Don’t get rid of DVDs and CDs

I have heard of people getting rid of physical media (DVDs, CDs etc) as they stream everything.

Well my broadband went down yesterday afternoon and it came back on but on a very slow speed. Not fast enough for supporting streaming. The problem is with the exchange and could be down as late as Monday. Since then the internet has gone down again.

Well it’s a good job I have loads of DVDs and CDs.

Then with some streaming services they can remove films and tv series with no or little warning.

Im using my mobile internet to compose the message.

We've still got our old Blu-ray player and tons of DVDs in the loft. However, we did get rid of quite a few about 10 years ago. I'm gutted I got rid of all our CDs years ago.

Apparently there's a bit of a DVD/Blu-ray revival for this reason, people want to know they have something permanently.

This is me! Mind you we never got rid of ours. Slight hoarding tendancy!

Echobelly · 06/06/2024 19:46

Definitely worth keeping stuff on CD/DVD, especially if it's not well known/a bit 'cult' because it could well vanish from streaming.

Also with the extreme way some politics is going, it's much harder to ban your DVD collection than it would be to remove the films some people decide they don't like from streaming.

Same here

We took our old dvd player and loads of dvd's to my holiday home and if it rains it's very useful having it there.

Growlybear83 · 06/06/2024 20:51

I've never streamed anything. I still have every vinyl single and LP I've ever bought, as well as every CD, DVD, and VHS tapes. We bought a wonderful sound system about 25 years ago which still sounds as good as it ever did.

Another thing on streaming, you don’t get the extras - making of, bloopers etc

Those are the best bits.

gamerchick · 06/06/2024 21:00

I haven't. If I watch something I know I'll watch again, I'll buy it on disc also. I did get rid of the VHS tapes as I wouldn't go back to those.

I won't get games on download either unless I'm forced. I dislike paying for something I'll never own.

Needhelp101 · 06/06/2024 21:02

@parkrun500club ,yes I do this too, and with books as well 🙂

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 06/06/2024 21:05

Also, in defence of buying CDs. I am going to see Taylor Swift this Saturday because I bought the Midnights album on cd, and so got a code for the ticket presale. Wouldn't have been able to get tickets without my CD!

TakeOnFlea · 06/06/2024 21:05

"Donating to places that use CDs and DVDs eg hospitals and schools is also a good solution."

🤣 they'll tell you to sling your hook. Schools might use them for a craft project at a push

FluffyJellyCat · 06/06/2024 21:09

I need to buy a new dvd player but I agree. Lots of the old films I like you need to rent or buy, but you loose them if you leave sky like we did for a year. Dvds are cheaper used on ebay than renting

Goingasteady30 · 06/06/2024 21:16

I keep the entire back catalogue of my favourite music artists CDs. I also keep my favourite boxset DVDs as in some cases you have to subscribe to multi platforms to get access to all of them online.

NImumconfused · 06/06/2024 21:18

My autistic DD15 much prefers to watch films on DVD than streamed for some reason, but DVD players don't seem to last at all - I think we've had 3 fail on us in the last 5 or so years.

My Panasonic CD player I got as an 18th birthday present on the other hand is still going strong, and I'm over 50 now!

or you know... read a book.

Or, you know, gather round and listen the village elders tell stories of your forefathers.

Redshoeblueshoe · 06/06/2024 21:31

We bought a DVD player very cheaply a few months ago. We are working our way through all our DVDs. Really good ones we're keeping, others go to the charity shop.

Summertimer · 06/06/2024 22:05

Cinefile is a David Lynch fan. The streaming availability for Twin Peaks was not great so I gifted a box set one Christmas. He has a few fave things on DVD.

If classical music is your thing, streaming doesn’t encompass everything you might want to listen to. At least the ability to play a CD through decent sound playback is a must

SwordToFlamethrower · 06/06/2024 22:23

Agreed! I love small pagan and folk bands and buy cds as they get the money.

I've recently bought a 90s hi-fi from a car boot sale to play cds and records and it is absolutely fantastic! I love playing cds again. So much better than streaming and I know I've supported bands and artists.

We are caravanners, we take dvds for wet weather days and use a tv with dvd player. Sites often have poor tv reception and unreliable WiFi. We have books, colouring stuff, I take my crochet kit and a selection of dvds.

caravanan · 06/06/2024 22:27

Im using my mobile internet to compose the message.

And I would use mine to listen to music

Youdontevengohere · 06/06/2024 22:29

I don’t own a DVD player! I also only watch TV about 5 times a year so imagine id cope if it went down for any reason.

scalt · 06/06/2024 22:45

Keep your DVDs. In these woke times, politically incorrect films are in danger of being memory holed out of existence. And I’m only half joking.

Thevelvelletes · 06/06/2024 22:45

Danikm151 · 06/06/2024 13:11

I still have all my dvds and I’ve recently been purchasing some.

yes, it takes up room at home but we can easily select a film we know we have a watch without risking the internet going down. Also, saves money on streaming sites. I got 10 dvds for £1 at a charity shop.

That the thing they are worth bugger all now 600 dvds when bought about 5 grand now pennies.

TortillaChipAddict · 06/06/2024 23:57

I got a dvd player from Asda for £21 the other day, and a CD boombox from a charity shop, and have stocked my shelves with charity shop finds for both. I was feeling so overwhelmed and overstimulated with all the streaming options and also felt my kids (6 and 4) were too. We’ve been having movie nights and they’ve naturally reduced their screen time - my youngest has hardly asked for the tablet either since we made the switch. Will be saving £30 a month in streaming subscriptions as well

DexaVooveQhodu · 06/06/2024 23:59

Totally agree! Anything I want to actually own I buy the BluRay. Streaming services can disappear your favourite shows at any time.

My kids prefer picking a film out from a stack of dvds, rather than on Disney plus or Netflix. I think they find it overwhelming (as do I).
