Do you still use cash?

Just had a discussion with my DH about this and am wondering which of us is in the minority in the world of Mumsnet.

YABU: I still use cash and make sure I always have some on me

YANBU: I barely ever / never use cash

Yes, I still use cash in my daily life quite a lot. Annoys me there's only like 1 self service till which accepts cash, if any at all but small price to pay.

FuzzyPuffling · 03/06/2024 21:10

My hairdresser prefers cash so they don't have to pay card fees.
Window cleaner ditto.

Chocolateorange22 · 03/06/2024 21:13

I'd rather not, usually pay contactless for everything on phone. However the kids hairdresser, our village hall and our council car parks only ever want cash. Like why?

BouleDeSuif · 03/06/2024 21:17

Cash because I can budget better that way. I take it what I need for the day and that's it.

FloralMonster · 03/06/2024 21:17

Mostly pay on my phone but do always have cash on me.

I go to the charity shops once or twice a week with the dcs so like to have change for that.

I’ve noticed it tends to be older folk who use cash. My nana never trusted cards, she always drew her cash out and spent accordingly for the week.

I do find it easier to keep track of spending when I use actual cash. Maybe that’s the secret to budgeting.

You must be new here, no one in mimsnetland has seen an actual piece of money since 2005 and lives in a place where no shops take cash

Aren't you a bit embarrassed posting that twaddle among all the people saying they use cash?

BotterMon · 03/06/2024 21:21

Of course I use cash - gets me massive discounts on a plethora of goods and services. It also supports independent shops which are being screwed by card charges.

Of course I have cards too but would never be fully tech reliant.

Waltdisnerd · 03/06/2024 21:22

Everyday. Much prefer it

RobinGet · 03/06/2024 21:22

I use cash for the smaller local shops, pubs, cafes, taxis, window cleaners and market stalls.

windysocks · 03/06/2024 21:23

YABU
Watch the opening episode of the handmaids tale where June tries to buy a coffee with her card, but overnight the government has disabled all females access to banking - it really stuck with me. We need cash and if the sh*t really hits the fan, gold!

Move22 · 03/06/2024 21:23

Cash for tipping.
hairdresser only takes cash.
put it in cards to nieces and nephews.

mindutopia · 03/06/2024 21:24

I don't use cash unless I have to, and I haven't for years, certainly before COVID.

We live rurally and there are no cash machines near us. Using card or apple pay is the only easy way unless I want to drive into the nearest town and pay for parking to go to the bank.

Pootle40 · 03/06/2024 21:25

Almost never have cash. Don't even take a purse out. Pay for everything with Apple Pay.

Starseeking · 03/06/2024 21:27

I use my phone for everything. Hardly ever even take my bank card out with me as no need.

tuvamoodyson · 03/06/2024 21:33

I use a mixture of both, admittedly, I use my card the majority of the time but I always have cash too…

I remember that! I loved the series, but fucking hell... I was mad with rage at the end of every episode.

YoongiMarryMe · 03/06/2024 21:43

Cash for everything possible!

I still pay my bills in cash (except home insurance, which is the only DD I have). I pay in cash 100% of the time in shops.

We're a low income family and this has always helped me budget. I’ve £0 debt so it works!

PassingStranger · 03/06/2024 21:44

I use both cash and card.

LouLou198 · 03/06/2024 21:46

Yes, because I shop in several local small businesses. They get charged when the card machine is used.

Sevenwondersofthewoo · 03/06/2024 21:51

Both to be honest

plus most businesses do both and if tills go down you need cash to pay and does happen frequently

pizzaHeart · 03/06/2024 21:55

Hotnamehere · 03/06/2024 20:45

I mostly use card but always have some cash on me. I've been caught out before when card machines and shop/cafe systems have gone down.

I’m the same plus we pay cash for parking and in a few other regular places but we always keep cash just in case.

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 03/06/2024 21:59

I haven't used cash for a long time - before this chaos theory that they're trying to get us to stop.

I don't carry a bag. I use my phone or watch to pay and keep a card in my phone case as some places don't take Apple Pay or in case the batteries of either die. It's quicker than counting change etc.

I take cash out when I need to get my car cleaned or my nails or weighing myself at the gym. If I have excess, I keep it hidden and try not to use it but always do far sooner than expected. money in my bank is the same. Sob. . It's nice to have some for a surprise takeaway or taxi but all take cards now anyway.

To sum up, some things are essential to have cash, some are nice to have cash but it's a hassle to get to the cash point and keep hold of it.

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 03/06/2024 22:02

Also, I was actually really pleased when Covid meant that taxis, car parks and the like had to start taking cards. I can't tell you how many times have I'd parked somewhere to realise I can't pay to park as I don't have coins!

Londonrach1 · 03/06/2024 22:05

Yabu. All the time. Don't want the government know everything I'm doing even if it's boring and buying veg. I also use it to budget. I have so much per week in cash..if I can't afford it I don't buy it. It works!

Bazinga007 · 03/06/2024 22:05

The only time I use cash is getting the same £1 pound coin out of my bag for the locker when I go swimming.

I find it easier to budget using card, everything shows up on the banking app straight away.
