To say milk is going sour more quickly now?

We get milk from the milkman and it’s going sour every week before the next lot arrives. I was just talking to a friend about this and her milk (from a supermarket) is going sour faster too.

YABU - I haven’t noticed
YANBU - yes, my milk is going off quicker

IDK. If true is it to do with distribution timescales?

I drink lactose free dairy milk (from the supermarket fridge) which takes AGES to sour. So that's an option. It tastes no different to any other dairy milk.

I'm not sure Id expect my milk to last an entire week, 3 or 4 days max particularly if left out in the (slowly) warming weather.

Yes, I have noticed that both at home and work. At home it is not so much of an issue most of the time as we use it up quickly. At work they actually replaced the fridge as the owner was concerned that milk was going off so fast but it is till the same with new fridge. It tends to be with wholemilk more than low fat of skimmed in my experience.

A friend of mine complains of the same thing in her house.

loropianalover · 04/06/2024 16:20

Edit as I misread!

I have not noticed this but my milk doesn’t last In the house for 7 days anyway.

Sirzy · 04/06/2024 16:22

I get mine from the supermarket and never had a problem

Validus · 04/06/2024 16:22

we buy it from Aldi. Our last 6 pint bottle was still fine 2 weeks after the best before date.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 04/06/2024 16:24

We have an insulated box on the doorstep for the milk, and it doesn't go off any quicker in summer than winter. I do put an ice pack in there if we get a very hot spell though.

Ozanj · 04/06/2024 16:24

Milk should last 2 weeks, yogurt 4 weeks. But fridge needs to be clean and 4 degrees for that.

We keep it in the fridge! But maybe we’re just not using it as quickly these days. But it seems to be going off before the Best Before date, which seems odd.

it’s semi-skimmed.

Has anyone else who uses Milk&More noticed their milk is going off quicker?

Fridge needs to be clean? That might explain it. 😂

I’ll check it’s at 4 degrees.

I agree it is! I get mine from the supermarket and they aren't lasting as long as used to. I'm now buying the more expensive filtered versions to try to make it last until the expiry date.

MagnetCarHair · 04/06/2024 16:33

Not really. The opposite of anything. I bought milk today with a use by date of June 17. 🤷🏼‍♀️

TroysMammy · 04/06/2024 16:36

I buy a 4 pint of supermarket skimmed which lasts me about a week.

There is a Welsh dairy who deliver to corner shops and there was an explosion of dissatisfaction on local Facebook groups that milk was lasting 1-2 days at home before going sour. They did offer your money back of you had a receipt from the corner shop but most people don't bother. I always get one because the place doesn't have a high hygiene score and I wouldn't be surprised if a mouse got into a loaf of bread. The owner has been charged previously for selling out of date food and changing dates on fresh produce. The only thing I buy from there are postage stamps because they don't go off 😁.

48wheaties · 04/06/2024 16:36

I actually stopped getting milk delivered for this very reason, OP. Whilst I want to support the milkman (like previous generations used to do), the reality is that putting milk on the milk float breaks the cold chain for several hours and shortens the life span of the milk, even if you subsequently put it into the fridge at 4C. Can´t say I've noticed this with shop bought milk.

Yes I've definitely noticed this. Did last summer too and I stopped ordering until autumn. I think ours delivers ridiculously early, like 1am so it's lying out until 7am?

Singleandproud · 04/06/2024 16:41

@DoingJustFine of course you keep it in the fridge but what about the transportation time and time on your door step?

StandardSize14 · 04/06/2024 16:41

blue milk lasts longer i think? But I may have just guessed that

Therapy4all · 04/06/2024 16:43

Yes, I noticed and changed my fridge temp and that's helped

Michellebops · 04/06/2024 16:43

I buy filtered milk like cravendale as it's on OH who uses milk.
My father in law gets his milk delivered for convenience and it goes off quickly. We thought he was leaving it on the counter (dementia) however since getting a ring doorbell on his house we realise the milk is being delivered around 1am and not being brought in until around 9 when the carer goes in.

So now we think is because it's not in the fridge for a good while

ThursdayTomorrow · 04/06/2024 16:43

I noticed a massive improvement in how long both my milk and vegetables lasted once I got a new fridge. It was the fridge not the produce that was the problem.

bilbodog · 04/06/2024 16:43

Yes ive noticed this. I usually buy semi-skimmed from waitrose and have had a few cartons go off before the use by date whereas before i could safely use milk for a couple of days past the date.

Meadowfinch · 04/06/2024 16:46

I buy a 4 pint container, decant it into 1pt containers as soon as I get home and freeze three, then use milk at a rate of 1pt every three days, so I never get to the going off stage, or waste any.

Much less expensive and generates less waste plastic.
