How do we get home??

ohnoohnowhattodo · 31/05/2024 08:22

Currently on holiday in Europe. Today is the day we fly home. 4 adults and 2 kids. DD was up all night being sick, presumed she had picked up a bug. We've now got two of the adults also being sick and the other two not feeling great. Other Dc is fine. Not sure if it's food poisoning from eating out last night or just a sickness bug. Now we've got the logistical nightmare of getting to the airport and getting home. It would not have been too bad if just one DC had been poorly as we could have got a buggy for them etc but all of us travelling now seems unrealistic. But we can't afford to stay and we all have work to get back to on Monday! Anyone been in this situation and have any tips??

Isn't this where you contact your travel rep / insurance company? Obviously you can't fly home.

Cupcakegirl13 · 31/05/2024 08:25

Yes exactly this you get onto your travel insurance company and you stay put! Of course you can’t fly 🙄

wizarddry · 31/05/2024 08:25

Contact your insurance company and see what they suggest.

ohnoohnowhattodo · 31/05/2024 08:27

Ah ok I didn't know if they covered you for just stomach bugs. We booked everything individually as we've done Disney and then travelled around Paris so we didn't book through any holiday reps or anything but we did book insurance

Nightmare. Even if you could, logistically, get everyone on the plane there’s still the question of whether you should, morally.

WinterMorn · 31/05/2024 08:29

Insurance. It will be grim for everyone if you board that plane.

Have a look at your policy and there’s probably a number you can ring and ask for advice if you’re covered if you book another night or two and rearrange flight / Eurostar etc home

Overthebow · 31/05/2024 08:30

You can’t fly, so contact your insurance now and get a hotel for tonight and probably tomorrow night too

Ginmonkeyagain · 31/05/2024 08:31

Yeah, speak to your insurer. I doubt you will be let on the plane if you are all actively throwing up.

The good news is you are only in France so there are reasonable alternatives to flying and you can break the journey up a bit os you need to.

ZekeZeke · 31/05/2024 08:33

Check your excess with your travel insurance, ours was €500pp so were not covered for the change of flights and an extra night, plus they insisted on a note from the doctor abroad. We didn’t visit the doctor, like you it was a bug.

honeypancake · 31/05/2024 08:37

Contact your insurance. Most likely you will all feel better after a day or two at most, and will be able to fly Saturday or Sunday with plenty of time before your work. It may still be that you will have to buy flights / book accommodation yourselves and then insurance will reimburse you later. I hope it works out!

whatsitcalledwhen · 31/05/2024 08:38

OP please don't get on the plane, you could make lots of other people ill and isn't that completely unfair?

Hope you feel better soon, fingers crossed your insurance company can help.

OutOfTheHouse · 31/05/2024 08:39

Straight onto the insurance. It’s not fair on anyone, you or other passengers, to travel in this state.

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 31/05/2024 08:41

Travel insurance.

You will need a doctors note though for each person claiming. Ask hotel receptionist for doctors details.

LIZS · 31/05/2024 08:42

Are you able to stay longer in your accommodation? If it is a hotel can they advise you of a local doctor or medical centre as you will need some form of confirmation that you cannot travel, are any of you well enough to do so?

Hereyoume · 31/05/2024 08:43

Just take the train back, jou can break the journey up and at least have access to toilets.

Mind you, if it's something contagious . . .

Ginmonkeyagain · 31/05/2024 08:44

Have you spoken to your airline? They may be able to change your flight if you are unable to travel on your booked one. Doesn't solve the accomodation issue but it is one less thing to worry about.

ohnoohnowhattodo · 31/05/2024 08:49

Now 4 out of 6 of us are down. We are staying at centre parcs so not as easy or cheap to rearrange as a hotel. The main issue at the moment would be getting to the airport as I don't think any taxi would actually take us especially seeing as DD can't keep anything down for more than a few minutes and the journey is an hour!

QuickFinish · 31/05/2024 08:51

That's just awful. I'm so sorry you are in this position. I hope the insurance helps. If you are all on one policy it would be much better. Don't forget to take some photos or videos

LIZS · 31/05/2024 08:57

They should still be able to signpost you to medical care, who may prescribe anti sickness medications and rehydration. CP need to know in case others have similar symptoms. You may find your insurer expects those ok to travel as planned

Chersfrozenface · 31/05/2024 08:57

Contact customer services at your Center Parcs resort. They should at least be able to put you in contact with a doctor and tell you whether they have accommodation you can use until you can travel.

And phone your travel insurance company to ask how they can help.

YouveGotAFastCar · 31/05/2024 09:00

You can’t take any type of communal transport, so that rules out planes and trains.

You could drive, if someone feeling well can drive, or your insurance will arrange alternative accommodation for the unwell people.

You won’t be allowed on the plane either if boarding staff can see you’re throwing up.

Contact the holiday insurance helpline if most of you are ill you can't really travel .

MonsteraMama · 31/05/2024 09:07

Not being able to get a taxi isn't the main issue, you can't get on a plane if you're all sick even if you could get to the airport. Insurance asap!
