To say milk is going sour more quickly now?

We get milk from the milkman and it’s going sour every week before the next lot arrives. I was just talking to a friend about this and her milk (from a supermarket) is going sour faster too.

YABU - I haven’t noticed
YANBU - yes, my milk is going off quicker

We use Milk & More, no issues. It goes in an insulated box and then into the fridge. I put ice in the box if its really warm not a chance of that yet this year

I've had random experiences of milk. The whole spectrum from Cravendale filtered full fat that was already curdled before the bottle was even opened for the first time Envy (not envy), and Co-op semi-skimmed that was fine two weeks after the date on the label.

Where milk has gone off quicker I strongly suspect a break in the cold-chain, and last time this topic was discussed I seem to recall supermarket workers saying sometimes the trolleys with cold items can get left out in non-chilled conditions for quite a while. I know certainly that the Asda where I bought it seems to have problems managing it's stock - I've been in there and they've had out of date Cravendale on the shelf, which is some achievement given that the date is usually two to three weeks.

I buy a 4 pint of supermarket skimmed which lasts me about a week.

There is a Welsh dairy who deliver to corner shops and there was an explosion of dissatisfaction on local Facebook groups that milk was lasting 1-2 days at home before going sour. They did offer your money back of you had a receipt from the corner shop but most people don't bother. I always get one because the place doesn't have a high hygiene score and I wouldn't be surprised if a mouse got into a loaf of bread. The owner has been charged previously for selling out of date food and changing dates on fresh produce. The only thing I buy from there are postage stamps because they don't go off 😁.

I have seen corner shop deliveries outside for several hours this time of the year. Drove past a corner shop just before 10am and drove back about 2:30pm and it was still outside

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 04/06/2024 17:07

How long is the milk sitting outside before you bring it in.

Gingertam · 04/06/2024 17:15

I buy the supermarket own filtered milk or Cravendale. Lasts for ages when opened and I prefer the taste.

LadyWiddiothethird · 04/06/2024 17:18

Yes! Mine is delivered by Milk and More as well into an insulated box,I am in Staffordshire.

FaintlyMacabre · 04/06/2024 17:22

My milk (not Milk and more) was delivered at about 11 last night! Luckily we noticed and brought it in but otherwise it would have been sitting outside at about 10 degrees or more overnight. So I’m sure it would have gone off much quicker if it hadn’t been drunk in about 5 minutes!

MorvernBlack · 04/06/2024 17:23

We use Cravendale mainly or occasionally Yeo Valley, both usually keep beyond the use by date. But we are very careful to put it straight back in the fridge and not leave the fridge door ajar when getting stuff in and out.
Local milk does often go off though, so we no longer buy it.

Everythingiscalmfornow · 04/06/2024 18:00

I do know that a few years ago in an area I used to live the local small Spar supermarket had a reputation for the milk going off very soon. The customers stopped buying their milk there and went across the road to the corner shop to buy their milk there instead. There was a lot of conversation about the issue locally and people concluded it was the temperature the milk suppliers for the small supermarket kept the milk at that was the problem.
Apart from that historical localised issue I've not had a problem and in fact generally the supermarket milk I buy exceeds it's best by date.

massistar · 04/06/2024 19:07

Could someone link to the type of insulated box they use please? Is the milkman happy to put into it?

Has anyone else who uses Milk&More noticed their milk is going off quicker?

We use milk & more and we get deliveries 3 times a week so it never really has to last a whole week, so I’m not sure. It’s only noticeably gone a bit off if it was left out for too long before we brought it in, in full sun (ie once or twice the milkman didn’t put the bottles in our little insulated container, and they sat there in the morning sun for a few hours).

If you’re having to make it last a week, maybe try more frequent smaller deliveries in the summer when it’s warmer outside? Or do you have a cool box you can leave out for them?

Our milk man milk is still good over a week later in the fridge. Think I need to cut down on our order. Not milk and more though.

fieldsofbutterflies · 04/06/2024 19:19

We had this problem a while ago and it was the temperature of the fridge.

We still buy the same milk now (blue from Tesco) and it's fine.

minipie · 04/06/2024 19:20

We buy Yeo Valley from Ocado and it’s definitely going off much quicker than say a year or two ago. Not sure if this is the product itself or Ocado supply chain issues, but veg/salad also seems to go off quicker so I suspect supply chain issues.

I’ve taken to freezing ours as soon as it arrives and defrosting as needed (it’s in card tetrapaks). But you can’t do that with glass bottles.

Nat6999 · 04/06/2024 19:28

I made the mistake of ordering ordinary milk instead of Cravendale last time I did my online order, it didn't even last as long as the use by date. I ended up throwing away nearly half of what I ordered.

SoupDragon · 04/06/2024 19:29

I buy Sainsbury's skimmed and it's absolutely fine.

LoobyDoop2 · 04/06/2024 19:35

I only use milk for one coffee a day, and since I started buying Cravendale I find a two pint bottle stays fresh for the five days or so I take to get through it. Ordinary semi-skimmed used to go off before I could use it, even a pint at a time. That’s why I switched, I’d rather pay a bit more but not waste it.

Yes - we stopped using them in the end for this reason. I dont think their distribution is workjng very well sadly

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/06/2024 19:37

How long is it usually in the doorstep before you take it in and is the seal intact?
When I was a kid, birds often pecked through the foil tops of the bottles, which would make it sour more quickly.

Happyher · 04/06/2024 19:37

Have you checked your fridge is working properly/ cold enough? I buy supermarket milk and it generally lasts till the useby date

helpfulperson · 04/06/2024 19:38

I've noticed mine goes off more quickly if I forget to put the wee insulated bag out for my milkman. The sun shines on my doorstep in the morning so the increased temperature and sun really make a difference.

jessycake · 04/06/2024 19:40

I have 2 pints every other day from the milkman and I have filtered milk the rest of the time , the milk from the milkman goes off quickly , so I always use it before the filtered milk .

Lookingoutside · 04/06/2024 19:41

You need Cravendale filtered from the supermarket. I live alone and 2 litres lasts well over a week.

ConflictofInterest · 04/06/2024 19:47

You're missing a response option, I do notice and my milk seems to last longer these days. We went on holiday and I was amazed the half opened milk was still fine when we got back after 10 days. I have switched to organic, supermarket milk though and it was at the bottom of the fridge in the coldest part so that probably helps. Maybe your fridge is on the way out?
