How do we get home??

ohnoohnowhattodo · 31/05/2024 08:22

Currently on holiday in Europe. Today is the day we fly home. 4 adults and 2 kids. DD was up all night being sick, presumed she had picked up a bug. We've now got two of the adults also being sick and the other two not feeling great. Other Dc is fine. Not sure if it's food poisoning from eating out last night or just a sickness bug. Now we've got the logistical nightmare of getting to the airport and getting home. It would not have been too bad if just one DC had been poorly as we could have got a buggy for them etc but all of us travelling now seems unrealistic. But we can't afford to stay and we all have work to get back to on Monday! Anyone been in this situation and have any tips??

I don’t think you’ll be able to board even if you did make it to the plane. You really need to contact your travel insurance sooner rather than later to get advice on what to do next. You’ll not be the first with this issue and they’re the professionals!

Rubbish way to end your trip, hope you all feel better soon! 💐

dizzydizzydizzy · 31/05/2024 09:09

OP, please don't even attempt to travel - it's being unfair on yourselves and very very unfair on your fellow travellers.

Please phone the insurance company and speak to the center parks staff asap.

Hairyfairy01 · 31/05/2024 09:10

Like others have said, you are unable to get a taxi, plane or train. No one will take you, nor should they. Contact center parcs and your travel insurance asap.

OldTinHat · 31/05/2024 09:12

This happened to my DM a few years ago. She was given an injection before boarding the plane to stop the D&V.

SneezedToothOut · 31/05/2024 09:12

You’re likely to need a doctor’s note to claim anything from insurance. They might cover a change of flights and additional accommodation or possibly a hire car for you to get back to the UK.

Bjorkdidit · 31/05/2024 09:13

If you talk to Center Parcs they might be able to let you stay where you are for a couple more days.

After all, if it's a contagious bug their cleaners won't want to be doing the changeover and your accommodation might need an extra thorough clean in order for it to be safe for the next guests.

fieldsofbutterflies · 31/05/2024 09:18

You need to speak to Center Parcs staff and ring your insurance company ASAP.

Please don't even think about travelling home.

MrsRolandRat · 31/05/2024 09:21

No point trying to board the flight as you'll be denied by the airline if multiple people in your party are visibly vomiting.

I'm cabin crew and you would be offloaded even if you did manage to make it past ground staff.

Sickness bugs spread like wildfire on aircraft and it's not only unpleasant being sick/poorly on a plane it's unfair to potentially give it to 150 other people.

Contact your insurance, you may have to foot the bill yourself first but will definitely be covered for new flights/accommodation costs.

SneezedToothOut · 31/05/2024 09:30

8/12 of us got norovirus the first time we went to Disney. Just think how many mucky hands touch everything there…..

TheCheeseThief · 31/05/2024 09:32

You won't be allowed to get on the flight. You need to contact your insurance and wait till your all better to fly home.

Outnumbered83 · 31/05/2024 09:39

You shouldn’t even be contemplating how you get to the airport with so many unwell. Call your insurer and speak to your accommodation asap.

Contact your insurance company.

Alternately - some fly home (surely you dont all need to stay)?

How long is your flight?

Bellaboo01 · 31/05/2024 09:44

ohnoohnowhattodo · 31/05/2024 08:49

Now 4 out of 6 of us are down. We are staying at centre parcs so not as easy or cheap to rearrange as a hotel. The main issue at the moment would be getting to the airport as I don't think any taxi would actually take us especially seeing as DD can't keep anything down for more than a few minutes and the journey is an hour!

Go to the local Dr/pharmacist and get some anti-sickness med.

Dont eat anything and just have sips of water.

fungibletoken · 31/05/2024 09:51

So sorry you're in this situation, OP. I'd ring your insurer before doing anything else (e.g. trying to see a CP doctor) as they will tell you what is and isn't covered. For instance, you might be covered to get help at a public hospital but have to pay if you see a private doctor, so they'll tell you where to go before you incur any cost. Hope you're all better and home soon.

Busyhedgehog · 31/05/2024 10:01

Depends on how bad it is. Contact your travel insurance and see what they can do to help.

I had food poisoning a few years ago and was throwing up the morning of my flight home and was feeling really rough. Other family had already taken their flight (we lived in different countries and had met up there for holiday). My taxi driver took me straight to the doctor at the airport (the hotel had informed him and he was the same guy who had taken me to the hotel a week before). The doctor gave me an injection and I spent the time at the medical facility until it was time to board my flight. However, I had stopped throwing up before I left the hotel and while I was still feeling awful, I was not throwing up anymore. Took a few days to recover once I was home but otherwise I was OK.

Ttcagainnow · 31/05/2024 11:06

You can't even consider travelling home when you've got 4 out of 6 throwing up, utterly selfish. It's clearly a bug considering the timeline of people going down with it. Why would you risk giving that to all the other passengers who I'm sure also have work to get back to on Monday.

I flew back in February and there was a kid vomiting whilst we all waited to board the plane and I will be honest I was annoyed at the mum for continuing to take her on the flight.

Silvers11 · 31/05/2024 11:12

Have you spoken to Centre Parks customer service and your Insurance people yet @ohnoohnowhattodo ? Are you going to be able to stay where you are for a day or two?

Dennerfold · 31/05/2024 11:14

I wouldn’t even want you in work on Monday, since it’s not 48 hours after last symptoms and I’m sure your colleagues don’t want to hear about you spewing up until the night before but you soldiered on into work this morning, signed your Boss

BigDahliaFan · 31/05/2024 11:16

We had this coming back from Egypt - DH had prawns on the last night 😳, went to local pharmacy and got stuff to bung him up till we got home...

SBHon · 31/05/2024 12:30

That’s rough, sorry OP. Have you had any luck with the insurers?

ohnoohnowhattodo · 31/05/2024 16:35

Just to update. We spoke to insurance who were worse than useless! They said we needed drs notes but said they couldn't telly us where to get them. We went and spoke to centre parcs management who told us all drs were closed today so there was nothing they could do apart from offer us a room for £350 for one night. We declined. We found a driver who was willing to drive us to the hospital as we weren't sure what else to do and DD was really poorly. They checked us over but said they could treat us by keeping us in and keeping an eye on us but couldn't provide a note as they don't do that there. That seemed like the worst choice at that point as Dd was just desperate to lie down. So we found a cheap hotel near to the hospital who had a room available. It was advertised as a hotel but once we got in the room it became clear it is a hostel so now I'm terrified of spending the night here! 3 of the party decided to fly back as the one of them who was sick declined all efforts to make them stay. We just didn't feel right as we are so poorly we wouldn't wish this on someone else. Luckily the family member that wasn't affected has flown our young DS back with them and will have them until we get back. We've provisionally booked a flight for tomorrow afternoon as the airline said 24 hours was fine and we haven't been sick for the last couple of hours. But we will see how things look tomorrow! Crap end to a really good holiday!

What a disaster. I can’t believe how useless everyone is being. I’m also surprised at CP saying that there are no doctors today

saltinesandcoffeecups · 31/05/2024 16:51

I would load up on meds and get home. It sounds like Noro which just sort of runs its course.

So am I. GPs are usually open 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and it's not a public holiday today AFAIK.

For a resort that charges premium rates that's really bad of Center Parcs.

At least the airline is currently being reasonable. Hope you can travel tomorrow.

ohnoohnowhattodo · 31/05/2024 17:05

Thanks everyone. We're starting to feel a bit more human now but DDs temperature has suddenly shot through the roof so just trying to bring that down a bit and hoping it's nothing else
