To catch a cold sore from popcorn

ArryArryPotter · 31/05/2024 18:21

DH has a cold sore and just shared a bag of popcorn with the kids with some finger licking. Am really annoyed as I think there’s a chance they’ll catch the cold sore virus from this. DH says no risk as there was no kissing or skin to skin. Am guessing there is nothing I can do about it now but AIBU?

Tbh OP, you probably all have the virus anyway and its just laying dormant. Your dh can be infectious days before a cold sore appears, and assuming he's a loving husband/dad, he'll kiss and hug you all on the daily, so you're already well exposed to it!

BashfulClam · 31/05/2024 19:54

They ate a big deal as they are a lifelong virus. Once you have herpes you don’t get rid of it.

Why would anyone worry about catching a coldsore? I honestly wouldn’t think twice about it.

You clearly have never suffered with them then. They can be incredibly painful and sometimes my lips have swollen massively. When I get a cold I get them up my nose, on the end of my nose and on my lips. My friend gets them in her eyes. It's miserable painful and embarrassing. If I could change one thing about me it would probably be that. The Healing process is slow and if you turn over in the middle of the night and catch it on the pillow, it bleeds horribly and you are back to square one. It the shittest of shit I can tell you.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/05/2024 20:08

Is this along the lines that Bishops can only catch VD from a toilet seat?

shellshocks · 31/05/2024 20:32

I think it's a big deal to have cold sores, I wouldn't want to have them or have any kind of pain/discomfort inflicted on my children - which I understand they are.

That said, the risk in this case is so minute (if at all) so I think you Abu to have a go at your DH and start a thread about it.

fliptopbin · 31/05/2024 20:39

Hasn't almost everyone been exposed to this at some point? I would think that if both of you get them, chances are, the kids have already been exposed and are in the lucky majority who doesn't get them. Particularly since I believe they can be contagious before they appear.

ArryArryPotter · 31/05/2024 19:08

Really? I think that it’s fair enough to not be happy when it was totally avoidable!

People make mistakes, they make a wrong judgement, they dont always get things right, they miss things or dont think about something until after. We all do that because we're not perfect

What is the proportinality of a) being really upset about it and b) posting about it!

Mistake made, wont be made again

tweetypi · 31/05/2024 21:16

I think some posters don't understand that you don't just get a cold sore once, when you catch the virus you get flare ups for life and as pp have said, they can be grim. I get cold sores and I'm so careful around stuff like that with my children, I'd feel really guilty if I gave it to them.

TheTartfulLodger · 31/05/2024 21:25

ArryArryPotter · 31/05/2024 19:33

Just to be clear, I am also in the ‘they are miserable and I wouldn’t wish them on anyone’ camp.

My maybe badly phrased AIBU was whether this a likely contagion risk and something to worry about or a very small one!

Edited

Then you'll probably understand that your DH feels lousy enough with a cold sore already without being made to feel like he has just contaminated his own children with leprosy or something.

Utterlyb · 31/05/2024 21:29

some people appear rather unaware of what having cold sores can be like, perhaps if they were aware the virus can also lead to genital herpes they may be less blasé ( although having hsv1 more commonly affects the mouth and hsv2 the genitals, both can affect each area). However I would say the risk of catching it via sharing popcorn is fairly low.

Hotttchoc · 31/05/2024 21:31

I'd be annoyed too OP as I've never had a cold sort and wouldn't want me or my children to start getting them if it could be avoided!

I completely agree OP! My daughter is six and I have never kissed her on the lips, we never share drinks and she is aware of why. When I have a flare up they are so painful, ugly, make me feel self conscious. I wouldnt wish them on anyone.

As a side note, I have taken L-lysine for the past 18 months daily, and I have found I have very minimal cold sores, and when I do get them, I increase the dosage the pain and duration is considerably less. I would highly recommend to anyone to give it a go!

And would you appreciate someone berating you about it and then starting a thread about you on a dad's/mens forum?

Doveyouknow · 31/05/2024 21:40

As others have said a good proportion of the population carry the virus but most of us don't get cold sores. The chances are your kids have already been exposed as you shed the virus ahead of a cold sore becoming visible..

Once you have the herpes virus 🦠 it’s with you for life.

Like the chicken pox virus that can lead to agonising shingles.

Separate bowls and towels &c while an infected sore or blister is present.

I have just had a cold sore and it is a big deal.
Unsightly and so painful. At some points my lip was a big open sore that was just bleeding. Horrible. This one has been around for 2 1/2 weeks. (Normally I can shift them in 2 weeks but I am quite run down). I got this one from being in the sun - that is a trigger for me. First one in about five years but a bad one.

I am very careful when I have one. No sharing of drinks or food. No kissing dh.

I would be very disappointed if someone gave my children them. Luckily they don't have the virus or it doesn't cause them an issue as I know it doesn't for many. Wouldn't take the risk though if I can help it.

snoopyfanaccountant · 31/05/2024 21:56

Please don't minimise the severity of the cold sore virus. A friend's DC spent a year in hospital after the cold sore virus entered their spinal cord. The DC was 12 years old and returned to toddler development stage (had to relearn how to walk, had to be toilet trained, etc).

Well, if I wasn’t freaking out before, I absolutely am now!

That said @RaverQuavers looking at the voting, maybe a lot of people agree with you!

Most people use the app and you can't vote on that.
It was easily avoidable. Hopefully they'll be fine though. But of course YANBU

Even if they do catch a cold sore is it really big deal

It's Herpes!! An STD. Of course it's a big deal!!

Loloj · 31/05/2024 22:09

I’m really surprised at people saying cold sores are not a big deal! I’ve never had one and would never want to get one- they look awful and painful and once you have the virus in your body it’s there for life and you can repeatedly get flare-ups.
