Axkid car seat and not fitting

DreamyNavyMentor · 04/06/2024 20:08

I purchased an Axkid car seat from a retailer as they had a free seat cover. Turns out the seat cover won't fit the car as the seat doesn't fit correctly in it and my babys head is slumping forward when asleep.

The Axkid Move Kid is from 60cm and baby is 70cm and upper weight centile, so should fit him. The insert is removed at 110cm.

Surely it's not normal for the baby to not be able to have their head resting on the back on the baby seat as their natural position and, marks on legs. There is a wedge that keeps the car seat reclined but my car seats are quite upright.

Aibu in thinking this car seat isn't fit for purpose if the head is slumping forward? It's like the head rest is too large.

It can happen if babies have long legs and a shorter torso. It is a great seat and with some tweaks or waiting a little bit longer for him to grow he's going to be super safe. As above, contact the seller and send photos of the fit (they'll want to see the seat tethered in the car as well as him in it) to see what can be adjusted. For reference, even babies on higher centiles are normally around nine months before they get a good fit in this seat.

Agh how annoying!

I feel like I've wasted £180 on the maxicosy very quickly... But it's convenient to go from car to wheels and not have to decant (if that's the right words)

Its my own fault as I could Google but I obviously didn't (didn't do a lot of planning when pregnant).

Top line is where the strap is coming out and bottom is where you need it to

So it's completely different the one one got as the strap is very low down compared to that pic.

I've taken a pic but it's prob not going to show much. Can the straps be adjusted as I could try that. It's like baby is sitting upright in the seat

@DreamyNavyMentor car seats are an absolute minefield. This seat will last years and keep him really safe so it's a great investment, he just needs a bit more growing first. So I'd get that extra 5cm out of your infant carrier and then try him again - will probably make all the difference. Head flop isn't a safety issue (although it's not very comfortable) after six months because they are strong enough to adjust their sleeping position themselves (provided they are sitting up unsupported normally) and their brains are developed enough to notice any decrease in air supply. But I'm totally with you on wanting to avoid it.

DreamyNavyMentor · 05/06/2024 00:03

If people are happy to hang around I could get the seat from the car? Will take 10 mins,,,,

I can't really see what's happening in this pic to be honest, it's a bit too dark and a tricky angle. Can you get a better one tomorrow?

Yes the straps can be, you have to rethread them through the seat. It's a bit of a faff (and on my to do list myself tomorrow for my toddler 🥴) but he'll definitely need them on the lowest setting so just check that they are coming out of the seat through the lowest holes. YouTube has some good tutorial videos.

Both of mine moved into the Minikid which is similar but neither were big enough for it until around 14 months. Until then they stayed in their maxi cosi infant carriers. Are you making sure babies bum is right down to the buckle in the infant carrier?

Spareincoming · 05/06/2024 00:08

Seconding @Springadorable‘s comments on the shoulder straps; I’d say he’s too small at the moment.
In his infant seat, is the headrest as high as it will go and is the top of his head 2cm below the top of the headrest? Thats the limit of the infant seat.
How old is little one? It’s fairly unusual for babies to hit the weight limit but not so unusual to hit the height limit of an infant carrier and some have smaller shells than others, joie can be short, and one of the maxi cosi is weirdly short compared to the rest of their range.

We’re a Britax brand car seat family as that’s who trained me, and we go from the infant seat to a rear facing seat suitable until age 4/20kg seat, then an extended rear facing seat (up to 35kg) usually until aged 6 (my DC are tall and need the bigger seat!) then a forward facing high back booster seat after 6.

Pin0cchio · 05/06/2024 00:10

That baby looks too young and small for that type seat.

Those seats show a wide size range but they aren't well suited in style for younger babies.

You are better off buying a more reclined group 1 seat like a maxi cosi 2 way pearl type thing. A seat like that one is better for age 2 or so plus.

Pin0cchio · 05/06/2024 00:18

Ps op it is not solely about size. Age also matters as it affects muscles & relative size of head vs body.

Those very upright style seats aren't suitable for such a young baby even if they appear to be of a length to fit.

Your baby probably needs to stay in a baby style group 0 or 1 car seat, just a larger one than the one you have.

I think I'm getting caught up on "well he's 70cm and it says 61cm min"

OP posts:
DreamyNavyMentor · 05/06/2024 00:24

Yeah I think this car seat isn't 61cm/or he's too small.

At age three than he wouldn't be using the insert as I'm sure he's 110cm by then?

110cm is 50th percentile for a 5 year old boy.

It would be an exceptionally tall child who is 110cm by 3. My DS was 95th % and I think was well under this - more like 102cm.

foxredlab101 · 05/06/2024 00:25

I would wait until he hits that 75cm then try again.

As you said correctly above we didn't transition until he was approx. 90-100cm however we moved from infant carrier to joie 360 and then to Axkid.

You've got such an amazing seat he just needs to grow slightly.

Yes, I’m afraid it looks too big!
How annoying.
If you bought it online you may be able to return it as unsuitable for purpose. But it will probably fit him very well in a few months!

DreamyNavyMentor · 05/06/2024 00:25

But more to the back story - it had a free car seat protector which I've thrown away the box to. Also I have to pay for return.

I thought I was being clever by supporting retailers but now this happens :( obviously the box is my fault but how can a 61cm child fit in this seat.

Forget his height for a minute.

How old is he?

He looks too young for this style seat.

foxredlab101 · 05/06/2024 00:27

Also how much does he weigh?

Spareincoming · 05/06/2024 00:27

@Pin0cchio I think it’s sold as suitable from 9 months onwards. Their idea of suitable and mine differ!

I'd expect a taller child to need a seat in between the infant carrier and an ERF seat like this one.

Its why there are multiple seat categories.

Group 00/0 - infant carriers
Group 1 - toddler seat - usually from anywhere between age 1 & 18m onwards
Group 2 (like the ERF seats) not really before age 2

Way, way too young for a seat like this.

He needs to be in a baby seat.
