To think staying in your pyjamas on stay at home days is minging?

A mum has just posted on one of my SM groups saying that she never gets herself or DC out of their pyjamas if they are having a day in the house. She asked if other people do the same. Loads of people have responded saying they also don't dress themselves or DC if they aren't planning on leaving the house.

AIBU to find this a bit minging? Fair enough if you're ill or as a one off, but every time you are home? Who want's to sit around all day unwashed in clothes you've had on all night? Also surely it's setting a terrible example for your children?

Maybe I'm just an old dinosaur but I think it shows a shocking lack of any standards.

Feel free to tell me I'm old and out of touch.

Could someone please post a picture as to what they class PJs? Someone said lounge suit. I don’t know what that is. I just cannot imagine snyone answering the door mid afternoon in a nightie or traditional PJs. It’s just unfathomable.

I don’t understand the people saying their normal clothes are uncomfortable. Why do you wear them then? It’s not as though we’re all being laced into corsets and wearing whale bone stays and hairy tweed. I’m wearing jeans and a tee shirt and don’t think I’d be any more comfortable in pjs. Obviously I’m not including people with illnesses and disabilities who absolutely should wear whatever is most comfortable for them.

Absolutely this. I am baffled as to why so many people seem to be buying uncomfortable clothes.

YourPinkDog · 05/06/2024 15:40

I do not wear uncomfortable clothes. I do not wear nice blouses though if I am lounging around the house. I want my smarter stuff to last as long as possible.

LumiB · 05/06/2024 15:41

Unless I'm ill an 100% not leaving home, I always get ready even if it's casual wear cos I do tend to suddenly decide to pop out to the shops.

It's not that my normal clothes are uncomfortable, it's just that other things (like pyjamas) are more comfortable.

Yeah - I can't have PJ days because it makes me feel like I'm off school ill. I just can't do it! I'm in my 30s and that's still how it makes me feel. I have to be very, very ill to not bother getting dressed.

But on the other hand, if you're the kind of person who's fine with staying in PJs, nobody's going to die, are they.

Assuming you're all clean people, wearing PJs for shock horror ONE day isn't going to harm.

I don't know how some of you would have coped growing up in the 40s/50s/60s with one bath a week shared between a family of 10.

EDIT: Also, for people going on about being in "your own filth", what the bloody hell do you do to be that filthy?!

Edited

If you live in London and use the tube etc you do get filthy. I’d say modern existence is quite filthy these days anywhere.

I don’t understand the overnight “ filth” ( generally speaking) esp for dcs.

Agree. Most of my wardrobe is dresses so when I WFH I’ll wear my pjs til lunchtime so I can stay in bed as.long as possible then shower and get dressed in my lunch break usually into leggings and a shirt

Why is there such an inability to understand doing things in moderation on mumsnet? Why is there such an overriding sense of ‘my way is always the right way’? Why is there such complete ignorance to the fact that people are different and live their lives differently? Why is there such blinkered, close mindedness on here? Some of these replies are absolutely ridiculous.

Well, I wouldn't choose it myself, because I associate it with illness (of which I've experienced rather too much in my life). But if others wish to do it, and find it relaxing, it's up to them! They're not harming anyone.

Snowpatrolling · 05/06/2024 16:29

I work long hours in a mentally tough job, on my weekends off if I have nothing planned I will stay in my pjs. My kids are older so they do what they want.
ive been feeling low lately so even getting out of bed is a win for me, why pressure myself to get dressed!
im not hurting anyone else so I don’t see the issue.

Summerdays24 · 05/06/2024 16:30

I couldn’t do it unless I was at deaths door, I shower even at deaths door. Clean , comfortable loungewear is a cosy choice for us. Always keep nightwear clean and hung up for airing, dds have fresh PJs every night anyway.

