favourites. As you said they can be picked up cheaply. I had to buy a new player and it cost a pittance.

I don't play on getting rid of my CDs either.

We bought a DVD player very cheaply a few months ago. We are working our way through all our DVDs. Really good ones we're keeping, others go to the charity shop.

I'm doing that also So far I think I've donated two. 😂

Tinkerbot · 07/06/2024 05:16

If I was a foreign power who had a grudge the first thing I’d do to the opposition is take out a few electricity substations - imagine how scared people would be with no power , no news, no way of contacting anyone once the iPhones went flat.

tiger2691 · 07/06/2024 08:48

Prefer to play records, I have still have around 300 CDs though, recently in a charity shop i saw 6 CDs or DVDs for a £1.

BettyUnderswoob · 07/06/2024 09:19

I found some of my old "burned" CDs recently. I'd buy the MP3 file and make CDs for the kitchen or car. My DC found this Russian site where you could download albums for 99p rather than £10, and we bought packs of blank CDs from Poundland.

We did that a lot! Blush

parkrun500club · 07/06/2024 09:32

I still have a Walkman MP3 player and plug it into some old speakers in my garden office! Old tech can be quite helpful (and saves me a Spotify or whatever subscription cost).

We don’t have any devices which we could play DVDs or CDs on - haven’t had for years

😧

mandlerparr · 07/06/2024 17:55

I agree. Sometimes I wonder if I should have kept the boxes because I have put mine all in specialty storage, but they seem fine.

You could have done million other things: read a book, listened to music, radio…maybe the issue is not the wifi but your own inability to amuse yourself without TV.

Danikm151 · 07/06/2024 18:52

Argos do a decent hdmi dvd player for around £25. It’s tiny!

fetchacloth · 07/06/2024 19:28

I agree OP. I do the same.

AlisonDonut · 07/06/2024 19:30

I still have all my CDs and my LPs and my DVDS and videos.

Plus two turntables.

cookie4640 · 07/06/2024 19:32

Thanks for the reminder! In a weird kind of way I feel like this is prepping for future chaos. The same reason I’ll be buying a fancy water filter, I’ll also stash some dvds (and rebuy a dvd player) incase of going back in time due to WW3 - if we survive.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 07/06/2024 21:02

In the rare eventuality the internet goes down I’ll read a book. Don’t need to own something physical that I’ll watch a handful of times if that. DVDs use up precious resources and end up in landfill for 100s of years.

You reckon there would be power in that situation? If the internet goes, it’ll be because power goes.

SabreIsMyFave · 07/06/2024 22:26

100% agree. DH and I have around 1500 DVDs, and 1000 CDs, and also 500 vinyl albums, and 600 vinyl singles. (Vinyl from late 1960s to early 1990s.) Hell will freeze over before we get rid of them. As you say, when the internet goes down, you can't stream anything!

ALSO, we have some films and TV series(s) that was out in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and noughties, and they are the original 'cut.' (Before the wokierati got hold of it, and took stuff out that is so extremely offensive to their delicate little eyes and ears! 🙄)

SO much is cut of of things made pre 2011-ish (when it's streamed now,) that it renders much of it unwatchable. It often makes no sense.

and a microphone?

couldn't resist.

Mamanyt · 08/06/2024 00:13

I'd like to add "physical books" to that. With the advent of eReaders, so many people are no longer buying them. I live in a hurricane-prone area of the USA, and have gone without power for up to 10 days post-hurricane. Thank GOODNESS I have kept my physical books!

garlictwist · 08/06/2024 05:26

I've kept a few dvds for sentimental reasons, mostly those I bought when living abroad. But it's pointless as I've nothing to play them on.

Vettrianofan · 08/06/2024 05:35

DH says the same as yourself OP. We have crates of DVDs up our loft and have started watching them again . Some films you have to pay for as you rightly say, and others get streamed for a limited time.

I was watching Life is Beautiful the other day, and also It's a Wonderful Life.

Vettrianofan · 08/06/2024 05:46

FiveTreeHill · 06/06/2024 14:13

I love a proper CD/DVD collection. I like browsing through what I've got and chosing, the whole experience of putting on a CD/record is better than streaming it. Plus I can never find my favourite films online.

Can't most games consoles play DVDs? We watch DVDs on the XBOX

I watched recent DVDs on PS4 console.

Ereaders are less of an issue because the battery lasts at least a month between charges.

Londonrach1 · 08/06/2024 06:59

Don't worry I won't. I don't understand why anyone doesn't keep them. We use them daily and I'm picking up loads I didn't have free at the moment.

JudgeJ · 08/06/2024 07:09

Needhelp101 · 06/06/2024 15:52

I purposefully bought a DVD player just as we went into lockdown as assumed that with everyone at home, there might be some streaming problems. It cost about £30 quid and has come in very useful at times, especially when moving house and having to wait for the WiFi to be connected.
Charity shop DVDs are about 50p each, too!

Being very old I have a selection of those DVDs that used to be given free with the Sunday papers! Some are stuff you'd never get on streaming services etc.. I watched the first Bridgerton series and couldn't decide why the mother looked familiar, found out she'd been Colin Firth's love interest in Fever Pitch that I'd watched the previous day.
