This is a campaign by parent groups.

Only 1 parent group, the Edinburgh group.

The main parent group are not involved in this campaign and don't endorse it.

Joob · 05/06/2024 16:01

A mum at our school has actually suggested other parents do this (unconnected to whether they want a place) to “send a message”. I mean, she’s suggested it under her own name and everything 😭. Completely shameless.

Private school parents (I’m one) really need to wake up to the fact that this is a popular policy. Sabotaging the state application system is not going to help your cause. Better to work with your school to bring the change in with minimum disruption.

Surely it’s just easier to petition your private school to stop giving out free or subsidized places. Such schools should also start charging the state schools for any use of their facilities and grounds etc, instead of giving it away for free.

This should help to bring the cost down so that you only have to pay for your own child to attend. The VAT will then be levied on a lower cost per child.

I know millionaires who have claimed hardship and managed to get 50% off their child’s fees - the other parents end up paying for the millionaire’s child. Disgraceful.

It's always the ones who can afford it no problem who are the tightest cunts going🙄

WhyIOughtTo · 05/06/2024 16:02

Well, how it works out is, if there’s a place available you’ll get it. And if there isn’t a place available, you won’t get it. Quite straightforward really.

Exactly. It will take ninety seconds to find out if there is a space.

There is loads of space at my DD's secondary school and the one in the next suburb.

It’s not that straightforward when the appeals process is taken into account. Parents can appeal for a place if they’re not happy with the allocated school.

savoycabbage · 05/06/2024 16:05

They've been told after 4 weeks they become eligible under FAP which changes admission rules and spaces have to be found somewhere, even in full schools.

That can be anywhere though. It's something like 75 minutes on public transport and you get a free bus pass. I looked in to Fair Access Protocol when I was doing my DD's appeal.

UrbanFan · 05/06/2024 16:06

This is one thing I actually agree with Stammy about. Private school fees should be VAT rated. It's a choice to send your child to a private school not something you must do. Suck it up and pay the VAT if they manage to get into power. Or get the school to reconsider their fees.

I think other areas are experiencing it as well. For example,

Cambridgeshire : “We are currently receiving high levels of In Year applications”

Yes, but it's a meeting where a lawyer advocates on behalf of the LA, and you have three adjudicators to listen to you make your appeal. It can take quite a long time to get all this in place and that's before you imagine all these protest appeals clogging up the system. And many appeals aren't successful.

It shows quite some contempt for the state school system to hijack it like this. When among the mix are children who don't have a back-up private school place waiting in the wings.

Yes, of course you can. You apply, if there is no place you can appeal. You win or you lose. Then you apply somewhere else if you lose.

It's not overly complicated.

I don't think it will cause widespread chaos.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 05/06/2024 16:09

Is this like the “everyone don’t play the elect bill” crap.

honestly get over yourselves like you do everyone else a favour. I’ll remember to thank the first class flyers next time I pass them on the way to economy.

@noblegiraffe I get that displaced kids won't have a choice in where they go, they will have to go where they are offered, but the parents at DC's school who are currently applying for in year transfers for state are being told there are no spaces in our area and panicking that they won't actually have a school place anywhere. They've been told after 4 weeks they become eligible under FAP which changes admission rules and spaces have to be found somewhere, even in full schools.

FAP? There is a system called FAP?!!

How did someone not go 'what's the acronym for this new system? It's...it...I'm sorry, did you just say FAP? ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR GODDAMN MIND?!'

HandaFae · 05/06/2024 16:11

Yes please!

My LA have at least 66% of its schools with spare places against their PAN ( pupil admission number).

The same LA has agreed to the closure of 16 unsustainable schools in the last five and a half years. Closures requested by the governing board, due to low numbers making the schools unviable financially and therefore in the quality of education able to be offered.

More children would be a massive benefit.

pocketheart · 05/06/2024 16:11

Please do op!
There are so many unfilled school places, your little darling/darlings would be very welcome to fill them.

My school (in a crime filled, deprived area of an inner city) isn't full but let me guess, you don't think any privately educated child deserves to go to such a school?

I personally cannot wait for Labour to get in.

Bullsey · 05/06/2024 16:12

twistyizzy · 05/06/2024 15:45

Bollocks.
Do you actually know any private parents and their financial situation.
VAT is the tipping point for many.
You have swallowed Labour's attack the wealthy mantra.

What annual salary do you consider to be wealthy?

If you can afford the luxury of private school, you're wealthy. That's one definition of wealthy.

I don't care if the VAT rise means some parents won't be able to afford to keep their kids at private school. Children move schools all the time for all sorts of reasons. They'll survive.

Some private school parents will genuinely need to consider switching and should be aware that there is an appeals process. They don’t have to just accept what they’re given, despite what some posters are suggesting.

noblegiraffe · 05/06/2024 16:13

These parents are actually going to take their kids out of school for no reason other than to show Keir Starmer that they don’t like his policy?

What a bunch of dildos. Their poor kids.

Right. I'm not sure these children would be well supported by other people pretending that they need a place, when their only motive it to disrupt the system in protest.

WannabeMathematician · 05/06/2024 16:14

Is this some sort of civil protest?

Solihullproject · 05/06/2024 16:15

Yes, Labour will get in, they will pass this policy in, it’s one of their very few paltry revenue raisers, so if you think you can’t afford a 15 percent plus fee hike, you’d be mad not to apply for a place.

twistyizzy · 05/06/2024 16:16

How about parents who don't pay the fees ie military families and those on bursaries?

Isn't it doing that kind of thing that allows private schools to achieve charitable status though? I presume there'd be a whole lot more additional tax to pay if a school with charitable status lost it and I imagine that would be passed on to the parents.
Call me a cynic, but I doubt many private schools allow community use of their facilities at discounted or no charge just out of the goodness of their hearts.

Ilovemycatalot · 05/06/2024 16:17

My heart bleeds for the parents that might have to take their little angels out of private school and join the peasants in a state school.

But no private school parents will be weighing up literally feeding themselves vs paying the VAT on their kids private education.

It's phenomenally difficult to have any sympathy with those having shitfits - pretending they'll be sending their kids to a school that's absolutely full of children who aren't fed or even clothed properly.

It reeks of contempt & privilege

Except the impact is on the kids not the parents.
How progressive, a country that taxes education but has gambling as tax exempt.
