How do we get home??

Currently on holiday in Europe. Today is the day we fly home. 4 adults and 2 kids. DD was up all night being sick, presumed she had picked up a bug. We've now got two of the adults also being sick and the other two not feeling great. Other Dc is fine. Not sure if it's food poisoning from eating out last night or just a sickness bug. Now we've got the logistical nightmare of getting to the airport and getting home. It would not have been too bad if just one DC had been poorly as we could have got a buggy for them etc but all of us travelling now seems unrealistic. But we can't afford to stay and we all have work to get back to on Monday! Anyone been in this situation and have any tips??

Oh nightmare. This happened to us once but at least we were in the UK. An unpleasant drive home.
Get well soon

So am I. GPs are usually open 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and it's not a public holiday today AFAIK.

For a resort that charges premium rates that's really bad of Center Parcs.

At least the airline is currently being reasonable. Hope you can travel tomorrow.

The OP mentioned that they are abroad, though.
We are in Germany and it was a public holiday yesterday with a so-called "bridge day" for quite a few people today. So, yes, it could be that doctors are closed today.

@ohnoohnowhattodo Can you say where you are? Perhaps the "out of hours" service for your area could be helpful in at least getting you that doctor's note to be able to claim money back from the insurance.

ohnoohnowhattodo · 31/05/2024 17:19

@Busyhedgehog we are staying in an area about 5 minutes drive from the village nature centre parcs

Contact your travel insurance- that's what it's for.

ohnoohnowhattodo · 31/05/2024 17:28

@MinervaMcGonagallsCat as you'll see from my update I already have but they weren't helpful.

What rotten luck op. My kids always get ill at the start of holidays so we've never had to delay flying back. Just a thought but would your gp surgery back home have an online consultation or telephone service? Maybe if you could get a call from them they might do the note....they's charge but it might help you recoup some costs.

Yes most of Europe had bank holiday thurs and a ‘bridge day’ today. So if France also then it’s likely doctors aren’t all open.

Usually though on weekends or other closed days where we live the best option is to go to a pharmacy. They are closed also, but have either emergency doctor onsite or number on door for closest out of ours doctor (could be at a pharmacy in next town or village over). If if you need medicine or doctors note, I suggest looking for pharmacy or out of hours doctor

I can't find a public holiday for France yesterday. Was it Corpus Christi?

Anyway, Center Parc customer services should still have been able to access details of emergency doctors ("médecins de garde"). It's a resort that is aimed at families and charges premium rates, and it's very poor that they didn't.

Caspianberg · 31/05/2024 17:53

@Chersfrozenface - yes Corpus Christi.

Chersfrozenface · 31/05/2024 18:02

Ah, that's not an official public holiday. However, some places close for it and the following day, so evidently some medical services do, also.

I still say Center Parcs should have details of emergency cover for just such occasions.

Caspianberg · 31/05/2024 18:17

@Chersfrozenface it is in many countries. Where I live everything was closed yesterday, and nursery was open only for emergencies today as ‘bridge day’

Its an official public holiday in 25 countries (but not France it seems)

I would load up on meds and get home. It sounds like Noro which just sort of runs its course.

You wouldn't get on a plane with it though, surely?

notimagain · 31/05/2024 19:10

Defo was not a national public holiday here in France either yesterday or today so no idea why Docs wouldn’t be open.

QuickFinish · 31/05/2024 19:16

That's just all sounds awful OP. Hope you all get home tomorrow.

Yes I would.

It’s not airborne unless you’re actively vomiting. It’s typically spread by touching contaminated surfaces. Contaminating a surface includes handling feces or vomit then touching a surface.

Good handwashing and all that would contain the virus.

whatsitcalledwhen · 31/05/2024 20:10

@saltinesandcoffeecups

When OP first posted multiple members of their party were actively vomiting though, one of the kids was doing so every few minutes. Glad you wouldn't fly if that was the case, it would be so unfair to others on the plane.

Don’t congratulate me too much I would have gotten enough antiemetics from the doctor to dose the family and blamed the youngest on motion sickness. Long car ride to the airport and all that.

All the plane vomiting would have been in a bag or the toilet so not exactly out in the open anyway.

My daughter got chicken pox in crete right before we were due to go home. Our insurance paid for us to stay until she was safe to fly home

ohnoohnowhattodo · 31/05/2024 21:50

Sorry to post again but hoping someone might have some advice. DD stopped being sick at about 5pm. However she then got a temp spiking 40, gave her some kids paracetamol that we got from a pharmacy that bought it down a little bit. That was at 6. Just woken to her being 40 again, have given her another sachet, about a minute later she was sick but only a little bit. I'm stuck as what to do now? I presume I can't give her anymore as I don't know how much she kept in! I also can't give ibuprofen as I don't have any with me. Doesn't help that obviously all the instructions on the paracetamol are in French so I can't even see what advice it gives on there!

OP posts:
whatsitcalledwhen · 31/05/2024 21:52

You poor things! If you post a picture of the advice on the pamphlet with the medicine I bet a French speaking MNetter can translate for you!

Thistooshallpsss · 31/05/2024 21:52

Could you ring 111 from France for advice?

BeRealPoster · 31/05/2024 22:02

You could give it 30 mins and see if her temperature comes down.

If not I'd consider giving another half dose and just make sure I don't exceed the 24 hour dosage?

I'm pretty sure there is app you can download which will translate text into English for you

Workingtosurvivenotthrive · 31/05/2024 22:02

Dr told me absorption takes 30 mins, so if they are sick within 30 mins either full dose again or half dose depending on how much sick there was.

This whole thing sounds awful, I hope you all feel better and get home soon.

ohnoohnowhattodo · 31/05/2024 22:06

Thank you! I'll give it half an hour and if the temp doesn't seem to budge I'll try another half dose.

Maybe return to the hospital. French health care is normally very good. Do you have GHIC cards?
