Axkid car seat and not fitting

DreamyNavyMentor · 04/06/2024 20:08

I purchased an Axkid car seat from a retailer as they had a free seat cover. Turns out the seat cover won't fit the car as the seat doesn't fit correctly in it and my babys head is slumping forward when asleep.

The Axkid Move Kid is from 60cm and baby is 70cm and upper weight centile, so should fit him. The insert is removed at 110cm.

Surely it's not normal for the baby to not be able to have their head resting on the back on the baby seat as their natural position and, marks on legs. There is a wedge that keeps the car seat reclined but my car seats are quite upright.

Aibu in thinking this car seat isn't fit for purpose if the head is slumping forward? It's like the head rest is too large.

Yep, both have passed the Swedish plus test which is the hardest safety test for seats 😊

Thank you. And the smallest rear facing in terms of space?

Gosh he's so tiny he looks really uncomfortable in that big seat. Keep him in his baby seat for way longer! 5cm is ages. Put the axkid in a big plastic bag in the loft til you need it.

What if he doesn't want fit into it in a few months?

Keep it in the loft til he does 🤷‍♀️ if it's wrapped up it'll be fine for ages up there. You seem a bit over anxious about this, your baby is absolutely fine, happy and comfy and safe in the maxi cosi. You've just jumped the gun a bit with a bigger seat. Wait it out and stop stressing.

Springadorable · 05/06/2024 15:58

@DreamyNavyMentor @Hinkuy don't store it in the loft - far too high a chance it will go mouldy even if wrapped and then have to be binned 🥴

How would it go mouldy entirely wrapped up? You do realise they're stored like that for sometimes years in warehouses like that.

DreamyNavyMentor · 05/06/2024 16:02

^no I just don't want to waste £380!

They should have a date stamp and he sold close to manufacturing date.

Because the warehouse will be temperature and humidity controlled, unlike lofts and garages which often have patchy insulation.

So the current seat is fine for several more months.

You need to decide if to keep this new seat until he's bigger or return it.

No one else can decide for you.

Why wouldn't it fit the car? Or him! He will definitely grow bigger 🤔

The seats are quite upright and small. The Axkid means I have to push the front seat forward and upright, basically leaving it out of action. If there is a smaller car seat but still as safe - than it would fit the car better.

Same with car seats, I've read some don't fit as well as others. Maybe it doesn't matter and when baby is long enough it's all ok.

Maybe better options out there! I felt like this was a brand that I could trust and reduced the amount of googling I had to do regarding seats.

@DreamyNavyMentor
i still think you’d be best returning it and finding somewhere local that has a selection you can try; no-one can tell you what’s the right fit, or the fit you want, online!

If you still want to rear face have a look at the Avionaut range. They do seats from birth. An independent fitter will be able to advise you on which one is best. I have a child who was off the charts for weight, he was out of his infant seat by weight well before height. I put him into an 18kg Maxi Cosi rear facing seat that was from 9 months (had reclining options) and the eldest in the Axkid Mini kid 2. Once he was close to the weight limit of that seat I moved him into the Axkid and forward faced the eldest. He was still too short in the body at 10 months for the Axkid, he was closer to 18 months I think.

I don't understand why it's advertised as 60cm seat :/

It would probably work with a child with a long torso and short legs. Unfortunately mine are both the other way long legs and no body so both had to wait a little longer to fit in the next stage car seats.

My DS was a long skinny baby (75th centile for height, 50th for weight). He fitted in a Maxi Cosi infant carrier until 15 months. Don't get hung up on why the Axxkid is advertised "from 61 cm". All the advice is to keep them in the infant carrier as long as possible, just go with that.

And ignore the manual by keeping the baby in the carrier when they exceed the weight and length?

He didn't! We moved him out when head went over the top of the seat. And he wasn't over 13kg.
