To think Cornwall has gone down market?

Not my opinion - that of my friend. She said she was down in West Cornwall for the bank holiday weekend and the crowd seems go have changed a lot over the last five years.

The comments about Camborne and Redruth make me laugh. These places and similar towns and villages are the REAL Cornwall. Places where families have lived and grafted for many generations and where facilities to encourage tourism haven't been introduced because they are poor, ex industrial areas and hence not very picturesque. It's a far more authentic representation of Cornwall than all these seaside towns with rows of arcades, overpriced cafes and pasty shops.

I live in a place which is also often considered to be 'rough' and I think what people really mean is that it's poor and not pretty. The highest crime rates in Cornwall are actually typically in more touristy places.

Away from the coast Cornwall is vastly made up of working class people - we usually can't afford to live anywhere else. Perhaps your friend has visited the wrong area OP!
But there is so much beauty to be found all over the county and it's great that people of all demographics and from all areas want to come and enjoy it.

But they're not what the tourists imagine, are they?! Not many can be arsed climbing the treacherous rocks down to enjoy Kynance for example! Or enjoy the roads along the Helford passage - unless you're adept at reversing 3 miles to allow an oncoming vehicle to pass. That's the Cornwall I remember.
People seem to want it all - rural but with all the conveniences at hand. My mate lived on the Scillies, had to get around by boat - sounds idyllic except when you couldn't get deliveries because the Scillonian couldn't sail or the helicopter couldn't fly.
Some people have no idea. I highly recommend a film by the the Kernow King called Bait. That shows you the REAL Cornwall.

I’m a Southerner living up North for 28 years and I am assuming your friend is a Southerner and the sort that gives Southerners a bad name. She may be allergic to flat vowels or something. I’m allergic to snobbery.

Cuppateatea · 28/05/2024 10:58

Funny. As if a place that charges £1.5k a week (at least) to stay could be classed as downmarket 🙄

EarthSight · 28/05/2024 10:59

2boyzNosleep · 28/05/2024 10:52

What exactly does she mean by downmarket?

More tourists than usual so less of an exclusive feel? Travelling abroad is even more expensive now and since covid many people realise there are lovely places to visit in the UK.

The 'type' of people/tourists- more people drinking/antisocial behaviour? More diverse?-which I would take as being racist- if she has a problem with northerners than what does she think of people from different ethnicities/cultures that live/visit Cornwall?

More rundown- which is affecting the whole UK right now?

The UK is in a bloody state right now. Years of austerity, brevity, covid, cost of living. Everywhere has gone downmarket.

She probably means chavvy, lobster tanned, culturally ignorant, shouty people who drink too much, and want to buy generic tourist tat from China than anything local.

It's what the Spanish and French think of English tourists generally I'm guessing :/

CruCru · 28/05/2024 10:59

I don't know Cornwall very well - I went to a wedding there a long time ago but that's about it.

I wonder if, when people holiday, they like to see people who are really similar to them. She thinks the new people (who are not like her) have made Cornwall more downmarket. Other people mention the Hooray Henries - I expect those people aren't like them.

Abeona · 28/05/2024 11:00

Think I get what your friend means, OP. Someone I vaguely know spent £1.5million on a frontline coastal property somewhere between Looe and Fowey. Bought the house from someone you'd recognise from the TV. Richard and Judy and Gordon Ramsay all have homes in the same area. Just down the road there's an exclusive small resort hotel complex. Unfortunately, to get to this lovely house with its wide view of the sea and large garden, you have to drive past loads of caravan parks and a Haven-style place. I wouldn't want to live there. It's dead in the winter and overrun in the summer.

Trying to think where West Cornwall is to emmets. Bude is a bit kiss me quick. Croyde Bay surf crowd. St Ives arty farty types.

OP where did your mate visit?

I'm finding it difficult to think that anyone would describe Bude as being in the east of the county. And as others have said, Croyde is in Devon.

I spent yesterday afternoon on a huge and largely empty Cornish beach yesterday in glorious sunshine.

A number of us swam and we played a big game of rounders on the sand. It was much as it was when I first started coming here in the 1970s.

SiobhanSharpe · 28/05/2024 11:05

I'e been going to Cornwall from London since I was a child (for holidays but staying with or visiting family who lived there)
I love the county, tiny roads and all. It used to take us all night to drive to the Lizard area.
It's sad that it is not more prosperous. Even though it is definitely much, much busier these days.
I'll leave that there.

