Just had a discussion with my DH about this and am wondering which of us is in the minority in the world of Mumsnet.

YABU: I still use cash and make sure I always have some on me

YANBU: I barely ever / never use cash

This is an entertaining and possibly prescient listen !
also my card was hacked at the wknd so if I hadn't had a little pile of cash to use I would have been monetarily fucked.....esp as bank holiday here and I can't get to bank til tmrw. Will be eyeing up shells on the beach next time I go.......don't throw baby out with bath water !

Yes for the window cleaner, village newsletter, tips at restaurants, cash for the kids and parking change. All small stuff though.

Cornflakelover · 04/06/2024 04:29

Yes
to the point that if a place refuses cash I won’t use it
However most places still take cash and I’ve started to notice that a few places have signs up saying we take cash 😂

recently a local bakers ( small chain ) announced they were only taking cards at one of their branches on Facebook

local people ( myself included ) messaged them and posted on their website / FB page if that was the case we wouldn’t use them any more and the reasons why they should keep cash .

They obviously took it seriously as they reversed the decision within a few weeks and will carry on taking cash .

I will on occasion use my card but I prefer to use cash
and will pay even for big things in cash

I recently paid for new carpets and shutters in my son’s house and paid cash . Neither of the companies had a problem with taking cash

I have pre pay gas / electric meter and top up in cash

I keep a few thousand pounds in cash in a safe in my house and I always have around £150 cash in my purse

I got into horrible debt in my twenties due to being stupid with credit cards / loans so I find that using cash is better as I know exactly what I have spent
whereas tapping with card it’s to easy ( for me ) to overspend

StarlightLady · 04/06/2024 04:49

I’ve had an emergency £20 note in my makeup bag just in case. It has been there quite some time.

Himitsu · 03/06/2024 20:38

No and it really pisses me off when a place asks for cash because wtf carries cash these days??

I do - and most people who will be shopping on the market here tomorrow as its
preferred, Bread shop, always need coinage, cleaning lady, hairdresser, pedicure, taxi, Craft Fair stall holders, Church or School Fairs, raffle tickets, Gran’s Bingo cards, window cleaner, all cash preferred, grandaughter 9, absolutely emphatically, cash preferred.
Also, using cash means we can deposit small change into the charity box on the counter, they are big on Air Ambulance round here.
Purses, wallets, piggy banks, boxes under the bed, money clips, money boxes,
cash tips, still in use.
If you were in a local bank Friday pm or Saturday morning, you would realise,
cash is king.
”It’s money makes the world go round, that clinking clanking sound”

Can't stand shops and cafés that refuse to take cash. It should always be a choice. And yesterday a shop refused a £10 note because it was Scottish. Won't be going back there.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 04/06/2024 05:03

Card whenever possible. Cash is totally inconvenient. Sick of having to take out £20 to pay for something £13 or whatever, simply because the business is stuck in the 70's and won't take cards, then I have a pointless £5 note and a load of change kicking about for weeks on end, when if the place just took cards those odds and ends would still be in my bank account and not sitting somewhere gathering dust.

Much easier to keep track of electronic spends rather than a daft barter system. Sooner paper money and coins are consigned to the dustbin of history the better.

wintersgold · 04/06/2024 01:08

No point in carrying cash regularly IMO (other than maybe a set amount for emergencies). Barely any places accept them - most shops & cafes I go to are cashless

I'm also shocked that so many of you mention places that exclusively take cash - haven't seen any that do that in years!

Edited

maybe not but they exist - in the London postcode where our daughter lives, 2 that we know of hairdressers, nail bar (traditional)cafe, homewares shop, only accept card over £30 purchase, midnight shop, Saturday stall holders (including one antiques stall who doesn’t price anything but sizes you up before suggesting one)
pubs, fish and chip shop, not exactly sub cultures, but cash prefrred is more prevalent than you realise.