Cincin22 · 05/06/2024 16:41

I always get dressed unless im really ill. The thought of cooking or eating lunches and dinners in my pyjamas is gross to me. And then going back to bed in the same clothing ive been cooking and eating in..yuck 🤮

soberfabulous · 05/06/2024 17:10

I sleep naked. My many many pairs of pyjamas are for lounging around the house in 🤪

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 05/06/2024 17:13

ShinyPebble32 · 05/06/2024 13:43

Obviously yes it’s minging as pyjamas are essentially underwear, you wouldn’t keep the same underwear on for days (I hope).

But for me the bigger problem is not leaving the house all day, no wonder so many of us have fucked hormones. We aren’t designed to stay indoors all day, we need to get natural light in our eyes first thing and then as much as possible throughout the day. Even on our families laziest days if we don’t go for a good walk in the fresh air, we would feel like shite. The people who spend full days in pyjamas aren’t getting any fresh air or exercise, so even hygiene aside it’s just wrong from a heath point of view.

Of course it’s up to people what they do, but they aren’t doing themselves or their DC’s health any favours living like that.

Missing out on those for ONE day is not going to kill anyone or even have the smallest effect on their health.

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 05/06/2024 17:17

I wonder how many of these people that have to leave the house every day, be productive, up by 8, get dressed etc. are exhausted or complain about how busy they are, how tired they are , have too much on their plate and so on.

Besidetheseaside1 · 05/06/2024 17:18

No it’s not ‘minging’ 🙄 let people live ffs, if they want to sit in there house and relax from the world for 1 day without having to do their hair or makeup and just stay comfy that is totally fine and normal. It’s not depressing or bad for your mental health if it’s 1 day! We all need a break sometimes. Another competition of the most ‘clean’ it’s bloody boring.

I work shifts. Sometimes I am in pjs or dressing gown in the afternoon or evening... and I would answer the door. Is that really so unfathomable?!

Getonwitit · 05/06/2024 17:23

Well i am sat here in pyjamas i put on this morning ( i never sleep in PJs). This morning i stripped the bed done the laundry and hung it out. Cleaned the bathroom. Made 16 jars of jam, 2 fruit pies and todays dinner. Washed the front door and scrubbed the step and swept the path. Had a shower and put on clean PJs. So not lazy and not minging. Pyjamas are like my superwoman cape, i can achieve so much more by wearing them.

Onemonkeyand3wisemen · 05/06/2024 17:24

There's nothing wrong with the odd pyjama day!

Miyagi99 · 05/06/2024 17:24

I know a lot of people that shower and then get into fresh pyjamas/ lounge wear if they know they are not leaving the house, nothing wrong with that. How do you know people are not showering?

Euromonkey · 05/06/2024 17:26

I would happily do this but for the fear that someone might come to the door in the afternoon and I'd be caught looking slovenly. I get dressed & clean my teeth by midmorning or lunchtime at the latest but will put on joggers and a jumper for comfort if I don't intend to leave the house.

FlyingHorses · 05/06/2024 17:29

Wouldn’t do it myself. Just makes me feel all greasy and eurgh. Also gives me 2018 month-long flu vibes which was not a good time for me!

Hope you are feeling better soon. If a day in your PJs makes you feel you have achieved a small victory then good on you, do what makes you feel better and to hell with everyone else 🌸🏵🌺

We don't sleep clothed but DH has lounge pants/pj bottoms that he'll wear to WFH or just potter around. So he is technically getting dressed everyday into clothes he hasn't slept in. He has sleep issues so if he has a day time nap he strips off again. We double wear clothes unless they're marked or the weather has made this impractical, so he may wear the same combo for a couple of days - but they certainly aren't worn to bed.

I have scruffy old things for round the house. I've noticed that I wear my dressing gown as a cardi over things a bit more than I'd like lately so I'm currently looking for something to wear in lieu of this. Staying in just dressing gowns here is very, very occasional and means you're knackered or sick.

Let me know if you find a suitable alternative to a dressing gown, I’m always wearing mine at home when it’s cooler!!
