Why can't they be open 8-6 for everyone? It would help reduce gender inequality in the work place

All together now - SCHOOLS ARE FOR EDUCATION NOT FOR CHILDCARE

TillyTrifle · 24/05/2024 20:32

I certainly don’t want my children at school for ten hours a day so…..maybe we continue to see schools as educational settings designed to meet children’s needs and parents arrange wrap around care as needed?!

heretodestroyyou · 24/05/2024 20:33

Things are really tough for working parents and we need to look at why but it's not the job of schools to provide childcare.

lemonmeringueno3 · 24/05/2024 20:33

I suppose that's what they're trying to achieve with wraparound care. But of course you do have to pay for that if you use it. If they extended the school day by four hours it would cost a lot of money that all taxpayers would pay for, whether they needed it or wanted it.

LeedsZebra90 · 24/05/2024 20:33

Whilst it is a right pain to juggle it all, I wouldn't want my kids to be at school from 8-6. I thinks its too long. Plus at a basic level i see its purpose to be education not childcare.

Covetthee · 24/05/2024 20:33

Or maybe work places need to change their hours?

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowItHaveAGin · 24/05/2024 20:34

That will definitely encourage more teachers into the profession.

TeaKitten · 24/05/2024 20:34

Use wrap around care and quit moaning. No kid needs to be in education 8-6

cakecoffeecakecoffee · 24/05/2024 20:34

It would of course make my life infinitely easier!! But no, that’s not what school
is there for.

Leafalotta · 24/05/2024 20:35

As a lone parent I'm struggling so much with the holidays and childcare, it's taking up so much of my headspace and causing huge stress. I don't blame the school but why does holiday club start and finish an hour earlier than breakfast and after school club? Why do no holiday clubs run after the third week of August? I've used up all my goodwill at work.

Seashor · 24/05/2024 20:36

Why can’t parents sort their shit out before they have children?

WaitingfortheTardis · 24/05/2024 20:36

Because the children and their ability to learn are far more important than life being easy.

elliejjtiny · 24/05/2024 20:36

No, not every parent wants this and not every child would be able to cope with those hours. Also teachers are already struggling, I'm not in favour of anything that makes life even harder for teachers.

ilovesooty · 24/05/2024 20:36

Even if it were a good idea to keep pupils in school that long where do you think schools are going to find the money or the staffing?

Pollipops1 · 24/05/2024 20:36

Most of the schools I know offer wrap around care 7:30/8 to 6.

glasshalffull0 · 24/05/2024 20:36

That'll help with the teacher recruitment & retention crisis.

Who's going to pay for teachers to teach for the extra hours?

It's not the teachers job to raise your children, despite what many parents think, its the teachers job to educate

TeaKitten · 24/05/2024 20:37

Seashor · 24/05/2024 20:36

Why can’t parents sort their shit out before they have children?

This comment is as silly as OPs post. You can’t predict available childcare options 5 years into the future.

Pollipops1 · 24/05/2024 20:37

But they are usually external providers so not teachers.

OriginalUsername2 · 24/05/2024 20:37

Because childcare is first come first served. Not pre-booked at conception.

MultiplaLight · 24/05/2024 20:38

School isn't childcare!!

Nor is it their sole responsibility to educate your child.

Why have a kid if you're never there for it?

Pliyo · 24/05/2024 20:39

God that would be fucking horrendous. Kids are at school too much as it is.

Itsacruelsummer · 24/05/2024 20:39

Or working life could catch up with the needs of families- flexi time, compressed hours etc.

Or the economy could actually work for families to live on one full time or two part time incomes so parents could spend more time with their kids.

Why should children be shoved in childcare or school for 10 hours a day when it's not beneficial for them?

The vast majority of parents want to spend more time with their children and not less and the real problem is that they aren't supported by workplaces or the economy to do that. Wraparound care has its place but no child should be in school 60 hours a week.

Pollipops1 · 24/05/2024 20:39

School isn't childcare!!

Nor is it their sole responsibility to educate your child.

wraparound clubs aren’t school though & using them doesn’t mean you absolve all responsibility.

Pollipops1 · 24/05/2024 20:40

🙄

Onabench · 24/05/2024 20:40

School is not and never has been childcare....

This is absolutely not in schools.

Maybe look for employment with more flexibility and out of hours providers
