let's see how that works.

Sure, great. The state absolutely should provide an education for your child.

LunaBunaD · 05/06/2024 15:18

Well with over 1 million unfilled school places, and only half a million in private education I am sure they'd find a way to make it work. It might mean some families having to move because the space they have been offered is too far away, so I'm not sure it would hurt the people you want it to.....

noblegiraffe · 05/06/2024 15:21

You’d be put on a waiting list until a space became free.

makeanddo · 05/06/2024 15:21

Well they can and they would get a place, it's unlikely however to be at the school of their choice.

My DC went to private school, if they were now moving to secondary now they would be going state with tutoring etc top ups.

I hope people understand that when you apply to go to state you don't necessarily get offered your local school that could be full. Even if you go on the wait list you could still miss out if someone who lives nearer than you applies. It is not done in application order.

Luxell934 · 05/06/2024 15:23

Well I’d definitely recommend getting your child on a wait list if you know the fees going up will be unaffordable for you.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/06/2024 15:24

Sorry what, you want to cause administrative chaos which will leave the children of parents who CAN afford the private school VAT increase unscathed while causing trouble for everyone needing a new place at a state school, including those forced to leave private?

🤔

skippy67 · 05/06/2024 15:25

sarjd · 05/06/2024 15:12

let's see how that works.

Why would they do that if they can afford not to?
That'd be a bit weird...

I think what she's saying is that she's made a decision for her family that is no longer financially sustainable, so now she expects the state to fix it at no inconvenience to her.

We all know how MN loves that attitude.

This. Unless you're just being horrible. Your OP isn't clear on that point.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 05/06/2024 15:28

what why - i can afford the VAT, so can many other parents........ your post is weird OP

mitogoshi · 05/06/2024 15:28

There's plenty of places, they even are talking about closing a school here! You just will get what's available. Your point is? You are entitled to a state place

noblegiraffe · 05/06/2024 15:29

In year transfers don’t work the same way as normal applications. The OP is a bit confused.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 05/06/2024 15:30

Private school parents who give notice today, are contracted to pay fees until the end of the autumn term. Once you are given a state place, they will only hold it for weeks and not months.

SpringKitten · 05/06/2024 15:30

Well you’ve missed the boat for the allocation of places this year so unfortunately you’d be stuck on a wait list and offered a place miles away most likely. So it might be a really long journey for your child (which I guess the LA can help pay for, but I wouldn’t want my primary aged kids ripped away from friends and sent to a school 45 mins drive away).

My local primary hardly has any kids in it, as they built it for a population bulge that hasn’t happened. They would LOVE to fill their classrooms! Secondary is much harder, but I know kids who travel for about 90mins each way on a bus/train/walk combo, so you should be fine.

PuttingDownRoots · 05/06/2024 15:32

My local Primary and Secondary have vacancies in many years groups. I'm sure the extra few who live in catchment that go Private currently won't cause an issue.

NeverHadHaveHas · 05/06/2024 15:33

Our local authority has already confirmed that it currently has no school places in year 10.

There will definitely be people who leave or dc’s school and I’m not sure where they are meant to go.

DustyD2 · 05/06/2024 15:34

And take a place of someone who genuinely needs it and cause them even more stress and worry, just so you can prove a point?

edwinbear · 05/06/2024 15:35

It's happening already and local authorities are warning there are not enough spaces.

My understanding is that once displaced kids have been out of school for 4 weeks, the Fair Access Protocol kicks in. It will be an administrative nightmare for LA's and state schools, but these kids, many of whom will be in year transfers, are entitled to a state school place. Plus transport if the school is too far away.

noblegiraffe · 05/06/2024 15:35

I’m assuming it won’t take anyone’s place because the OP has no intention of actually taking up the place.

Edited

No she’s not, she said every single parent. She’s just being an arse.
Anyone who can no longer afford the fees and needs a place in a state school is completely reasonable to apply for one. Anyone applying for a place their child doesn’t need because they are aggrieved about the removal of a tax break would be a twat.

Aladdinzane · 05/06/2024 15:38

Aww, some private school parents have REALLY been making themselves look good on here ( note not all).

ginasevern · 05/06/2024 15:38

OP - grow up.

CelesteCunningham · 05/06/2024 15:13

Sure, great. The state absolutely should provide an education for your child.

Why shouldn't the state??

DorisDoesDoncaster · 05/06/2024 15:39

Surely it’s just easier to petition your private school to stop giving out free or subsidized places. Such schools should also start charging the state schools for any use of their facilities and grounds etc, instead of giving it away for free.

This should help to bring the cost down so that you only have to pay for your own child to attend. The VAT will then be levied on a lower cost per child.

I know millionaires who have claimed hardship and managed to get 50% off their child’s fees - the other parents end up paying for the millionaire’s child. Disgraceful.

noblegiraffe · 05/06/2024 15:40

My understanding is that once displaced kids have been out of school for 4 weeks, the Fair Access Protocol kicks in. It will be an administrative nightmare for LA's and state schools, but these kids, many of whom will be in year transfers, are entitled to a state school place

Not, however, in the school of their choice. Many pupils don’t get their first choice, or even any of their choices and get allocated somewhere they didn’t want.

So the OP is apparently asking all private school parents to remove them from a school they have paid for and are happy with to sit on their bums for a month then be allocated a place at St Trinians 2 bus rides away.
