To catch a cold sore from popcorn

ArryArryPotter · 31/05/2024 18:21

DH has a cold sore and just shared a bag of popcorn with the kids with some finger licking. Am really annoyed as I think there’s a chance they’ll catch the cold sore virus from this. DH says no risk as there was no kissing or skin to skin. Am guessing there is nothing I can do about it now but AIBU?

@ArryArryPotter You're right, he shouldn’t be sharing food like this when he has a cold sore. He also needs to be washing his hands more often and making sure he has a separate towel.

Doubt it’ll ever happen again tbh. He’s feeling very guilty after reading up on it (I hadn’t said much to him). Just hope that it’s ok this time.

That said, their childminder of many years also suffers from cold sores and is super kissy / huggy. There’s a good chance that the kids have been exposed already and are not reacting, like @NoddyfromToytown2024 above mentioned.

No you can’t get a cold sore from
popcorn
The herpes virus needs skin to
skin contact.

Grapewrath · 31/05/2024 23:05

Also most people who have either strain of the virus won’t have symptoms so it’s likely you or your kids already have it

Lmao I love it when people are so confidently incorrect.

Someone on this thread is criminally stupid (and criminally bitchy) but it ain't the OP.

🤦🏽‍♀️
It is transmitted by saliva. So spit covered fingers diving in and touching popcorn can pass it on.

A cold sore outbreak can trigger an outbreak in another person if they share saliva directly or indirectly.

@RaverQuavers

Well it’s that or she is criminally stupid since cold sores pass via skin to skin contact. Not from licking fingers after eating popcorn

Skin to skin only eh? Could you not even be arsed to Google it before stating that so confidently? Literally the first result says saliva and sharing stuff too...

You're obviously going through something at the moment to have become so snarky and unkind on this thread, as well as stating stuff confidently that is simply false. Maybe don't take it out on other people, whatever it is that's happening with you.

Please check herpes uk for the most up to date and clinically verified information. As follows:

Herpes is passed directly from the affected area of skin (which could be the genitals, face or hands), by direct skin to skin contact, with friction, when the virus is present. (See also asymptomatic shedding, below.) It may come back at or near the place the virus was caught. That means that when you catch it genitally, It does not travel through your body and appear on your face; it won’t be in your saliva.

There is a lot of misinformation out there but herpes.org.uk is a very reliable, reputable site.

It’s easy for the cold sore virus HSV-1 to spread to your eyes from your hands (for example, you touch an open sore on your lip and then touch your eye). It can cause eye herpes when it first infects you (primary infection). But it’s more common for it to affect your eyes (either traveling through your nerves or spreading via your hands) when the virus reactivates.

HSV-1 spreads easily between people through infected saliva and other bodily fluids. That can happen directly through person-to-person contact like kissing. It can also happen indirectly through shared objects like eating and drinking utensils, hygiene items, makeup and others).

This can cause vision loss.

Far better to practice good hygiene than take the risk.

A cold sore outbreak can trigger an outbreak in another person if they share saliva directly or indirectly.

This is just not true, sorry.
If a person has the virus they can’t catch it again from another person or have an outbreak due to someone else- this is due to antibodies their body has created.
if a person has a flare of symptoms it’s due to something happening within their own body.

That’s about a different herpes virus.- HSV-2 - genital herpes which is an STI

Cold sores are caused by HSV-1

Grapewrath · 31/05/2024 23:23

OP- please find some reliable information on this. This thread has a lot of hysteria and misinformation.
I understand your worries but you and your kids are likely absolutely fine.

I didn’t say they were catching it again. I said that being exposed to an outbreak can trigger an outbreak.

You are wrong.
This covers heroes simplex in general. Both strains of herpes can affect the mouth or genitalia. Both can be an STI
Cold sores are more likely to be caused by HSV1 but can also be caused by HSV2 less commonly
Genital herpes can be caused by either strain.

This is untrue sadly - you can catch it from using the same towel for eg.

Yes very RARELY can HSV-1 spread to the genitals and very RARELY can HSV-2 spread to the face. When it happens, it is usually due to oral sex when one partner has an active sore on their face or on their genitals.

HSV-1 is named oral herpes and HSV-2 is named genital herpes, they are different viruses and they don’t spread in exactly the same way.

I have just had a cold sore and it is a big deal.
Unsightly and so painful. At some points my lip was a big open sore that was just bleeding. Horrible. This one has been around for 2 1/2 weeks. (Normally I can shift them in 2 weeks but I am quite run down). I got this one from being in the sun - that is a trigger for me. First one in about five years but a bad one.

I am very careful when I have one. No sharing of drinks or food. No kissing dh.

I would be very disappointed if someone gave my children them. Luckily they don't have the virus or it doesn't cause them an issue as I know it doesn't for many. Wouldn't take the risk though if I can help it.

Why don't you use Zovirax?
My son used to be prone to cold sores every summer, as I was as a child. If you apply Zovirax when you feel the first tingle, it stops the cold sore developing.
I'm surprised so many people are still suffering from cold sores and don't seem to know about Zovirax. Keep a tube in the house ready for the next time.

You don’t even know the transmission differences between HSV-1 and HSV-2 and now think you know all about triggering a dormant virus outbreak?

Grapewrath · 31/05/2024 23:43

Like I said- there is a lot of misinformation and out dated information on the internet. As follows from herpes.org.uk

Cold sores are only caught by direct skin contact, with the affected area. They are not caught through sharing cups, cutlery, towels, lipstick, etc. (unless there is warm pus on the item). Experts are definite about this, though this fact is sometimes ignored by unreliable sources on the Internet and elsewhere.

Herpes.org.uk are accredited by the NHS and the British association for sexual health who write guidelines for health care professionals. They are supported by the British Association of Dermatology. They are who sexual health clinics and Drs signpost patients to.
Please stop sharing anything you can find on google. It isn’t helpful.
