How do we get home??

Currently on holiday in Europe. Today is the day we fly home. 4 adults and 2 kids. DD was up all night being sick, presumed she had picked up a bug. We've now got two of the adults also being sick and the other two not feeling great. Other Dc is fine. Not sure if it's food poisoning from eating out last night or just a sickness bug. Now we've got the logistical nightmare of getting to the airport and getting home. It would not have been too bad if just one DC had been poorly as we could have got a buggy for them etc but all of us travelling now seems unrealistic. But we can't afford to stay and we all have work to get back to on Monday! Anyone been in this situation and have any tips??

Now 4 out of 6 of us are down. We are staying at centre parcs so not as easy or cheap to rearrange as a hotel. The main issue at the moment would be getting to the airport as I don't think any taxi would actually take us especially seeing as DD can't keep anything down for more than a few minutes and the journey is an hour!

You cannot board a flight! You could kill someone. What is wrong with you?!

You could give it 30 mins and see if her temperature comes down.

If not I'd consider giving another half dose and just make sure I don't exceed the 24 hour dosage?

I'm pretty sure there is app you can download which will translate text into English for you

I think google lens might do. Otherwise laboriously typing into google translate will give a good idea of what it says.

Hope everyone's feeling better very soon, OP.

We caught cryptosporidium from the water park at centre parcs le lac in France. Was awful.

DodoTired · 01/06/2024 00:58

Im not sure what you expected from insurance- they aren’t holiday rep or concierge. If they told you they’d cover your expenses provided you give them the dr note, thats all they should have done 🤷‍♀️

I hope you get home safely x

MariaLuna · 01/06/2024 02:53

Hope it all clears up and you get home safe and sound.

This is why a credit card is needed for any unforeseen bumps on holiday.

shggg245 · 01/06/2024 02:55

I would take DD back to hospital.....see if they can take a sample for diagnostics?

They'll probably put her on IV fluids + meds

That's a high temp and will be making her feel awful.

Is she weeing OK?

All the best - thinking of you

Sablecat · 01/06/2024 05:59

That's very poor of the resort. A French hotel once found me an emergency dentist during a public holiday in August! I thought the rule with vomitting was not to re-medicate because you really can't be sure how much, if any, of the drug was vomited up. I think you need to take her back to the hospital.

MumInBrussels · 01/06/2024 05:59

I'm not a doctor, and I do tend to be over cautious on things like this but I wouldn't want to risk accidentally giving too much paracetamol - I hope she's feeling better this morning! You can alternate nurofen and paracetamol - they will sell kids nurofen at the pharmacy. There will be a pharmacy de garde that's open even if it's a holiday - https://www.sosmedecins.fr/en/on-duty-pharmacies/ has details, and SOS médecins will come to you if you can't get to a doctor and need someone urgently. They might speak English if you don't speak French. (They are not cheap, from memory, but they are available out of hours.)

Thanks for all the advice and concern. She had a terrible night with her temp but it has finally now come down and she is sleeping so I'm hoping we are now over the worst of it! Going to just let her sleep as long as she can today and see where we go from there!

I haven't read the entire thread... So don't know if anyone else has said..

I'd be contacting your home GP... Explain to receptionist your situation and the urgency re the temperature... But also to provide sick notes for insurance.

We had similar a few years ago... There was no issue with GP issuing insurance cert and giving us advice.

Hope you're all better soon!

Mrsjayy · 01/06/2024 07:24

Oh no I can't believe how useless your insurance company were! I hope you get home OK what an absolute bummer end to your holiday.

Bennetty · 03/06/2024 07:11

I think the main issue is how wildly unethical it will be for you guys to even attempt public transportation when you don't even know if you're contagious.

1989whome · 03/06/2024 07:53

Honestly I have been on a flight where I was the one who couldn't stop being sick, started literally 10ins after we took off, not travel sickness just inconvenient timing. Everyone was so lovely but I felt there pain!! Don't get on the plane lol I agree with others. Phone travel insurance and see if they can help. Hope everyone feels better soon.

eatingandeating · 03/06/2024 07:57

Any good, experienced doctors here to advise, guide and comfort? Some doctors here would have faced similar situations with their young families.

Mindymomo · 03/06/2024 09:41

I hope you managed to get home, do you have hospital discharge notes to send to insurance company to claim on insurance for extra flights and hostel costs.

Toastcrumbsinsofa · 03/06/2024 09:46

Paracetamol suppositories are more effective for a child who is vomiting regularly. I think they are often used in France so any pharmacy will have them available.

Not sure why you though the situation was flippant enough to warrant a "lol" because you could have made many other people sick if it had been norovirus. Even if it wasn't contagious, nobody around you could have known.

It's like someone saying "I had covid and couldn't stop coughing the entire way through a flight, it was awful for me lol haha don't do the same thing".

twilightermummy · 03/06/2024 10:18

My friend got back from Paris last week. She was there for a week and spent a day at Disney. Herself and her partner were vomiting as soon as they got back then discovered they had covid

OldieButBaddie · 03/06/2024 10:44

I had a similar situation in Portugal last year but it was food poisoning.
I called Mobidoc Doctor Near Me - Talk To An Online Doctor - Mobi Doctor
and they issued me with a prescription for an anti emetic which instantly stopped the vomiting. I took a load of Imodium too and managed to get home.
They sent the prescription to the nearest pharmacy immediately and dh went and got it.

amusedbush · 03/06/2024 11:27

I echo the PP who recommended using Google Lens to translate the medication packaging. I'm just back from Japan and it was an absolute lifesaver; I used it so often I ended up adding it to my phone's shortcuts.

Download the Google app and go to the translate feature, which opens your camera. Hold it over the text as if you're taking a photo and it will show you the English translation.

Bellie710 · 03/06/2024 12:29

My niece and her friend got food poisoning last year that started just as they were boarding the plane, there flight home was horrific one was worse than the other and the air stewards had her lying on the floor at the back of the plane. They also wanted to get paramedics to meet the plane they were that bad. Definitely staying put is the best option and claim on your insurance.

ohnoohnowhattodo · 31/05/2024 08:27

Ah ok I didn't know if they covered you for just stomach bugs. We booked everything individually as we've done Disney and then travelled around Paris so we didn't book through any holiday reps or anything but we did book insurance

‘just a stomach bug’ may be e-Coli/salmonella/listeria, norovirus or any manner of communicable bacterial of viral illnesses - any of which mean that you will not be permitted to fly as they can be fatal for the young and elderly.

That it is the whole group indicates that there may need to be an investigation at local level - you need to contact your travel agent and insurance people as you will likely have to remain there for several days. There should also be a doctor at the hotel/resort if you’ve used one.
