Please say what you think. Vinted asked NDN to verify her ID, which she’s happy to do, or they won’t let her withdraw the £300 she’s made selling her stuff.

Life on disability benefits not so easy right now. Her £300 a big deal.

But she can’t do the checks - cos the only ID Vinted accepts is a passport or driver’s licence, neither of which she has as she can’t travel. All the other ID proofs - she has loads - Vinted won’t accept.

We’ve appealed to Vinted three times and they won’t budge. Mangopay, their money platform, refer us to
Vinted.

So Vinted are keeping NDN’s money. They say ‘We hope you will understand’.

YABU = I’m with Vinted.
YANBU = Shame on Vinted.

@OhmygodDont, that's why I'm in favour of government-issued ID cards. I don't understand why Brits are so opposed to them. The way things are, you are excluded from loads of things unless you fork out for a passport. Govt ID is free in most countries.

I agree there, as I’ve said I don’t drive or fly but have a prov license just for id.

Jaxhog · 06/06/2024 19:05

It isn't discrimination per-se. My 95 year old Mum still has a valid passport for id purposes, even though she isn't going abroad again.

Unfortunately, the reason that organisations are clamping down on this is because it's too easy to obtain other forms of ID that can then be used to scam people. I'm also in favour of a free UK ID card.

PS. This a lesson in why you should ALWAYS read the Ts&Cs.

Small Claims Court! It is a 35 quid fee but I garuntee you this will be sorted immediately once its with Vinted's legal department.

You 'garuntee' do you?
I hope you're not in the legal profession.

Littlebigcat · 06/06/2024 19:39

Vinted aren't keeping her money though. She has a £300 balance sat in her Vinted account that she can buy stuff with to reduce that balance down and people sell all sorts on there (as people have pointed out, you could do this). I get that she would rather have the money but it will be in the T&C's and isn't that new a thing so I'm really big sure it is that discriminatory. I think that the threshold that you can withdraw without verification is £100, or has been when I've done it in the past

wasieverreallyhere · 06/06/2024 19:40

Supersimkin2 · 05/06/2024 18:04

You can’t get a driving licence for lots of disabilities.

Why should NDN have to pay £100 for a passport she can’t use when things like freedom passes or bank letters work 100 per cent of the time everywhere else?

Had to get passport for my 80 year old aunty could not do checks for probate without it and the to sell house

gotmyknickersinatwist · 06/06/2024 19:44

Supersimkin2 · 06/06/2024 16:03

I’ve emailed Vinted with this link - might be interesting to see if they’ve got anything else to say than Gimme Passport.

@Supersimkin2 it's amazing how a bit of negative publicity can make a company change it's tune, though I'm not sure this thread will do it.

I'm thinking more like yer man from the One Show, or Gloria Hunniford & her crew, or BBC Radio 4's money matters.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 06/06/2024 19:57

Will Vinted accept one of the new voting ID cards? I think they’re free.
If not your ndn could try contacting her MP, if they are asking only for travel documents and a person can’t travel because of disability that could be construed as discriminatory. If MP not possible due to election try Citizens Advice.
@Littlebigcat wrote “ I think that the threshold that you can withdraw without verification is £100, or has been when I've done it in the past”
Could your ndn withdraw £100 each week for 3 weeks?

Vistada · 06/06/2024 20:04

100 for a passport to claim.300 quid means 200 profit still plus 100% of future earnings with none of this noise. Just get one!

66% of 300 is better than 100% of FA. This is just basic business sense.

It's also just good sense for her to get a passport. It's incredibly unwise to not have a single form of ID in this day and age

This has nothing to do with your NDN being disabled, and everything to.do with her being downright bloody minded.

WalkingonWheels · 06/06/2024 20:14

Serrina · 06/06/2024 16:59

I think the issue the OP is raising is that in question is physically unable to work or travel. It seems to me (although the disability hasn't been disclosed) that this particular person is completely housebound. They're physically unable to drive, so a provisional driving licence is out of the question and they aren't able to travel to the in person interview for a passport. I didn't realise this was necessary for a first adult passport, it wasn't when I applied for mine, but apparently it is now. So its quite a tricky situation.

