What's your cautionary tale?

BrightInMyNorthernSky · 02/06/2024 16:42

Having just got through the most stressful week ever due to a nightmare situation of my own making, I thought I would share a previous and current cautionary tale.

  1. Always remember to change the address on your V5 and not just your license. I didn't. DH got caught speeding twice on the same day on the same stretch of road (33 in a 30) in my car. Both fines went to old address. Didn't answer them, obvs. The whole sorry mess played out without me being aware and by the time it all caught up with me it was had been banned from driving for six months and fined £2k - five months earlier! So had been driving while banned for five months!!!

  1. Get it in writing. Even if you have to follow up a conversation with an email. Keep it somewhere safe.
  2. When travelling, don't pre-order seafood from a restaurant where you haven't had a chance to see what their hygiene standards might be.
  3. Get it in writing.
  4. Nothing will cost you in the end like someone doing you a favour free of charge.
  5. Don't drop the end of a charging plug in liquid then try to suck the liquid out while the other end of the cable is still plugged in.
  6. GET IT IN WRITING.

However, before you go down to reception and complain that your electrics don't work, check that you don't need to put the door key card in a slot on the wall in order to activate the said electrics. Ah, these modern hotels........

On this occasion it was the room/hotel and not me.

Unlike yesterday when l went in the Gents by mistake 😳.

When staying at an airbnb/rental apartment . Take 5 minutes when you arrive to do a quick video of the place and one when you leave, If there's any issues/broken items, make sure you get a video of it.
Doesnt happen often, but if an owner tries to claim you broke something or left the place in a mess you have proof. Saves a lot of hassle and doesn't take long.

Yes, I've learned this one the hard way too (in a place where I won a holiday in a charity auction! And I was not the cause of the issues to a piece of furniture).

I would also add, to put everything back as close to the same place as it was on arrival - so if a blanket or cushions were on the bed, return them to that room. Don't put anything where it can't be seen on a scan of the room.

And no it didn't give him the squits! It was rare, at a family event like Christmas, certainly not as often as the humans had tea!

The 10% tolerance is a myth. You can easily check that. My friend got a ticket for 32mph in a 30 zone.

I did for doing 33 in a 30..

Embarrasing?!

I think it is supposed to cause dramatic post birth wind, as opposed to pooing yourself and having everyone peering up your canyon.

Everyone who goes to university for a career based course should be very clear what the actual role they are training for entails, and whether it would suit them. Also, checking out some of the role limitations. Students spend far more time checking the small print on a £50 purchase than they do on their degrees, in general.

Love this one! It really made me smile. (With apologies to you and the dog, @Vroomfondleswaistcoat — as I’m guessing you didn’t find it that funny at the time…)

At the time it was terrifying. We were stuck on a straight road with no gates, no other way home other than back the way we'd come, and those wasps were angry. They were flying around in a cloud, following us and landing on us where they could. Fortunately neither dog nor I were stung really badly, I got about five stings and the dog a few more, none in vital spots.

This was a couple of years ago and I can find it funny now. The dog still turns and runs from wasps (she can tell the difference between wasps and bees, which is quite some feat). But I'll never forget that feeling when we saw the combine clip the hedge and this mass of wasps come heading our way....

Never ever accuse someone of theft or similar unless you have solid proof. Had a situation where it was alleged a new boyfriend of our circle had stolen medicines. Shit hit the fan, months later it turned out he was completely innocent. Years after that had a similar situation where a friend suspected theft. But I said hang fire until you know. He was also innocent. Always been glad that second situation was saved by my caution because of the first. Still miss our friend from the first debacle.

If you find you're regularly having to work at your marriage, then you're in the wrong marriage. Life can be really hard work, so your marriage should always be your easy, effortless place.

2under2survivor · 04/06/2024 16:09

If someone tries to steal your bag/phone, just let them. The end loss will likely be the exact same if you try and resist, but with added injury and trauma (or worse)

On a similar theme, if someone tries to kidnap you or bundle you into a van or get you to get into a car, resist with all your might and scream loudly. Do everything to avoid getting in even if you are being assaulted. If they get hold of you, the end result is likely to be much worse than a violent assault - ie. torture/rape and then death.

In a very similar theme, if you're driving and someone forces themself into your car and threatens you with a gun/knife whatever............spot the nearest, large inanimate object and crash your car into it. You're far more likely to survive the crash than whatever the nutter has in mind.

Don't spend an absolute fortune on various treatments and supplements for your soft splitty nails before trying adding Boron to your diet.

Get a pack of 20 mule train borax which is the 'as mined' powder straight out of the ground and an element missing in our modern diets as the soil is depleted. You need only a tiny bit each day. Say you lick the end of a biro and dip it in and then put that amount in your coffee. Literally about 200 grains a day.

Within four months you will be able to use your nails to cut steel pipe !

Yes it is advertised for washing clothes but that is because it is so alkaline. It works. It's cheap. One pack will last you a million lifetimes so share it around all your splitty nailed friends.

Please can you link to the product you are talking about?

I got mine from Ebay. 20 mule team borax. It's the only one that isn't mixed with other cleaning products. There's a seller on there selling 100g or 200g pouches. It has made an incredible difference to my nails.

Before leaving the house always check yourself in a full length mirror.
Especially if you are wearing a dress/skirt made from light weight material and a thong.

WhenTheMoonShines · 03/06/2024 08:37

Seems to be your issue isn’t the fact that you forgot to change your address, it’s that you have a reckless and idiotic DH that doesn’t care for anyone else’s life or he’d not have been speeding.

BTW he’s lied about it being 33 in a 30. There’s a 10% tolerance. He’ll have been doing much more than 33 - and twice in one day too!

Not RTWT so someone may have probably already responded but the 10% “rule” is a recommendation in some guidance that not all police forces adopt. You can literally get a ticket for being 1mph over in some areas.

SinnerBoy · 05/06/2024 21:28

If you eat a lot of fruit and veg, there's no real need for boron supplements, pulses are particularly high in it and probably the best dietary source is buckwheat / bulgar wheat.
