Breastpumping at concert

Jourl · 24/05/2024 20:00

AIBU for planning on pumping at a concert? I'm planning on taking my hand pump with me and a couple empty bottles to store then discard.

Does anyone know if I'll be okay taking in this? I've enquired with the venue but had no response.

For clarity it is Taylor Swift at Wembley

Hi - what’s the show/venue? It’s always worth a chat with customer services for either the ticketing agent or the promoter who will be able to advise.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/05/2024 10:09

Sorry but that’s a no from me. Breastfeeding, fine, pumping: go somewhere private.

Zanatdy · 25/05/2024 10:11

Surely you mean in the ladies toilets? That’s absolutely fine but someone sitting in a seat pumping is a big no to me. Do it discreetly in the ladies bathrooms, you’re only discarding anyway so won’t matter

Isitchill · 25/05/2024 10:17

You will need permission from Wembley to take it in. Email again. They should then issue you with a certificate a few days before the gig that you can show security. Otherwise a heavy handed security guard might take the bottles off you. You should also then have permission to take a slightly bigger bag into the venue. (Had to do this with epi-pens and snacks).

I see no issue here in theory but why would you take such a small baby to a concert - i find the strange tbh

She's not taking the baby.

Jemimapuddleduk · 25/05/2024 10:31

I had to do this 3 or 4 months post Partum when we went to a courteeners gig in manchester. I did it in the toilets of a bar before hand to relieve the pressure/discomfort and prevent me ending up with mastitis. I had a brilliant night but did have to explain what the pump was on the handbag checks 😂

It's not only me then. MN complete fine. Real world - who does that??

Maddy70 · 25/05/2024 10:46

People will be bouncing around you. :) They will confiscate it if its glass.

Maddy70 · 25/05/2024 10:49

The only way you'll know for sure is to ask the venue

Email them so you have proof to show security

If you feel comfortable with people looking then go for it. Once I'd twigged what you were doing I'd look away, but I'd probably look for a while trying to make sense of it!

Why is it that what a woman is doing, which would be obvious to anyone with even two brain cells, be something you need to make sense of? And to make sense of this, you need to stare at her, and obviously her breasts, like some daft neanderthal?

Unbelievable.

ForeveraBluebird · 25/05/2024 10:54

No issues with the pumping if you were sat in a seat. My worry would be someone bumping into you or just finding a safe space to stand while you do this.

This was sort of a reason for me not wanting someone breast pumping next to me. If I’m dancing and bumping around you and it disrupts you I’d feel bad. I also don’t want to have to tone down my behaviour and not enjoy the concert as much. That does sound selfish, yes.

I don’t really care if I see anything because as people have pointed out you’d be covered up.

lemonmeringueno3 · 25/05/2024 11:02

I understand why you want to do it and I think they'll allow it because it'd be a pr disaster if they didn't. But it just doesn't seem like the place for it does it. A bit weird. I'd feel the same if I was in a club or at the cinema or in a queue at a theme park and noticed someone doing it. Just because it's technically allowed doesn't mean you should. It's not something I've ever seen so presumably there are better ways to manage it.

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowItHaveAGin · 25/05/2024 12:35

Oh ffs there is much more flesh on display all the time, everywhere, and there will definitely be people less covered up than op at the concert. In fact TS will probably be one of them.

It's only when a woman is using her breasts for anything related to feeding a baby that there seems to be people uncomfortable about it.

Exactly this. All for female empowerment on here until it comes to the most natural use of our breasts, then it’s pearl clutching and expecting OP to stay home with baby.

Aren't most people on this thread likely to be millennials, given the website and the thread topic?

I think the demographic on here is older than that, more 40 plus up to 70 ish, obviously some outside this range. Lots of grandmas on here!

You are limited how long you can go without breastfeeding so if you are at a concert that lasts hours you need to do something. It’s a necessity and not a choice

SpringHexagon · 25/05/2024 13:50

I went to a show whilst breastfeeding that I couldn't take my baby to, I did take an elvie type pump with me in my bag and pumped in a toilet cubicle during the break.

I take it you know nothing about breastfeeding? Probs best to stick to giving advice about things you know about.

maw1681 · 25/05/2024 15:04

Quite surprised and disappointed at some of the comments on here tbh! Why should OP spend the concert uncomfortable with full boobs and risk mastitis etc?
If you need to pump go for it, I would take the pump and one bottle though and pour the milk away because you won't be able to keep it cool anyway.
Would there be a first aid area/room you could use maybe?

Bignanna · 25/05/2024 15:08

Pump in the toilets, pour down the loo, job done. Back to your seat.

Not very hygienic!

I wouldn't feed a baby in the toilet but I would pump and dump if I had to - not ideal, but given that no baby is actual involved I could probably make it work. I'd much prefer it if the organisers could just make a small, clean room available though, and advertise it for women who need it!

Good thinking, but how many organisers would do this?