WomanMumLoverDaughterStepmumFriend · 28/05/2024 11:10

I’m not sure if we were unlucky but the weekend we went was full of people I didn’t want to be around, absolutely crowded. Restaurants were overrated and food was not great . Yes the place is beautiful but so is northern Scotland and not half as full .

Cotonsugar · 28/05/2024 11:17

Calamitousness · 28/05/2024 05:27

@FountainofTruth as a southerner (now) I can honestly say Northumberland is one of my favourite places in the world. It is simply beautiful. Amazing food as well. Went to some great restaurants and they have a fantastic dairy. Best ice cream ever. And cheeses. Love the place.

Please keep this a secret or everyone will want to visit including all the “downmarket” people 😊

NeedWineNow · 28/05/2024 11:20

I haven't been in Cornwall in years, since we had to go down and clear out my SIL's flat after she passed away. She lived in Redruth which was the least touristy place that I could imagine.

We went down to visit her when she first moved and one day we drove to St Mawes. That was full of 4X4s, braying voices shouting to each other 'lovely to see you, did you winter well?' and 'have you met my mother, Lady Snooty Pants?'. That combined with the prices in the shops and in the bars and restaurants made me wonder at the time how the locals felt and how they afforded to live there. Same with St Ives when we visited.

RM2013 · 28/05/2024 11:21

We are from the midlands and generally visit Carbis Bay every year. We hadn’t booked this year as DH had an op with a long recovery. We’ve noticed it’s a lot busier everywhere over the past few years. We tend to go early April when it’s not as busy.

I think some places have declined. I’ve noticed this where we live. Lots of shops closed but think this is down to cost of living plus the way we shop (eg online)

Well the whole country is falling apart after 14 years of Tory austerity followed by lies and the whipping up of social division that is Brexit, then Covid.

Yawn Yawn! Things pre 2010 were wonderful, weren't they, we were obviously the only place on earth to experience Covid and Labour dealt with it far better. It will be interesting to see what happens to 'the pound in your pockets' if/when they get in.

Locutus2000 · 28/05/2024 11:45

ComeAlongPeggy · 28/05/2024 08:12

@Beezknees of course not. But generally speaking people with neck/face tattoos and/or “kyran, rheece, Kayleigh” with birth dates on their chest might just possibly be more likely to want Butlins type holidays, smoke and be quite loud.

I am aware that tattoos do not mark people out as working class/loud/drinkers.

I’m also aware that the neck tattoo brigade are just as likely to be kind and lovely as the next person.

But I love St Ives for the peace, the art, the light, the food, the surf etc. If I wanted arcades, chips and lager I’d go to Skegness.

I'm afraid your first paragraph kinda negates the rest.

JudgeJ · 28/05/2024 11:46

Bikeandbasket · 28/05/2024 08:16

And some of us live there. Wild! 🤪

By NORTHERNERS I assume they mean anyone North of Exeter!

atotalshambles · 28/05/2024 11:48

I love Cornwall. We used to go every year. Since Covid it has become so expensive. With variable weather in the UK, it has become cheaper to go overseas (with guaranteed sunshine).

You do know that the caravan parks have just as much right to be there as well as the ‘celebrities’ you have mentioned? In fact they will bring much more revenue to Cornwall than the people buying the big houses who stay in them a few times a year..

Your attitude is really unpleasant if I’m honest.

ForeveraBluebird · 28/05/2024 10:16

Slippery slope here mind, first the Northerners arrive and before you know it the Welsh will be there as well. Tell your friend to take care .

Build a wall, as an ex President once said.

Newquay has definitely gone upmarket compared with twenty years ago.

To be fair though, it could hardly have fallen any further, the only was was up.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 28/05/2024 11:57

GentlemanJohnny · 27/05/2024 21:45

Never knew it was upmarket.

That's exactly what I was about to say 😂
Someone I knew at school was moved down there (with 24 hours notice) by an anti drugs organisation to help her overcome a drug addiction and ever since I've associated Cornwall with the seedier side of life.

the80sweregreat · 28/05/2024 11:59

I've never been back since 08 when we had a week of non stop rain in August , ds2 had food poisoning from eating something bought in Newquay and we were nearly bankrupt from paying out for parking everywhere. Came home early doors.
Nice accommodation though and very picturesque, but just one of those holidays you want to forget.

Itsnamechange · 28/05/2024 12:00

People who think of a certain demographic as “downmarket” are showing their own lack of class
