Do you still use cash?

BitchesBeSniffin · 03/06/2024 20:34

Just had a discussion with my DH about this and am wondering which of us is in the minority in the world of Mumsnet.

YABU: I still use cash and make sure I always have some on me

YANBU: I barely ever / never use cash

Contactless on my phone is my default.

Butchyrestingface · 03/06/2024 20:36

"Cash" - wha dat?

TeaKitten · 03/06/2024 20:36

I don’t ‘always make sure I’ve got some on me’ but I usually spend it on Saturdays at the kids football so that day I carry cash.

Womp · 03/06/2024 20:37

YANBU.

I prefer paying in cash because I know where I am with it. Sometimes when I take just my card to town I think I’ve only tapped it a couple of times, but when I check my statement realise I’ve spent more than I wanted to. I think tapping a card is too easy and I personally struggle keeping a track of it. Where as with cash I can physically see what I’m spending.

FlippetyFlop77 · 03/06/2024 20:38

I always use cash where I can. I don't want cash to die out so I'm doing my little bit. We've all seen issues with recent tech going down. I don't like to be 100% reliant on technology. I'm all for keeping cash alive and small independents love it 😀

Himitsu · 03/06/2024 20:38

No and it really pisses me off when a place asks for cash because wtf carries cash these days??

isthewashingdryyet · 03/06/2024 20:38

I carry a very small amount every day, but have a stash of cash at home for the days when the bank/supermarket/petrol stations are all down at the same time.
Enough for a couple of weeks food shopping and petrol
it does happen, look at the child benefit glitch today

But you'd be even more pissed off if there was a tech glitch and you couldn't use your card. It's always good to carry cash for emergencies.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 03/06/2024 20:39

I lend money to my family/friends who don't have internet banking - they pay me back in cash and I'll probably put half back into my bank and keep the rest on me - so yeah.

Maddy70 · 03/06/2024 20:40

No. Only use cash for my cleaner

What are the odds of that happening though? That has never happened to me before ever.

XenoBitch · 03/06/2024 20:40

Yes, I use mostly cash for purchases as it is easier to budget.

S0livagant · 03/06/2024 20:41

I use cash every weekend at the farmers market, to pay for haircuts, in pubs, to buy eggs from local farms. I use card for things like the weekly shop and petrol.

amireallydoingthis · 03/06/2024 20:41

Always use cash, easier to keep track of what I'm spending and it helps local businesses. Live in a market town so market stalls and small businesses prefer it

Youdontevengohere · 03/06/2024 20:41

Rarely. I just don’t find cash convenient.

Fab238 · 03/06/2024 20:41

Yes, I do. I have cash in my wallet, in my car, at my workplace locker and at home. I use card too, but always have cash on me.

Extremely high. There have been loads of tech glitches recently with banks and supermarkets. It's been all over the media. Always a good idea to have a bit of cash to hand imo

PrescriptionOnlyMedicine · 03/06/2024 20:42

I use a mix of cash and card. A few weeks ago, the supermarket systems went haywire and staff on the door were advising customers without cash to shop elsewhere.

Muffin101 · 03/06/2024 20:43

I do tend to have some cash in the car, only £20-£40, and then a bit of loose change too. I don’t use it all that much but I like to know it’s there. We have a lot of cash at home, we’re self employed and some of our customers choose to pay cash, but that generally gets built up over the year then used to pay for Christmas and our holiday, then the rest in savings, so not exactly specifically as cash as such.

BitchesBeSniffin · 03/06/2024 20:44

I think the only cash I have is a £1 coin that sits in my glovebox for the trolley! If I ever need to pay for anything else in cash I always find it a right faff to go to the ATM and get it out. Much prefer bank transfer / card payments for the electronic trail.

I haven't used cash regularly my whole adult life. Not carrying cash has never been a problem in 15+ years.

Beezknees · 03/06/2024 20:45

I don't carry cash with me at all times but I still use it regularly. DS's hobby only accepts cash or cheque as payment so I pay cash for that every week. I also borrow a lot of books from the library and they also only take cash for the reservation fees.

Hotnamehere · 03/06/2024 20:45

I mostly use card but always have some cash on me. I've been caught out before when card machines and shop/cafe systems have gone down.

Pixiedust1234 · 03/06/2024 20:48

Cash only. I am unable to work and stbx will hand me whatever cash he thinks I'm allowed to have.

Many financially abused women need cash to escape and online only makes it so much harder for them. For this reason I will continue to use cash whilst it is available. Other people will need it.