Shoxfordian · 04/06/2024 05:17

Only use cash when I get my nails done or pay the beautician for my eyelash tint

Otherwise I've never got any on me. It must impact homeless people that lots of people don't carry cash now, even if I did want to help then i couldn't

sashh · 04/06/2024 05:20

I do always have some cash on me but rarely used it. So I can't pick one,

SOxon · 04/06/2024 05:28

LordSnot · 03/06/2024 21:19

Aren't you a bit embarrassed posting that twaddle among all the people saying they use cash?

I think this is an ironic post

Growlybear83 · 04/06/2024 05:37

Most people I know still use cash on a regular basis and I like to keep around £30 on me when possible. I go to a lot of antique and collectibles fairs, and most of the traders prefer cash. I've got a friend who I go out with regularly who has never used a debit or credit card - she pays for everything in cash, including her supermarket shopping!

Simonjt · 04/06/2024 05:38

I don’t use cash, where we live only 2% of transactions involve cash, and the majority of those are at the airport. I wouldn’t even to know where to find a shop here that takes cash.

S0livagant · 04/06/2024 05:46

bravissimore · 03/06/2024 23:35

I would prefer if cash didn't die out.
Once we are in the realm of digital payments only we can be completely tracked. There's always a trail.
People will say that's a good thing as it's only baddies who worry about that. But they are wrong. It's a personal freedom. Not all state actors are benign.

Having said that, it's the convenience of tapping that will kill cash. I always dread the thought of handing over a fiver or ten pound note and then getting back a huge mix of coins , many of which like 5p, 2p and 1p are unusable. I actually think dropping every coin smaller than 50p would really help. It would also put a stop to people charging bloody 99p or 9.99

Australia got rid of 1c and 2c and just rounded for cash decades ago.

Growlybear83 · 04/06/2024 05:51

I had forgotten that my local fish and chip shop and kebab shop will only take cash, and the local corner supermarket will only accept cash if you spend over £10.

dontbelievewhatyousee · 04/06/2024 06:10

You don’t really need it, I might carry some coins for legacy systems and machines that haven’t been updated.

Rarely do multiple types of cashless payment networks go down together visa, Mastercard, American Express. Having multiple cards using these different payment systems mostly covers you for issues.

One shop has issues, you drive to the next one. Even schools now have PTA bank accounts for those small payments.

FangsForTheMemory · 04/06/2024 06:13

I always have at least £10 on me. When Sainsbury’s had their computer glitch I used cash to pay and sailed past the crowds of people scratching their heads.

scalt · 04/06/2024 06:19

I do use cash (cards as well), because I do feel the government might be trying to remove it by stealth, so they can track and control our spending, and stop us buying Easter eggs in lockdowns, and de-monetise people they don’t like, so we have a duty to resist. Yes, call me a conspiracy theorist if you will. Pre 2020 I would have dismissed the idea as impossible, but now, I won’t put anything past this or any other government.

I hardly ever have cash on me, however on Monday had £70 in my purse after having money left over from my birthday. Went into the local shop and went to pay by card but they said their card payments were down and only accepting cash payments. Made me think about having some emergency cash on me all the time.

Natsku · 04/06/2024 06:27

I still use cash, though I don't always carry it with me. Use it at second hand shops usually because there's a 50 cent charge if I pay by card at the second hand shops in my town. My daughter gets her pocket money in cash so I need it for that (and she discovered just how useful that was when she was on a school trip last month. Her friends have bank cards while she had cash, they all went shopping and several of her friends couldn't use their cards as they had hit their spending limit, or in one case it would work in one shop but not the next, then work in the next one. She ended up using her cash to buy them dinner because they couldn't even buy something to eat)

madmumofteens · 04/06/2024 06:33

I have started to carry cash don't want a cashless society and hate my spending being tracked at all times also hairdresser only takes cash

You’re on the internet, you’re being tracked right now…

That depends on a number of things, Tor plus a VPN limits tracking.

RampantIvy · 04/06/2024 06:40

I use a card 99% of the time but I always have some cash on me as well. Some car parks still only take cash, and many car parks in the Peak District take payment via app or cash. Unfortunately, getting a phone signal in these car parks is just about impossible so cash it is. I have no idea why they don't take card payments.
