Just had a discussion with my DH about this and am wondering which of us is in the minority in the world of Mumsnet.

YABU: I still use cash and make sure I always have some on me

YANBU: I barely ever / never use cash

You’re on the internet, you’re being tracked right now…

I think you quoted the wrong person. I was talking about scrapping copper coins, not tracking.

You don’t really need it, I might carry some coins for legacy systems and machines that haven’t been updated.

Rarely do multiple types of cashless payment networks go down together visa, Mastercard, American Express. Having multiple cards using these different payment systems mostly covers you for issues.

One shop has issues, you drive to the next one. Even schools now have PTA bank accounts for those small payments.

What if you walked to the shop and the other is two miles in the other direction?

LlynTegid · 04/06/2024 07:09

Use it for a number of things, want it to continue as I think bank charges would increase were it not available. Also a back up for the occasions systems are not working.

mydogisthebest · 04/06/2024 07:15

I use it quite a lot. This week alone 2 shops I have bought things in didn't take cards.

I do use cards and don't mind them. People paying with phones drives me mad. So many times they have problems and hold everyone up.

Vettrianofan · 04/06/2024 07:21

Yes. DC need cash for school like school fairs, ice lollies etc. I usually have some lying around.

I always use cash where I can. I don't want cash to die out so I'm doing my little bit. We've all seen issues with recent tech going down. I don't like to be 100% reliant on technology. I'm all for keeping cash alive and small independents love it 😀

Well said.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻

My apologies

Genevieva · 04/06/2024 07:28

Use it or lose it. I like living in a world with cash, so I make sure I use it. Just like I use the village shop every week. Otherwise it will close and it won’t be there when I need it. We create the world we live in through the choices we make. Choose what you c want the future to be like and make your choices accordingly.

GreenMarigold · 04/06/2024 08:08

I don’t use cash unless I have to, but that turns out to be quite often. In the past week I’ve used it to make a small charity donation, give some money to someone at work, do a tombola stall at a fair and give to a brownie fundraising event.

lljkk · 04/06/2024 09:17

Yes
I don't have a preference. Whatever is convenient in the moment.

3 day ago: card-only till at supermarket. These tills are always available, the ones that take cash have a long Q.

2 days ago, Best Chippy in Sheringham, Customer Queues are usually out the door: only takes cash.

Yesterday in very quiet Charity shop, £3 cash purchase. Conveniently could put my (very small) purchase item in my coin purse for safe retainment.

Ineedwinenow · 04/06/2024 09:23

I do 50/50 , for the small independent shops in my area I always use cash as the bank charges them a transaction fee for every purchase they have on a card machine and lots of independents can’t really afford it and for big chains/internet shopping I use card

TipsyB · 04/06/2024 09:42

I only carry some for emergencies.

skyeisthelimit · 04/06/2024 09:56

I usually carry about ££50-£100 on me. I live in a rural area with small shops. A lot have a minimum spend of £5 due to card charges, which is fair enough. There are also coffee mornings and car boot sales and markets etc, which all need cash. School also need cash if they are doing a cake sale day or similar event.

As an accountant I see how much the charges are and what a burden they are on some small businesses.

People should not expect everywhere that they go to take cards. We had a bingo night in the village hall and about 3 people out of 100 wanted to pay by card and had no cash on them at all. Who expects a private person organising a village event to have a card machine?

My daughter uses apple pay for most things, but does also carry cash for the same reasons as above.

Why would you get massive discounts on goods and services by using cash? Genuine question - I'm not in the UK and most places here would prefer you didn't use cash.

Just by asking. So if buying something I always ask how much for cash whatever if may be (obviously not in supermarkets or chain stores) but you'd be surprised how much discount you can get by doing this.

CHEESEY13 · 04/06/2024 15:47

Neighbour uses her phone to pay for everything - so she was quite non-plussed last week when the phone went missing for 48hours. She was even going through the wheelie bin with the garden rake. I guess there are pros and fons whatever method you use.

Purplebunnie · 04/06/2024 16:00

Not all taxis accept cards
Saw a pub recently with sign on door that they only took cash
Not every business is set up to pay tips on cards - recent visit to hairdresser

So yes I do have cash on me

Edited to add Market I went to recently the card machine had crashed so again cash

YourPinkDog · 04/06/2024 16:00

All the card machines went down in my high street for an afternoon. You could not buy anything in the chains, but the independents were still taking cash.

purplecorkheart · 04/06/2024 16:05

I always have cash on me. There are a couple of small businesses that have note up about the bank fees they pay on cards so tend to use cash there and similar small businesses. There are quite a few people who have honesty boxes at there gates locally selling things like bread, eggs, flowers, plants etc so also use cash there.

I also do online shopping for some non-tech friends and family. They pay me back in cash and it is out of my way to lodge.

mondaytosunday · 04/06/2024 16:06

Rarely. Mainly to tip people.

IamaRevenant · 04/06/2024 16:09

I use cash where I can because there is a massive homelessness issue where I live and I actively make sure to have some spare change at all times.

I have personal experience of homelessness and know of several people who have died of either starvation, freezing to death or alcohol withdrawals as nobody has any spare change any more since COVID.

longdistanceclaraclara · 04/06/2024 16:12

Ive got a tenner in the back of my phone case that has been there for over a year and a pound coin in the car for trolleys. Apart from that I take out £160 month to pay for the kids riding lessons, they wont take card or bank transfer. Apart from that, never.

Cuckoochanel80 · 04/06/2024 16:19

Yes, we need to keep cash, so many reasons to.

Toooldtoworry · 04/06/2024 16:21

I've not carried cash for over 10 years. I always worry I'll lose it.

leafwoman · 04/06/2024 16:27

YES. Cashless society is bad for everyone, and I hate that some people are sleepwalking into it.

My teenagers also use cash a lot, and DD's boyfriend.

Ponderingwindow · 04/06/2024 16:32

I always carry cash as an emergency backup, but I haven’t had to replace my stash in a couple of years.
