Expensive Watches?

girlfriend44 · 30/05/2024 17:32

Do you know anyone who wear an expensive watch today like Rolex for example?

Even if I was wealthier I would never buy an expensive watch.
Don't wear a watch anyway.
What a magnet for thieves?
What a worry, wondering where you have put it, being careful not to lose it etc?
Most people look at their phones today I would have thought as well?
Absolutely hate anything on my wrist.
Are they for show-offs?

How would I know if anyone I know wears expensive watches? Surely nobody takes any notice of other people's watches? Well apart from watch thieves I guess!

And nerds. Don’t forget watch nerds ;)

Houseplantmad · 30/05/2024 22:55

My Rolex was a gift 21 years ago and I wear it every day. I love it as it’s elegant and quite a discreet Rolex ie not blingy. It’s insured and is worth a lot more now as it is a limited edition, which I’ve only just recently found out and was a nice surprise. .

jigglywigglyhungryhippo · 30/05/2024 23:43

I have a TAG and only wear it for dress up events, otherwise I've got a sports watch.

But I also love my cheap plastic Casio watch that has survived everything it's been put through!!

I would love a watch that has in built GPS/satellite for emergencies (even though I know it's very highly unlikely to ever be used!) ... you know.... stranded in the middle of the nowhere with no signal.

DownWithThisKindOfThing · 30/05/2024 23:48

I have a nice watch, I don’t wear it often as I largely wear my Apple Watch. It’s not blingy or big. Someone might rip it off my wrist but then they could take my phone, my rings etc too.

TeeBagGer · 30/05/2024 23:51

My watch is worth about £10k, I wear it every day and it’s the most robust piece of arm furniture I’ve ever owned, I’ve yet to damage or scratch it so it’s worth every penny.

To date I’ve yet to be mugged for it.

It also goes with any and every outfit from jeans and wellies to black tie.

mdinbc · 30/05/2024 23:52

I actually prefer to wear a watch rather than my smart-watch; my watch is easier to see at a glance.

For those who have expensive watches, most have them either for sentimental or appreciate the craftsmanship. I think very few wear them just to show off.

kaalen · 30/05/2024 23:56

I live in north London where it's quite common to be mugged for expensive watches so I wouldn't wear one daily. Phones get snatched too but mine isn't top end and I depend on it for info/directions a lot. I use my phone for telling the time and can't get used to wearing a watch again.

SleepPrettyDarling · 30/05/2024 23:57

I’ve a nice watch, one of the brands mentioned above. It’s slim and elegant, and it looks classy and expensive. Maybe a bit old fashioned for some people’s taste. I’ve enough notifications from my phone to not want a smart watch.

Okbyethen · 30/05/2024 23:58

My husband has a Breitling that he bought in 2007 for £3k. No idea what it's worth now! No intention to sell it as he loves it so much (it's insured separately).

Summertimeagain · 30/05/2024 23:59

I've a Rolex and wear it every day.I love the weight of it and the bracelet design.
A recent full service set me back £600 but it came back to me looking good as new.
I never take it on holiday as I just don't want the stress but it really feels wrong not to feel that weight on my wrist.

Anonmousse · 31/05/2024 00:01

I work in jewellery, lots of people I know have expensive watches.....presumably because they like them!
DH has a rolex that he bought second hand, for hundreds (rather than thousands) about 25 years ago.

Scrumbleton · 31/05/2024 00:10

I wear a Cartier stainless steel Santos most days - love it. Alternately I wear an Apple watch. I also inherited a Patek Philippe which I wear on special occasions - the Cartier is more recognisable than the Patek

Smartphones cost no wear near as an expensive watch.
Anyone with an expensive piece of jewellery is vulnerable. People have been known to rip chains from people's necks.

What is your point here?
Are you asking if you ABU because you don't like expensive watches? Or because you think people are daft for wearing them?
Surely any jewellery is a magnet for thieves. It is up to the individual whether or not they wear their expensive items., and where they are wearing them. At the casino in Monte Carlo, no-one would an eyelid - rather they would be comparing yours to theirs. At B & M bargains - well, customers may bat an eyelid or two
But you could be robbed in either place

Abi86 · 31/05/2024 09:38

Yeah. I do a unique job and we've got a flash watch bespoke to the work we do. It’s custom made and numbered and only the people doing that role/job are invited to order the watch…

Nap1983 · 31/05/2024 09:49

I don't as i don't wear a watch. My DH has a few, not top of the range ones but a good few grand each. He loves them and wears every day. Except when he goes fishing and he wears a cheapy….

I'd love a Rolex, can't afford one so I'll stick with my Fossil one.

I wear a watch every day.

My son turned down an expensive watch for his 21st as it didn’t interest him. A couple of years later, for Christmas, we got him a Fossil watch which he loves. He says that his watch is much admired and people assume it’s a much more fancy watch than it is.

YellowHairband · 31/05/2024 09:59

Even if I was wealthier I would never buy an expensive watch.

Neither would I, but that's just because watches aren't my thing. Anyone with a bit of spare money will spend it on things that someone else somewhere will find to be wasteful, whether it's £100 or thousands.

osint · 31/05/2024 10:01

i looked in a shop window at some watches and they were omg at 30k+ yes they are nice, but me being me id be omg if i broke it etc, that said why are they so ££

You can get a breitling that does that! It has a full emergency beacon, tracking, all sorts. A family member has one - it's quite chunky looking but tbh it's invaluable if you're often off on expeditions. That functionality would be wasted on me!

stillavid · 31/05/2024 12:13

I have a couple of Pateks and wear one of them everyday. My most recent one was a present for a big birthday.

They are insured and I love them.

Ciderlout · 31/05/2024 12:15

Status symbol OP. I’ve got money look at my watch…

Laiste · 31/05/2024 12:21

One of my 20 somethings works for a well known upmarket jewellers.

Every day she comes home and tells us about how she's smashed her target at work. Thousands and thousands of pounds. Tells us she's sold this watch worth 6 grand before lunch and that watch worth 5 grand after her tea break and how often they were bought as a 'weekend' watch or 'another watch'. Just took their fancy in the window.

All these watches are sold with insurance which is only valid if you come back regularly for a service. Sometimes there are special versions which people wait for months for.

There is A LOT of money out there. We spend a lot of time talking about cost of living and austerity - but there's still a lot of folks with a lot of cash to flash.

People who like watches notice other people's watches. I do occasionally get compliments on my watch. Usually said in surprise because I don't like like the sort of person to wear an expensive watch.

massistar · 31/05/2024 12:35

DH and I both wear Rolexes. Mine is his old one so it's men's and quite subtle. His is a Submariner so very recognisable. It's a limited edition colour and has quadrupled in value since he bought it. Neither of us are show offs but he's Italian and likes to buy investment pieces and things that last rather than cheap and replace often. He's desperate for a Batman mentioned above and drools at every Rolex window we pass but they're quite hard to come by these days.

massistar · 31/05/2024 12:36

Same as @Almostwelsh mine is occasionally recognised by watch nerds.