I'm completely housebound too. I still have a passport and driving licence.

This is not disability discrimation. We are perfectly capable of getting photographic ID.

Edited

The new voting ID is not a card, it's a piece of paper, so cannot be used as official ID other than for voting.

Why does being disabled atop you getting photo id, a passport application is all online. Just needs someone to help with the photo or just go somewhere fir passport photos

Bowies · 06/06/2024 20:39

A passport is a fairly standard requirement for many ID checks, it’s normal to hold one for this purpose even if you never intend to travel

You don't even need that now. I had to reapply for mine a few weeks ago and a selfie on a light background was accepted as my photo.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you go about getting it? Just hoping maybe the OP might be able to advise her neighbour on how to go about this.

FindingNeverland28 · 06/06/2024 20:56

I’ve just sold a lot of stuff on Vinted (about £150 worth) and I don’t recall having to verify my ID. Perhaps it needs be below a certain amount. Is there anything on there she’d like to buy, as that is deducted from her balance.

GeneralPeter · 06/06/2024 21:56

Why not post on Legal, or the Disabilities board.

You will get much more useful responses there.

This feels like it's at least arguable as indirect discrimination against a protected characteristic under the Equality Act, by failure to make a reasonable adjustment. But I'm not a lawyer (which is why you should ask some MNers who are!). T&Cs are not the final word.

NDN will need ID when voting on 4 July so what will she do then? #missespointofthread

Blue Badges and Now cards are both acceptable forms of photo ID at polling stations.

I’m disabled 😊

Why are you being such a rude knob? Ironically I actually am but also trying to help???

Pliudev · 06/06/2024 23:06

The title of your question is misleading. This has nothing to do with disability. If I was disabled (and I I'm) I think I'd be a bit cross that you seem to be implying disabled people haven't got id.

Efrogwraig · 06/06/2024 23:24

On 5th July contact your MP and ask them to take up the case.
Or get a national paper to take it up.

AllTipAndNoIceberg · 06/06/2024 23:29

Or just help your NDN get a passport organised

DexaVooveQhodu · 06/06/2024 23:41

I originally voted yanbu from reading the op but have changed my vote to yabu.

She is not being penalised for being disabled. She is being penalised for not reading the Ts&Cs just clicked to check and it is very clear:

You can provide one of the following documents:

  • Your passport
  • Your driver’s licence (provisional licence is suitable too)

That's the whole list.

But yes as pp suggested all that needs to happen is that you/someone else she trusts who has photo ID creates an account and proves ID, then "sells" her £300 of something which she can pay for from her vinted wallet. Cash then withdrawn (minus a small commission). Job done. Lesson learned.

Jack80 · 07/06/2024 07:57

Sounds like she will come across an ID problem a lot in like. I would just apply for a provisional driving license so she has some ID.

parkrun500club · 07/06/2024 07:59

SausageRoll2020 · 05/06/2024 17:55

If this was in the terms and conditions when she signed up for Vinted/Mangopay then it's her own fault.

If it wasn't then she has a valid complaint.

Most of us probably just tick to say we've read the t's and C's without actually doing so but this is the risk.

Consumer terms have to be fair. Are these fair? I don't think so. So they are not enforceable.

And yes you need ID to vote, but it doesn't sound like Vinted would accept the cheap ID card you can get to vote, and I think you can use certain other forms of ID anyway, it doesn't have to be a passport or driving licence.

Wobblebumbelly · 07/06/2024 09:01

Their T& C's may say passport or driving licence but I'd suggest Ndn send the following link to them. This is guidance from the government about what is acceptable."Proof of identity checklist - GOV.UK" https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/proof-of-identity-checklist/proof-of-identity-checklist

It's pretty disgusting that they aren't using their Initiative on this one. I think if you go to citizens advice they may be able to provide a template letter that you could send. Or maybe send it to Martin Lewis and let him embarrass them!
