Would you go out with hairy legs?

Winniethepoohisactuallyquitedeep · 05/06/2024 15:04

In shorts/skirt/dress?

I think I’ve reached a new low.
Since having my Dd I’ve had less time to
spend on myself as I previously did and I’m
less bothered. The other day it was hot, I was short of time and went out in shorts…with hairy legs. I’m a brunette so have quite dark, hairy legs, part of me thought eurgh, but then, ahh cba

It’s body hair. It’s natural, we all have it and it’s nothing to be ashamed or disgusted by.

Its a persons personal choice if they would like to remove or minimise it however each to their own.

We have been conditioned to think women should be bald from the eyebrows down.

Q124 · 05/06/2024 16:51

No never.

MartinsSpareCalculator · 05/06/2024 16:53

No. I'm not bothered what other people think, I just don't like it.

Precipice · 05/06/2024 16:56

I wonder if those that would have lighter/ blonder hair.

I have dark brown hair and pale skin (including in the summer as I lather on the SPF50). I also have a hormonal imbalance, which as well as giving me many chin hairs now (these I do remove), has lengthened my leg hair. Some of my leg hairs are over 3cm long. I assure you that they are visible.

I haven't shaved my legs since I was 12 years old and I'm not going to start now. I'm against doing so both politically and personally. I don't want bald legs. I would prefer to have the level of leg hair I used to have back when I didn't get chin hairs or only got the odd two or three. But I haven't reached the level of trimming my leg hair with clippers!

Boomer55 · 05/06/2024 17:01

I wouldn’t, but each to their own.🙂

Funnywonder · 05/06/2024 17:11

No. But my legs are a sight, covered in spider veins, and the hairiness just adds an extra dollop of self consciousness to the mix. SIL has never shaved her legs in her life and I only know this because she told me! She said she has had some really negative comments from other women, but she couldn't give a shiny one.

piningforautumn · 05/06/2024 17:24

Like so many others on here, I don't care what others do, but my dark leg hair feels very noticable to me, so I'd probably be too self-conscious, except in an emergency. It's stupid social conditioning, but it's hard to shake. (Also, it doesn't take me long to do in the shower, so usually easy enough... but I'd let it slide if I were ill, exhausted, or had no time.)

Soubriquet · 05/06/2024 17:24

Yes. Body hair doesn’t bother me at all

Cuwins · 05/06/2024 17:50

I have taken my DD for her swimming lesson (I'm in the pool) without because I forgot but I did feel self conscious when I realised.
However reading this thread has made me think that maybe people wouldn't notice as much as I think so made me feel better.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/06/2024 17:53

Can't remember when I last shaved my legs. I'm going swimming shortly and I couldnt care less who's staring at my hairy legs on the beach. Although it's so flipping cold today I'm not sure there will be anyone on the beach!

Howtonamechange · 05/06/2024 16:47

Absolutely not I wouldn't.

I wonder if those that would have lighter/ blonder hair.

I personally have thick dark hair and for me I would feel way too self conscious to do so but good for you if it doesn't bother you.

Also to me, armpit hair is a definite no no even on men.

I haven't done any actual research about it, but I can't say I have ever noticed a man without armpit hair?

On one I fancy, I like it. On one I don't fancy, I just don't want to be anywhere that area anyway.

I do find men with shaved legs weird - it's usually sport related, and not a turn off, but I just find it a bit odd looking. Not that I would every say anything, they are usually pretty fit anyway!

weegiemum · 05/06/2024 17:57

I don't shave. But I don't wear shorts or short skirts/dresses either!

People would be too busy looking at the extensive scarring on my legs to notice the hair, which doesn't grow over the scars anyway!

Wishingitwaswinter · 05/06/2024 18:21

No. But I'm the type that won't even jave hairy legs in the house. I can't stand the feeling of it, it makes me feel unclean and I have an illness so I fel like I have to be ready to the point if I need to gonto hospital, I'm clean or if I need to ozone an ambulance, they arnt going to find someone who's not washed with hair legs.

Wexone · 05/06/2024 18:26

I wouldn't - for me i hate my body hair, its long dark and gorilla like. i actually didn't shave as it made my skin feel horrible, i used hair removing cream then moved to waxing. I have had it lasered off now and i love that there is not hair any more. My armpit hair made me smelly and uncomfortable so i waxed that off too now lasered off. In the past i would have worn trousers, tights or long skirt to hide it, not because of what other people would say but because of how it made ME feel.
But if you don't want to hsvae wax etc go right ahead

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/06/2024 18:28

Always. Life is too short to be arsed shaving.

Isitchill · 05/06/2024 18:29

No, pre laser treatment I wouldn't. I had thick dark hair, it was incredibly obvious.

positivewings · 05/06/2024 18:32

I only wear leggings or half way bottoms so no I don't shave my legs.
However I went a whole year without shaving plucking ect.
And what I found out was my skin had healed.
After a long year I shaved my armpits and legs with the razors I've always used.
And my god I was sore itchy blotchy I scratched so much I bleed.
So stopped again and got a charger shaver for my armpits it's a close shave but nothing scrapes my skin.
I only do my legs if I wear shorts not very much.

PCController2 · 05/06/2024 18:36

Absolutely not, though I don't have to worry about it now as I had laser hair removal.

I absolutely agree with a lot of the comments made above about how it is absolutely fine to, but it's just not for me.

Sapphire387 · 05/06/2024 18:42

After giving myself a massive nasty cut shaving a couple of weeks ago (now almost healed, thankfully), I am giving up shaving. My husband doesn't shave his legs, so why should I? (Just to be clear, pressure is not coming from DH - he couldn't care less!)

So I will be joining you soon, OP.

StormingNorman · 05/06/2024 18:43

No.

doublec · 05/06/2024 21:00

Lost most of my hair (inc. body hair) undergoing chemotherapy. Although I have now finished this treatment, and although the hair on my head has started to regrow, I totally forgot about the hair on my legs. Have been out several times recently with bare legs, and only noticed the other night while having a bath how long and dark my leg hair now is. I know I should probably shave it off, but just don't care enough. IIRC, last time I shaved them was last October. Before cancer, I only ever used to shave whichever bits of my legs were on show anyway!

Seriously though, if you're not bothered OP, no-one else should be either. Life's too short to worry about this kind of thing.

SammySays · 05/06/2024 21:06

I couldn’t and actually have a recurring dream that I am out in shorts and have forgotten to shave my legs. The panic in the dream is terrible whilst I try to hide my legs from view and search for a way to get a razor. Clearly I’m uptight about body hair 😂

WhySoManySocks · 05/06/2024 21:07

I wish I had the courage. But I don’t.

I went to the gym with hairy armpits though.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 05/06/2024 21:07

I don’t mind if YOU don’t, but I shave the lot.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 05/06/2024 21:15

I havent shaved my legs or armpits in 5 years now. I have very dark, thick hair and pale skin so it's very noticeable. I wear shorts and dresses out all the time and have never had anyone say anything, never noticed anyone staring etc. If you want to do it then just go for it, nothing bad will happen.
