Expensive Watches?

girlfriend44 · 30/05/2024 17:32

Do you know anyone who wear an expensive watch today like Rolex for example?

Even if I was wealthier I would never buy an expensive watch.
Don't wear a watch anyway.
What a magnet for thieves?
What a worry, wondering where you have put it, being careful not to lose it etc?
Most people look at their phones today I would have thought as well?
Absolutely hate anything on my wrist.
Are they for show-offs?

For me, wearing a nice watch is more about appreciating the craftsmanship and how it feels on your wrist.

I don’t think they’re just for show-offs either. Plenty of people wear them for personal reasons—like marking a milestone or just because it makes them happy. I’ve got a Patek Philippe Aquanaut replica that I really love. It gives me that classic look without breaking the bank, and I don’t have to stress about it when I’m out and about.

Everyone has stuff they like.

Some people spend their money on expensive cars, others handbags, phones, clothes, jewellery, wine etc.

I think something like a rolex or expensive watch is probably one of the less bad things to fritter away money on because they seem to hold their value quite well if looked after where you can drop a grand on an iphone and it will be worth nothing in 10 years time, if it hasn't got smashed to bits in the meantime.

You don't even wear a watch. You do you.

Careful! They don't like it when you critise/comment about spending on accessories. I recently asked why anyone would pay almost £500 for teeny tiny hanbag, and got head bitten off and told anyone can spend their money on what they want.
FWIW, I agree with you

I have got five expensive watches, and a £60 Fitbit.

I love my watches, all bought at significant life moments by me, for myself. One with money from my grandmother, one when each child was born, etc..

They are an investment, one goes first a service most years at about £4-500 each.

I live not having to rely on technology to tell the time!

HayFeverNow · 24/03/2025 05:47

People have varying tastes and that’s it!

I have zero interest in watches for myself so have a basic one. I would love to win the lottery and buy my husband an expensive one as he loves watches and it would be money well spent. I find the idea of a Rolex q tacky and dated, so would go for one of the other expensive brands mentioned here. In my fantasy wealthy life ;-)

MyMachine · 24/03/2025 06:18

I find expensive watches a bit cringeworthy.

But I feel that way about all jewellery.

I love clothes, I love clothes so much I have specialist wardrobe insurance.

Jewellery though?

Nope.

It's very 'signifier'.

I don't have a wedding ring and the idea of engagement rings makes me feel ill.

Not for me. No.

No-one thinks you're refined with a Versace watch.

Sorry.

MyMachine · 24/03/2025 06:25

(Not being a dick BTW, just presume that was a joke post).

Lemons1571 · 24/03/2025 06:53

I have been quite fascinated with AP watches since they were a lyric in a Post Malone track. £50k second hand - wow. So they must be quite a trendy current item.

Presumably celebs get them free, marketing potential for the company producing them.

Pedallleur · 24/03/2025 06:58

I have some and had some. I love watches and if I could afford more I would have them. Showing off? No one notices where I work but there are some places where I might not go. A friend who has a huge collection was targeted in the Watch Room in Selfridge in London a few hrs ago and was mugged outside. Thieves were caught and it made him more wary but doesn't stop him enjoying the collection he has

So,

Only an insecure tit would wear a 50k+ watch.

Why else?

I assume that they're not all super into horology, which is aiming for a beautiful thing, the absolute precise measurement of time. Gorgeous.

That's not why people buy expensive watches though.

Which kind of makes me sad.

There are people that exist, that absolutely adore clockwork, the precision, the joy of measuring the universe through cogs and wheels. People like that make me happy.

People that buy that for 100k+ generally don't.

Hey, everyone's got to make a living. I guess.

I have a Patek Phillipe. I rarely wear it - prefer my Apple Watch.

If you want to give it away give me a shout.

OP I don't have the money to buy expensive watches, if I did I would.

Why though?

Are you interested in the science of horology?

I disagree. There are definitely those that just want them to flash but personally I’ve loved watches since my teens and now I can afford to buy them. One of the biggest joys about my Patek is that it’s really subtle, no one gives it a second glance other than perhaps other watch geeks who might clock it.

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 24/03/2025 08:17

@girlfriend44 , I have a gold and diamond Rolex which I’ve had for 30 years. When I was younger my husband often used to buy me expensive jewellery and I wore it all the time. I recently had my Rolex serviced (minimum 1K, thankfully every 10 years) and bought myself a sweet little dressy watch because I’m of an age where I do use a watch and feel naked without one. I wore my Rolex daily for those 30 odd years but now I think I will treat it more as a piece of jewellery it has become such a target for criminals. It will be kept in a safe. And I will enjoy wearing it when the opportunity arises.

Sorry to tell you but they are designer watches. Expensive because they have a label on them bearing a designer name not because they are made by an established watch making company

I love watches.

I have several

Lovelysummerdays · 24/03/2025 09:39

I own a Rolex but I’m not a fan it’s got a gold face / two tone strap, it was a gift but not my style. I wear a Brietling which is quite a bit cheaper but I chose it and is very much my style and feels quite robust, still an expensive watch though it was just over £1k but I’ve had it nearly 20+ years so cost per wear ( including servicing) is pennies. The only other jewellery I wear is a pair of diamond studs which were £5k 15 years ago. Lots of money again at the time but I wear them everyday ( sleep in them too just out periodically for cleaning) so must be getting on for less than a quid per wear too.

AwakeThruTheNight · 24/03/2025 18:45

@Lovelysummerdays my favourite watch is also a Brietling and I also wear diamond earrings and rarely any other jewellery.

I bought myself a Frederique Constant watch on a whim before Christmas, it’s a really nice watch for the price point.

That's not really true I'm afraid.
Some of the most expensive watch buyers I've ever come across are really low key, and generally do love horology.

The added part to this is that their watch compared to their overall wealth is much the same as someone on an average salary buying a seiko.

AdaStewart · 26/03/2025 15:15

My H bought a fake Rolex in Turkey years ago, we needed something with an alarm at the time as his expensive watch didn’t have one. A young lad in Curry’s spotted it & was thrilled as he’d never seen one before 😆 I wouldn’t wear anything like that, a watch is a watch fake or not. Of course almost everyone on MN will have one, along with their 36 bed detached home where they all live rurally.
