How old is the child who drew this?

DS just gave me this picture. I know there is quite a lot of variation but how old do you think is the child who drew this?

I work with 4yos and some could draw this. Some really couldn't. I would guess around 5-6.

So DS was upset that he is really rubbish at drawing. He is in year 1 and is 6. I don't have anyone else to compare it with. I obviously told him it was lovely. He doesn't do much drawing at home.

I was going to say 6 but you’d already posted before I could reply. However this is mumsnet which is always bursting with precocious talent!

Ineedaholidayyyy · 29/05/2024 22:13

@Dishwashersaurous that is more advanced than what an average 6 year old can draw and your child clearly has a talent. Most people won't be able to produce anything like that, and that includes adults!

I think its a lovely drawing for a 6 year old. Id be proud of that 😊

Ah now you're just bragging. You know your child is crazy good at art and not comparable to normal 6 year old drawing. Most adults could draw as well as your son. I would say ops sons drawing would be pretty standard for a 6 year old who's not very interested in art

Dishwashersaurous · 29/05/2024 22:16

I know that my son is better at drawing than me, but lots of his class are similar.

I was just trying to show the range, and if the teacher has lots of children in the class then they will see the full range.

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 29/05/2024 22:16

4-5 I would say it’s average for that age. If your child is say 2 then they are an artist (my artist daughter would’ve managed it then- the rest of my kids not)

WiddlinDiddlin · 29/05/2024 22:16

I'd say that is pretty good for 6, with the materials he has available.

You cannot depict a fully blue sky background in felt pen - if you try to draw on top of it, you get a mucky mess so he has no choice if he wants to show a blue sky, but to end it where he has.

There are lots of details, trees, birds, flowers, grass, animals, water? and a good degree of concentration and patience has gone into that.

On the other hand there is little understanding of perspective and that what you know to be there may not be visible in the pic (so the animals legs are all in a row, rather than the two furthest from the viewer being behind the two closest).

Thats ok, sometimes that takes a while. I'd be impressed he has put in so much work and assuming he wasn't copying a picture and this is all from his imagination (I suspect the pencil drawing above is copied from a picture!), its not at all bad.

WhineCoole · 29/05/2024 22:17

I work in a p2 class our children are 6 or starting to turn 7 and that drawing wouldn't look out of place in my class. But on a second look it also looks like a drawing my mum would do and she's 77 😂 so I don't know what my answer is...

Dishwashersaurous · 29/05/2024 22:17

And I'm really, really sorry of anyone thought I was bragging. I was just trying to show range of ability at that age. And lots of his.class are good at drawing.

JackGrealishsCalves · 29/05/2024 22:18

Honestly OP some kids are artistic, some aren't.
My ds , now 18, was never good at drawing, never will be, dh is the same and tbh so am I.
I would just tell him to practise if he wants to get better, do some tracing to help him improve but in the grand scale of things it really doesn't matter. Everyone has their strong points and for some of us art isn't one of them ❤️
If you want a laugh, my now 18 year old ds probably wouldn't draw as good as that

Dishwashersaurous · 29/05/2024 22:19

The main thing is to give him pencils rather than felt tip to get the fine motor skills and if he wants details

Ineedaholidayyyy · 29/05/2024 22:19

374jtwqj · 29/05/2024 22:00

The point of this thread is whether he is indeed behind in drawing. His teacher also mentioned that he struggles with writing.

Is there such a thing as being 'behind' in art? It's not like handwriting which you need to understand to read.

If he is upset about the drawing and wants to be able to draw better , then there is no harm in encouraging that, with practise he can get better. Some people just have a natural ability with art, like some do with sports.

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 29/05/2024 22:20

Did he enjoy drawing it @374jtwqj ?
Thats all that matters and I remember a book by a psychiatrist I read once, which said never to tell kids that their drawings are good. It’s a rubbish statement and they know it. Tell them exactly what you like about it. Give your compliments context and meaning and this is what will stay with them and give them confidence and help them grow. I’ve stuck by that since I read it and I immediately saw a difference in how they responded to my comments. Try it!

TheChosenTwo · 29/05/2024 22:21

OP my son is 12 and he’s got incredibly poor fine motor skill combined with a distinct lack of interest in ever picking up a pencil for fun drawing, writing is for school work as far as he’s concerned and that is equally hard to decipher. I would say that your sons drawing is probably similar to what my ds would produce.
I wish I could show you any of his drawings at that age for comparison but I genuinely have none because he wasn’t interested. His sisters were the complete opposite and they would spend quite literally hours a day drawing, painting, colouring, sketching etc, they still do now as adults!
I think it’s one of those things really, if he enjoys the creative process that’s great, there are loads of ‘how to draw a…’ books you could buy and loads of simple tutorials on YouTube if he’s interested in practising.

374jtwqj · 29/05/2024 22:21

@Dishwashersaurous that drawing is super cool and your DS is very talented.
I don't think DS drawing has advanced much since he was 4. His handwriting is also still pretty bad.

It looks absolutely fine to me. He isn't behind.

That’s really exceptional for a 6 year old - but not nearly so colourful!

Heatherbell1978 · 29/05/2024 22:25

These are the kinds of posts where someone says they'd expect that from a 6 month old.

374jtwqj · 29/05/2024 22:25

It was a drawing he did for his dad who's been ill recently. He wanted to draw it but was really ashamed of how bad he was. He just kept saying he is rubbish at drawing over and over.
