Don’t get rid of DVDs and CDs

I have heard of people getting rid of physical media (DVDs, CDs etc) as they stream everything.

Well my broadband went down yesterday afternoon and it came back on but on a very slow speed. Not fast enough for supporting streaming. The problem is with the exchange and could be down as late as Monday. Since then the internet has gone down again.

Well it’s a good job I have loads of DVDs and CDs.

Then with some streaming services they can remove films and tv series with no or little warning.

Im using my mobile internet to compose the message.

We watched a film on DVD last night. The picture quality was distractingly grainy…

BetterWithOrWithout · 14/06/2024 07:27

Grainy sounds like the filmstock. What film was it?

Sgtmajormummy · 14/06/2024 08:43

Atonement, so probably digital. 2007.

I had a clear out of DVDs and got rid of my Star Trek TNG and Frasier DVDs. I’m starting to regret it now, even though the former is on Netflix and the latter’s on the channel 4 streaming app.

We have a blu ray player, which will play ordinary DVDs as well and make them look better. We don’t want to get rid of it as we have a few home videos on DVD including our wedding, holidays and our late parents.

Atonement was shot on 35mm so the graininess could be film grain. But I guess it could be that you're used to a higher resolution.

Still got video recorder.

If you get rid of it, you can't watch memories from. Years ago, family parties, wedding, Birthdays etc.

There are companies that will turn videos into DVDs or put onto memory sticks. As video tapes can degrade.

I have about 430 CDs at home - stored in unit which my stereo sits on and a slimline drawer unit in another room. They don't take up much room. When my old stereo broke I got one of those all in one stereos with speakers built in (speakers took too much room) and a hard drive to store my favourite 25 CDs on

Another thing on streaming, you don’t get the extras - making of, bloopers etc

Oh well. I've lived quite happily without those things for decades.

You can get it done at Tesco photo counter.

I heard that happy with my tapes though.

I’m finding more and more that I’m sick of trying to locate tv shows and films across streaming services. Get a notion to watch a film I love: is it on Netflix? Amazon, Apple TV, Paramount, Disney +? By the time I’ve tracked it down, realised that I have to pay for it anyway even though it’s on a streaming service I pay for, if I still had it on DVD I could be half way through it. It’s maddening and I hate it. We never completely got rid of all our dvds and cds but I’m starting to think about the films, shows and music that I really love, and replacing them with actual physical copies. I’m not concerned about the internet going out for a couple of days as I can amuse myself without a screen, but overall streaming services being so arbitrary with what they will provide is a big problem.
i absolutely do watch things I love more than once and would like to be able to continue doing so.

We still have a DVD player - you can get a film on eBay often for much less than the paid for films on streaming services.
