let's see how that works.

Except VAT isn't a luxury tax. Frozen yoghurt is VAT exempt but ice cream isn't. Gambling isn't taxed under VAT so is that a basic necessity?

We are one of the only countries to be considering taxing education. Hardly progressive is it?

Progressive taxation involves taxes increasing as income increases.

So taxing private school fees can absolutely be viewed as a progressive policy, since it's a progressive tax.

Bullsey · 05/06/2024 16:56

They should just ban private schools if they’re that awful and unfair to society.

Great idea. I would vote for that too.

Bullsey · 05/06/2024 16:57

Kpo58 · 05/06/2024 16:50

It redressess nothing of the sort. All that will happen is that it pushes up the prices of housing around already good state schools and will make private tutors busy.

Still not a good enough reason not to do it.

Araminta1003 · 05/06/2024 17:00

Why don’t you all get together and set up a large state boarding school to be opened in September and then you can all send your DCs there? Get one of the rich parents to donate the site and get going etc.

Dryplate · 05/06/2024 17:03

Loads of empty places in schools in our deprived London Borough, mainly because the upwardly mobile incomers send DC private. They'll be grand.

Screamingabdabz · 05/06/2024 17:05

Not enough that you want to buy privilege for your little precious darlings but you think you’re doing the state school riff raff a favour too… The sheer fucking entitlement and lack of self awareness in these private school
numpty threads is jaw dropping.

"It happens with a few subjects on here. I've a special interest in a health matter & whenever a negative story/dodgy research is under embargo there will be one or two threads here in the days prior to it lifting. Every, single, time."

Really? I'm fascinated by this!

Kinda fascinating but also really depressing on this particular health matter, though. But given the industries involved it's also not remotely surprising & they've got form over many decades.

But places like this (reddit & twitter too) are ideal for priming & then data mining.

TheDefiant · 05/06/2024 17:24

Great idea! There are many, many schools with spaces and funding is allocated to the school per pupil.

Fill those spaces up = more funding!

Win win.

Stereotype alert!🚨

Pupils are likely to be better behaved and well motivated with engaged and encouraging parents - this can only help the school improve.

In fact does one of the Scandi nations not ban private schools as this means parents are then motivated to demand better for their children?

I think you are onto a winner OP! Best of luck.

cansu · 05/06/2024 17:26

I think that if you can't afford to pay the increased costs then yes you should definitely apply as you may have to get on a waiting list. However most of these parents won't because they have no intention of moving their kids into the state system. If you are suggesting paying for a place that you don't want to try and make some point then no that would be stupid and akin to me turning up in A and E pretending to be ill. Seriously get a grip!

itsgettingweird · 05/06/2024 17:28

Yes. Why don't all the parents who can afford independent education leave and go to state schools.

Then you can help those of us who relied on state education to rally for it to be better.

You can point out that not everyone can afford it "if they just work harder".

I would bet that if private school parents had to rely on what the state has (n't) provided the past 14 years they'd soon have something more to say on the subject.

SpudleyLass · 05/06/2024 17:30

CelesteCunningham · 05/06/2024 15:13

Sure, great. The state absolutely should provide an education for your child.

Unleas your child has substantial special needs, in which case they'll find every reason under the sun not to.

Aladdinzane · 05/06/2024 15:38

Aww, some private school parents have REALLY been making themselves look good on here ( note not all).

I agree it’s really shocking and really really makes me 😡. The entitlement .
I hope with a new fairer govt society changes and these attitudes are even more minority. Just appalling.

This is my view. There is no place for private education in a decent country

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 05/06/2024 17:36

There's loads of spaces - just not at schools you will fancy.

Mum1976Mum · 05/06/2024 17:41

Nobody gives a jot about private school children having to leave their school due to the politics of envy…so I don’t care about disrupting the state system. At least 100 of us at our private school are going to apply for places we don’t need and won’t take just to prove a point! There are no spaces in our county or the neighbouring one so it will cause chaos! And I hope everyone at private does it!

Notonthestairs · 05/06/2024 17:42

There are no school places in your county? Which county is this?

LeftLegRightLeg · 05/06/2024 17:45

Throwing your toys out of your pram never did get anyone far @Mum1976Mum 🙄 Except now you should be old enough to know that really and maintain some dignity perhaps?

Mum1976Mum · 05/06/2024 17:45

Nope! I’ve had enough of playing fair! If everyone is so gleeful about making life harder for me then I’ll happily make it harder for others!

But you’re disrupting the system for the students having to move into it from private, so clearly you don’t care about those students.

Mum1976Mum · 05/06/2024 17:47

No point me caring about them if no one else does! Sometimes, as with the strikes, life has to be made harder for people to make a point. And education should never be taxed. Hopefully, there will be a legal challenge anyway which will stop it in its tracks.

What a lovely person you are.

and this is exactly why I would never send my dc private , even if I was rolling in it. I would hate for them to mix in such circles

You do realise how you sound here right?

BifferThat · 05/06/2024 17:50

Done and moved.

GogoGobo · 05/06/2024 17:50

I'd rather get a bank loan to pay the vat than switch my DC to a state school.

Notonthestairs · 05/06/2024 17:50

I'm more intrigued to know which county has zero school places.
