To say milk is going sour more quickly now?

We get milk from the milkman and it’s going sour every week before the next lot arrives. I was just talking to a friend about this and her milk (from a supermarket) is going sour faster too.

YABU - I haven’t noticed
YANBU - yes, my milk is going off quicker

Average ambient temperatures are rising now due to climate change. This was the hottest spring on record. Refrigerators will need to work harder to maintain the same internal temperature and any time the milk spends outside the fridge will be more effective in spoiling product than before.
We will start noticing more and more things like this now.

I buy Sainsbury's skimmed and it's absolutely fine.

Whereas my Sainsburys has always been appalling for skimmed milk. And it has got even worse lately. Literally going off within 2 days of buying it (which was 4 days before the best before date!).

I try to buy milk from other supermarkets as much as possible (but Sainsburys is MUCH closer) and that milk is fine so it definitely isn't my fridge.

Jennyathemall · 04/06/2024 19:57

Milk goes off faster - Option 1 the cows are broken. Option 2 the fridge is broken.
Yup let’s go with option 1.

Londonrach1 · 04/06/2024 19:59

You be shocked how milk is kept at farms. My parents used to order straight from the farm but after a visit there and seeing how it stored...in hot sun they realized why it went off so quick so now order from a supermarket...sadly it's fresher ..awful that's the case

Rings vets “cows nipples
just giving that goes off in 24hours Milk man”

😂😂

milk and more not a local dairy farm supplying large areas… not their fault. 🙃

ok this made me grin, but in reality there’s lots of other options, like milk hanging round longer at the farm/bottling plant/warehouse before being delivered, or the refrigeration at any of those places being sub par

IDK. If true is it to do with distribution timescales?

I drink lactose free dairy milk (from the supermarket fridge) which takes AGES to sour. So that's an option. It tastes no different to any other dairy milk.

That's what I have had to turn to, though I don't have lactose intolerance. I think there's something about the packaging that keeps it fresher. If milk comes in a container that any light can penetrate, it's gone in less than three days.

Grandplace · 04/06/2024 20:24

Ours lasts longer now. Years ago it would only last a few days.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 04/06/2024 20:24

We buy full fat milk and I can't remember the last time we had milk go off. It doesn't hang around though.

Auburngal · 04/06/2024 21:27

I buy supermarket own brand filtered milk. No issues with sourness even though some bottles last me 8-10 days

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 04/06/2024 21:32

It depends what time it's delivered and how long it's outside before it's brought in.

My milkman delivers just after 2am but the other milkman in the area delivers about 10pm. Milk goes off really quickly if it's humid overnight. A cool box is a perfect idea.

OneBadKitty · 04/06/2024 21:34

My milk lasts about 2 weeks before going sour! From Ocado

Solmum1964 · 04/06/2024 23:17

Once opened, I never expect milk to last more than a few days - even if it has another week or more on the shelf life.
I do use the sniff test in determining whether it's still ok to use though.
However, my son had a bottle that was (just) past its use by date and that was fine - at least for hot drinks.

I hadn't thought of that. I was assuming it was the lactose itself that went off quickly.

We had this problem a while ago and it was the temperature of the fridge.

We still buy the same milk now (blue from Tesco) and it's fine.

Yep my parents were complaining about the same thing then finally realised the ancient fridge had given up!

pinkdelight · 04/06/2024 23:22

ours delivers ridiculously early, like 1am so it's lying out until 7am?

Same here with Milk & More - sometimes they've delivered before we've even gone to bed! Like around midnight, instead of early morning like when I was growing up.

YellowLoafers · 04/06/2024 23:59

DoingJustFine · 04/06/2024 16:27

Has anyone else who uses Milk&More noticed their milk is going off quicker?

Yes we have. Over the last 4 weeks or so we’ve had to chuck milk that’s gone off but still in date. We’ve got an insulated milk minder and bring milk in early morning. I contacted milk & more about it, they replied to just they’d let the depot know. We’ve had deliveries for 5 years without issues until recently.

stayathomer · 05/06/2024 00:03

I thought you were going to say you shopped in Aldi!! Aldi milk always goes off well before the due date for us so we stopped buying it- haven’t noticed it anywhere else

QueenBitch666 · 05/06/2024 00:20

Maybe try 'milk' that isn't the product of slavery rape and murder? Because you're not a calf. Just a thought 🤔

LiterallyOnFire · 05/06/2024 00:22

You won't convert anyone like that @QueenBitch666

My God. You've convinced me with that well reasoned argument! 👏👏👏

No more slavery-rape-murder juice for the dc from this very moment.

*Edited to say to op - I haven't noticed any difference. My slavery-rape-murder juice (from Lidl) seems to last as long as ever.

We buy 4 pints semi skimmed from the supermarket and it often goes off before the end date.
