Axkid car seat and not fitting

DreamyNavyMentor · 04/06/2024 20:08

I purchased an Axkid car seat from a retailer as they had a free seat cover. Turns out the seat cover won't fit the car as the seat doesn't fit correctly in it and my babys head is slumping forward when asleep.

The Axkid Move Kid is from 60cm and baby is 70cm and upper weight centile, so should fit him. The insert is removed at 110cm.

Surely it's not normal for the baby to not be able to have their head resting on the back on the baby seat as their natural position and, marks on legs. There is a wedge that keeps the car seat reclined but my car seats are quite upright.

Aibu in thinking this car seat isn't fit for purpose if the head is slumping forward? It's like the head rest is too large.

Honestly he's fine! They are supposed to fit snugly in the seat.

Those seats fit lots of babies until quite a lot bigger than him.

Thanks. What about the head as it's not supported as such?

He looks a very good fit in the Maxi Cosi; I’d say you’ve a good few months use left in it. I’d keep using that then reassess in the Axkid.

Ignore the forward facers, rear facing is 5 times safer until age 6! The science speaks for itself!

Pin0cchio · 05/06/2024 00:51

Yes. I told them weight and height

Yes but its also the age that matters. You would need to tell them the baby is only 6 months old so they can recommend a seat suitable for a baby rather than an older toddler.

They know the age as well. I said I had maxicosy and wanted a new one

So why are they selling this car seat to young babies!

Eh?
I think you are perhaps a bit confused about what a baby is supposed to look like in a car seat. His head is far better supported in that maxi cosi than in the big axkid.
The axkid is a great seat just put it away til christmas.

DreamyNavyMentor · 05/06/2024 00:55

Ok so my dilemma is now what do I do with the axkid?

Do I keep it or do I return it...... I have a small car with seats that are steep. and although it fits I'm a bit worried as I haven't seen any rear facing children to visualize. I know I will lose my front seat if I rear face (as in I need to push the seat forward to accommodate rear facing).

Agh. Maybe I should send back.

Who knows why - Perhaps they were confused.

Its no big deal. You have plenty of room in the baby seat, keep him in that till he's really busting out of it, by then he'll be ready for the bigger seat

There is nothing around his head to stop it from moving.

I think it's clear I'm not a car seat expert and I've had plenty of people help me on this thread.

No the website clearly states 7 months (plus or minus) and 61cm...... No way is a 61cm baby fitting in the seat

@DreamyNavyMentor
I’d return it, use the Maxi-Cosi to its absolute limit then find somewhere that you can try a few to see what works. We use a Britax Maxway with a wedge to get the best recline for DC but still have leg room for the front seat passenger!

Pin0cchio · 05/06/2024 00:58

Id check if it actually fits your car properly.

Some small cars & certain seat angles don't actually safely fit the larger ERF seats well. I could not get one in my hatchback car at all behind a front passenger. You might be able to get it in but you need to be sure its actually positioned correctly/installed right.

It looks ok but it's a lot of money to spend if it's not. So maybe if I can get it checked my a local expert that would be good.

@DreamyNavyMentor His head is fine in the maxi Cosi; Britax and Cybex have really wide head rests - much wider than a cabrio-fix - they’re not meant to hold the babies head so much as support when they lean to sleep

Car seats are such a minefield! I have been looking this brand for my girls, but I’ve also received some really contrasting advice from the same company but different representatives!

Springadorable · 05/06/2024 01:06

@DreamyNavyMentor if you've got a small car and are returning the Move then the Avionaut Sky is one of the most compact erf seats and one of the only ones that actually does fit babies from birth. He'd fit in it perfectly now. It is more money though, but I love it and my daughter's super comfy (we also have the same seat as you, a britax maxway and a minikid...)

Thanks. I've got the move kid, not the move, so it's the same price as Avionaut Sky. I find the names of the axkid confusing so I maybe not understand, but the Move is £220 at the moment.

What is the different - do I know, no!

Hi, I used to be a qualified car seat fitter, we didn't sell Axkid so I can't comment on that but all Maxi Cosi seats last up to 15 months average, usually you remove the inserts at around 3-6 months. I just looked on their website and they are all more than 80 cm. Generally the rule is when babies head reaches the top of the back with bum all the way down and legs and knees are designed to hang right over the end of them. The youngest I have ever seen in 8 years who had genuinely outgrown an infant carrier was 9 months and the baby had weighed over 13lbs at birth and had over 6ft tall parents.

Mairzydotes · 05/06/2024 06:53

OP, your baby has loads of room left in their infant carrier. Infant carriers are a bit like a cocoon . People only think the babies look too big because they are comparing them to when they are a newborn, and had lots of space around them.

When they say a seat is suitable for 60cm , they mean at a bare minimum. They also mean for an older baby than has reached the next development stage , and can sit independently for a prolonged time. A 6 month old baby isn't at that stage yet. The seat isn't suitable for a very tall young baby.

Have a look at the rear facing car seat groups on Facebook, they give good advice.

TheOneWithUnagi · 05/06/2024 07:12

Sorry if I've missed this but have you adjusted the straps further down the seat? We have the move and have to do this manually by taking the cover off.

Springadorable · 05/06/2024 07:23

So the move kid has a higher weight limit. This is useful if you have a chunky baby, but my kids will outgrow on height way before weight so it's not helpful for tall slim kids. If that's the case with your baby (admittedly hard to predict at this point so go on centiles and your and your partner's build) I'd swap it for an Avionaut Sky.

Thanks. Is the sky just as safe as the Axkid? I'm obsessed with Axkid as they are hyped as super safe etc

Yep, both have passed the Swedish plus test which is the hardest safety test for seats 😊

Straps move with the head rest.... As far as I can see
