DS just gave me this picture. I know there is quite a lot of variation but how old do you think is the child who drew this?

How long is a piece of string?

374jtwqj · 29/05/2024 21:56

So DS was upset that he is really rubbish at drawing. He is in year 1 and is 6. I don't have anyone else to compare it with. I obviously told him it was lovely. He doesn't do much drawing at home.

Oh i think people on mumsnet are harsh if they get a whiff someone is proud of their child or thinks they are exceptional in some way!

I think it's a great picture, lots of detail. My 6yo wouldn't have the focus to do it, possibly my reception child (who has better focus) could, but not sure would have the imagination.

So I'd be quite impressed with it from any kid up to about 6 or 7! And even older - it can still be a nice picture even if not precocious

Dunnoburt · 29/05/2024 21:56

Going with 4...... sky only at the top..... its very good though, whatever age, you should frame it for a memory 😌..... or get it tattood!

GreenPhlem · 29/05/2024 21:57

Come on then, how old is the kid? Get in the bathroom

Dunnoburt · 29/05/2024 21:58

Art is subjective..... you can clearly see what the image subjects are.....

Actupfishy · 29/05/2024 21:58

It's a sweet picture and if he enjoys drawing you should encourage it! My daughter loves art, not the most accomplished of artists but I love getting her pictures x

So what’s the point of the thread? Surely he’s too young for you to show him this?

It’s very cute and definitely not rubbish. My ds wouldn’t have done that well when he was 10, never mind 6!

Loubelle70 · 29/05/2024 22:00

It doesn't matter. Its a drawing your little one has done. That's sweet. Comparisons are just not needed. Enjoy your child

NeonSky · 29/05/2024 22:00

4 - 6 I reckon.

It’s a lovely picture and the artist has made wonderful observations.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 29/05/2024 22:00

Just seen your update but my guess would have been 6 or 7 anyway. I cant imagine many 3 or 4 years drawing that , but maybe on Mumsnet everybody's kid is a budding artist. It looks absolutely fine for a 6 year old!

Also art tends to one of those things that people are either good or bad at .

374jtwqj · 29/05/2024 22:00

The point of this thread is whether he is indeed behind in drawing. His teacher also mentioned that he struggles with writing.

Some people - children and adults - simply cannot draw well. Others cannot sing. Others cannot play a musical instrument. All that is fine, and the expectation in schools that all pupils should be able to draw is unrealistic.

Actupfishy · 29/05/2024 22:02

I didn't know being 'behind' in drawing was a thing as such, I certainly wouldn't worry about it too much either way.

with handwriting it can kick in a little later

fairybaby · 29/05/2024 22:03

I would say the drawing ability is of a 4-5 year old, but the details added are for an older child. I think he is bang on target, given he is not crazy about drawing.

Elisabeth3468 · 29/05/2024 22:05

People saying 2 years old!! Ridiculous. I have a 2.5 year old and he does scribbles and lines etc and can't even draw a smiley face (which is very normal). They don't have the fine motor skills or dexterity at this age.
I would say between 5-7 this drawing. It's lovely.

GreenPhlem · 29/05/2024 22:05

Picasso did this when he was 8. He improved somewhat with age, your boy will too

Mine can't even hold the pen properly 😬

Pleatherandlace · 29/05/2024 22:07

Well no, it doesn’t seem that he is particularly good at drawing but I’m sure he has other gifts. Also he’s not going to be that great if it’s not something he spends time on at home.

Anonymouseposter · 29/05/2024 22:07

I would have said around 6. I don’t think the average 4 year old would produce that.

RochelleGoyle · 29/05/2024 22:08

4-8

Dishwashersaurous · 29/05/2024 22:09

So, I would say that he's pretty behind in drawing. The main thing is just to encourage him to do it.

Always have pens and paper on the table and then when you are cooking dinner, or anything he can draw

Can you be "behind" in drawing? I appreciate you need to get beyond scribbling, but once you can manage a vaguely recognisable animal, are there any more developmental benchmarks?

My hand writing is fine (not beautiful, but fine), and I can honestly say I can barely draw better than your son.

UniversalTruth · 29/05/2024 22:11

I think you have an opportunity here OP - encourage a growth mindset, people can get better at drawing if it's important to them - practice is what's needed. Draw With Rob on YouTube is great for this age, or a simple "how to draw" book might help him.
