How many bulges will be there be for a school of a thousand closing..

Isn’t the other issue teachers, ie not having enough

If too many students move no extra funding for more - if they are available

But you can’t send 5 years olds NATIONWIDE can you!!

Edited

They won't need to send them nationwide, but they absolutely can (and do) send them to neighbouring towns.

Not neighbouring counties though so many areas are going to be in real trouble!!!

GOTBrienne · 05/06/2024 19:00

I worked for a MAT and when the LA was worried about school places especially on one side of town, they asked them to set one up.
They are actually building a new school for it, but in the meantime the school was set up in an empty office block and they just bused the kids to another site for PE and chemistry lessons.

Complaining there are no spaces in your area doesn’t mean there isn’t a solution. If there is student money to be had there are plenty of Education Trusts happy to set something up fairly easily!

Oh get a grip. The child population is dropping everywhere- we’re having less children.
3 infant/jr schools in our not very big city are merging in Sept from 6 to 3. 8 main Secondaries and 5 have places - 3 of them LOTS of places.

As a HT I know that lots of schools are not full so it would not cause the problems you hope.

It's interesting as people seem to have this odd notion that all schools are full. It's the first thing you hear when it's proposed to increase housing in an area 'well they'll have to build a new school'. Had it in my town recently. Everyone fretting about school place numbers when the reality is that there are plenty. There's a scramble for a few good schools in any one area which gives a false impression.

Yes they can, if they need to. I'm not aware of any LA that has no spaces at all and the PPs who insist they exist are unable or unwilling to name them.

Summerdays24 · 05/06/2024 19:02

the immigration stats are going to blow through the roof IF Labour get in. So we are going to have a MAJOR problem whether you like it or not.

I don’t care how I sound anymore. I am sick of people being so gleeful about all of this when it is children who are going to be so disrupted. I have honestly had enough of society now and will be solely looking after my own from now on!

A very small number of very privileged children might have to maybe move schools. Let's get it in perspective.

noblegiraffe · 05/06/2024 19:03

Birth dates are dropping so there are loads of places for 5 year olds in primary schools. Current political discussions are about whether to decrease total school funding to account for it. So an extra influx of 5 year olds into the school system would be welcomed by schools.

Nope, five year olds will not be doing a 100 mile round trips daily STOP lying,

Zwicky · 05/06/2024 19:03

You don’t have to. There is not a single LA that doesn’t have capacity in over half of its schools. Not a single county is “full”. Not one. Nationally, 82% of schools have spaces. Regionally at least 50% do.

If they were full, which they aren’t, the LA would introduce a bulge class, like they’ve been doing for decades. 93% of children are educated in the state sector. People move schools all the time. This is not the big deal you are making it out to be.

Well this policy has earned labour my vote 😃

I think it's a great first tiny step to redressing some of the worst inequality in society - in that the richest people not only have the most, but they enact laws and rules that enable them to keep as much money and privilege to themselves. All we are talking about is adding VAT to a luxury product. But because a private education is the sole preserve of the rich, we are all supposed to be running round crying "won't someone think of the children!"

It's about time that we started looking to the other end of the spectrum instead of the government's benefit bashing and plunging more children into poverty. Im looking forward to casting my vote for a party that cares about supporting poorer people instead of preserving tax breaks for the rich.

but it’s weird. I consider people who have More than 2 children to be rich! I could not afford to have more than 2 children so I consider anyone who was able to have that privilege to be rich. If some has chosen to only have 1 child and send it private it probably costs a whole lot less than raising more than 2 children over the course of their life. I find the whole fixation with people choosing to send their children private (thus saving the state money) makes them richer than someone who sends their children state but spends their money on holidays or bigger houses or more children.

Surely it’s just easier to petition your private school to stop giving out free or subsidized places. Such schools should also start charging the state schools for any use of their facilities and grounds etc, instead of giving it away for free.

This should help to bring the cost down so that you only have to pay for your own child to attend. The VAT will then be levied on a lower cost per child.

I know millionaires who have claimed hardship and managed to get 50% off their child’s fees - the other parents end up paying for the millionaire’s child. Disgraceful.

Yep.
Ours ( old schools ) have stopped higher bursaries and all free places.
Pulled back on swimming pool, sports grounds, music lessons, theatre use etc etc of the state system to cut extras to the bone.

QuillBill · 05/06/2024 19:05

Summerdays24 · 05/06/2024 19:05

crumblingschools · 05/06/2024 19:05

Falling birth rate is mainly hitting Primaries at the moment. Many of our secondaries have bulge classes, so vacancies may not be available for some year groups.

And remember state school funding is lagged so it will be at least 12 months before schools get any money for these additional pupils

Dryplate · 05/06/2024 19:06

ONLY 18% OF SCHOOLS ARE FULL. It's really not the problem many here seem to think it is. Yes, the ones you might have chosen as an alternative to private might be full, but there are plenty of places and that number is increasing.

Many of those schools would be delighted to take some former private school students, to boost their numbers and their funding and keep them open.

Summerdays24 · 05/06/2024 19:07

What will heads do when faced with an extra 1000 - 1500 unfunded pupils or more? Does anyone know? I don’t suppose it’s ever happened before.
