let's see how that works.

This thread is a bit confusing to follow.

Half the people in favour of Labour's policy want private schools to close down, while the other half feel very strongly parents with kids in private school must keep them there and 'suck it up'

Bruciebogtrotter · 05/06/2024 18:02

I don’t really know what point you’re making OP. You can apply and you’ll get allocated an undersubscribed (ie likely to be shit) school. Places have already been allocated for this year. I think the number of parents pulling kids out of private for state will be small. All the good schools are already full so unless it’s year 6 moving to year 7 it won’t make a difference how close to the school people can afford to move - they won’t be kicking out the kids who already have places so you’ll get what’s left over.

QueenCamilla · 05/06/2024 18:02

Plenty of school spaces in these parts.
Only thing to worry about is no room for all the big-dick Range rovers.

Treacletoots · 05/06/2024 18:04

It's 20% not 200%

If people cant afford a minor uptick then they probably couldn't really afford it ever

We are just saying they are all homeschooled. No one keeps a record so no one will know. So they will be obliged to find them a place. 😒A few people have already done it to test it out - was easy…and were told there were no places at the moment.

Not if they're electively homeschooled, they don't. Oh, and your private school is obliged to notify the LA of the details of any child on their roll (and any who leave). So they know where they are already.

Bit like your mortgage eh? And your gas and electricity. And that Sainsburys shop! Look at the fuss over Cost of Living and that was nowhere near a 20% increase. I guess the whole country is just a mass of people living on the edge....

GOTBrienne · 05/06/2024 18:09

This isn’t just the reason that people can’t afford fees though - cost of living, Brexit, poor wages, high mortgage costs, high energy bills.
If these weren’t an issue schools would be absorbing these costs much easier and parents would be able to afford them more.

Theres plenty of school places where I live, you just won’t want them. Lots of parents when they see what is available will find the money, which I suspect why a lot of them are in PE in the first place.

Escothesia · 05/06/2024 18:10

The appeals process is largely bullshit. I would not rely on that.
Its just 3 random people (who have no understanding of sen) or the local schools.
We lost our appeal and so dd missed the transition days she needed. Eventually got a place by sept.

However i would say unfortunately that even the oversuscribed school is pretty rubbish
They dont marl any homework or if they did no marks are fed back.
Suck up the 20% it will be worth it.
The behaviour is a serious issue too, kids sent out of almost every class......

Imagine my surprise at the likes of you & your ilk manipulating the system at the expense of others. I really had hoped you were a troll but as someone has pointed out, you're actually real.

How utterly depressing

Araminta1003 · 05/06/2024 18:16

Much more urgent than the private school question in this country right now is University Education. The FT just ran a piece and our scores are down, international students are no longer coming, we are going to be screwed. The Labour Party will have to sort that one out first! It will have to take priority over private schools or they are essentially negligent.

Treacletoots · 05/06/2024 18:17

,,@GogoGobo

Private school fees are a luxury. Not a necessity.

You can't compare an essential bill like food or energy to private school fees.

Comparing this to the miner's strike is so deranged that I actually want this policy go ahead just so I can see what madness ensues.

Is there a German word for this? Can someone's privately educated child tell me?

Given they are two different systems, you would hope the government could do both.

But yes the university system is something that needs a lot of attention.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/06/2024 15:35

No she’s not, she said every single parent. She’s just being an arse.
Anyone who can no longer afford the fees and needs a place in a state school is completely reasonable to apply for one. Anyone applying for a place their child doesn’t need because they are aggrieved about the removal of a tax break would be a twat.

Those twats are paying for a state school place too so are entitled to apply for one just in case. It’ll be a good stress test for all the private school abolitionists.

Dryplate · 05/06/2024 18:22

It would only make a difference to "them" if you actually take the places. Otherwise the only thing you'll achieve is a whole load of stress for families on waiting lists, who will eventually get the place they wanted anyway. Nice.

Namechangey23 · 05/06/2024 18:22

edwinbear · 05/06/2024 15:35

It's happening already and local authorities are warning there are not enough spaces.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/05/27/private-school-parents-escape-labour-vat-state-places/

My understanding is that once displaced kids have been out of school for 4 weeks, the Fair Access Protocol kicks in. It will be an administrative nightmare for LA's and state schools, but these kids, many of whom will be in year transfers, are entitled to a state school place. Plus transport if the school is too far away.

Well of course the Toryagraph, there is an absolutely unbiased resource for you.. excellent research you've really gone outside your comfort zone there to dig out the most credible research good job haha.

Strictly1 · 05/06/2024 18:24

As a HT I know that lots of schools are not full so it would not cause the problems you hope.

You have a lot more faith in the political landscape than I do if you think the shoulds are prioritised over the popular.

Mum1976Mum · 05/06/2024 18:24

Oh I will be sucking it up and paying the extra 20% - by changing all our business arrangements so that we can legally pay as little tax as possible. We’ve always paid full whack as we felt it was morally the right thing to do…but no more! A bit of paperwork and we can save about 10k of tax a year. We will be paying the absolute minimum going forward..in fact, I will be decreasing my working hours and upping my pension pot to take me just under the threshold. 😃 I will screw the state for every last Penny I can!

Araminta1003 · 05/06/2024 18:25

The trouble is you need to be careful not to mislead those who genuinely might need a state school place. Because once the Council has offered you a place, their duty is discharged! I am assuming at least for one academic year.

Summerfreezemakesmedrinkwine · 05/06/2024 18:29

TheaBrandt · 05/06/2024 18:32

Honestly nobody likes tax can sympathise had a horrific bill In January felt sick paying it. But your attitude is weird and frankly unhinged.
